Shanghai Six, War, and White Shine : A Discussion

Alright, first off, this isn't another lame ass "what should i get" thread.

I've seen all of them, and am seriously stumped as to which one is better. Maybe they're all as good as each other, but i just want to see what YOU think. Here's my two cents:

Shanghai Six: Amazing soundtrack, sick editing(especially with the names), and really good skiing. My only semi-gripe is the lack of diversity with the hits.

WAR: Really good balance of park and B.C. lines. Pretty good soundtrack, incredible editing, and the return of pep and the best segment for seth in a while.

White Shine: I really liked the feel of this movie. No real defined rider parts, it's more about defining the locations, which is fresh and sick. I think the soundtrack is probably my least favorite, not to say it sucked, but it had some tough competition.

Your Thoughts?
 
so far i've seen those same movies plus Pop yur Bottles, pretty much the same ideas as urself, except i didn't like how they did they names by location,

pop yur bottles was cool, kye's part in the beginning

was really sweet, and tanners part was sick until it

ended fairly quick,

sammy carlson's part in WAR was like the best part ever,

and i can't remember what movie it was, but i think it

was shanghai, where chrichton does all urban in toronto

i liked that a lot
 
O well iI didnt feel WAR flow at all, just didnt feel right, the bc sections were just ot mixed at all with jumpsor rails so they gotkinda boring for me.

dont getme wrong, I love bc skiing, just not for a straight 2 consecutive minutes, unless it's crazy shits like hugo's part in happyhappy
 
^repeat, i'm not asking which one to buy.

i've got war, shanghai six and pop yer bottelz. i just want to see how the newschooler community felt about this. In my opinion, this is the height of the epicness of ski movies to date, and the skys the limit.
 
i guess this should have been a little more open, rather than limiting it to three movies, so OPEN DISCUSSION TIME!!
 
^yea that's what i was thinking because i loved high five, but i also really like to see bc booters, but im not that into big mountain lines, and i won't a movie with plenty of bc booters and park and urban but not really much big line skiing and i already got or whiteshine, just not at my house
 
i think the soundtracks to war and a s6 were mediocre and whiteshine had a super sick soundtrack, id say whiteshine was the best it makes me want to be canadian
 
hands down...all the movies ive seen this yr "shanghai six,teddy bear crisis,and war" havent impressed me as much as FORWARD...that will be the all time best movie ever
 
ive only seen war so far, and i agree what you said completely, altho i really really liked the soundtrack, everything seemed to fit the skier. and i think thats the best segment sammy c had this yr between that and booter crunk.
 
ive seen war and tbc and booter crunk..all good but booter crunk is not a movie you sit down and watch, tbc is, as is war

tbc, even tho the music was odd, was amazing

i cant wait to watch born from ice, ill give a good report on that when i get in a few days
 
i have war and s6. i didnt really like the soundtrack of war at first, but it really grew on me. they had a good mix of park/bc, and i good variey of hits

music in s6 was wicked, sick editing, but like somone said earlier, not alot of variety with their hits
 
I've seen just about every movie this year, and out of everyone...I would say Shanghai Six flowed the best, best editing, very good skiing, and best soundtrack. Teddy Bear Crisis is a close second because the jumps in it are massive and most of the skiing is very sick.
 
i really liked war, sammy's part is real good. never been much a fan of level 1 videos, shanghai six was no exception. it wasnt bad though. whiteshine gets a lot of hate with the whole artsy thing, but im a fan for sure. id say as far as videos, its between tbc and war for me this year. tbc had jon, so that kinda did it.
 
i didnt like whiteshine atall, but thats just me. I didnt feel the music and the riders werent my favourite...

however, shanghai six is a different story - great music and skiing.
 
i went to the premier of Shanghigh six and thought it was amazing. but i have never seen white shine so i cant compare that one
 
For me it's simply a tie between White Shine and S6; I simply alternate between them to get the best out of both worlds, they complete each other because they're so different in style. Maybe I prefer White Shine a LITTLE, but that may be a Quebecer's biased view. The artistic style really breaks new ground...
 
War is def. the best. I've had it since early august and I'm still not tired of it. The helmet cams on BC lines with JP are amazing. seth's segment isn't compareable to focused's or ski movie 3's, but it is good. Pep, zachd, sammy carlson/hatviet, JP, john symms, benchetler, andy mahre, seth, pretty much everyone has really good segments. the skiing also went with the music very well.

whiteshine needs a new soundtrack. The skiing is sick, so is the editing, but it is missing iannick, 3phils, mikael, pep, rinfret. they are in it, but not enough. They are the soul(3phils, rinfret, iannick) of Plehouse and they need to be in the movie more.

Shanghai 6 is really good too, but I've only seen it twice.
 
i really liked the feel to shanghai six. just seemed so lay back, friendly, everybody kickin it and having a good time. not out to impress, just skiing. that's the way it should be.. building bc booters with friends, hittin it all day.. finding sick urban rails. weeeehoooooooo good shit good shit. as for war, i need to see it, and whiteshine was pretty sick but i didn't just didn't feel it. it didn't 'wow' me. the level of skiing in shanghai six was awesome.
 
people who hate on whiteshine (not necassarily in this thread) need to understand that without plehouse and its amazingly artistic ways are the reason that ski movies are getting better. If they were not pushing the envelope, it would not give them a reason to imprive quality of thier films.

ps. i loved all the soundtracks from this year but mostly white shine, and jps seg in war (one of the sickest bands ever)
 
they are all reely good movies and it rreely depends what you are after i would deffinately classify myself as more of a big mountain skier than a park skier but i loved shanghi six, even though there was no BM almost whatsoever, it was just such amazing editing and there was no slo mo and ah its just one of those films that gets you reely stoked and makes you wanna not only go out and ski but watch it again and again, shanghi six, thats my vote.
 
i just saw war, tbc and hit list

in war i loved the skiing it was just sick hatveits part was crazy and candide's insane as usual also pep's part was crazy just love to see him back on snow again i missed jon and thought it was really odd to put jacob only in the bonus?!? but the sound was good and some of the shots were just crazy set ups (tree jib etc)

tbc is my favourite because of the artistic aspect and the insane skiing some of the bc kickers were crazy beautiful step ups and also step downs mike wilson's segment was epic (double cork?!?)and i really liked tanners and dumonts part the swedish guys weren't that bad either jon has stommped just some very special and good looking stuff i wished there would be more of niklasit was just llike 2 or 3 shots tj's first line on jon invitational was insane (why didn't he win?!?). the sound is a bit special but fits to the movie

in hit list i really liked rorys part and some of benchetlers stuff
 
Shanghai Six is the best ski movie out there to date. Someone said it had almost no BC booters..what the hell? Almost every jump is from BC, excluding the Jumpopotamus jump and the Keystone project. Such a perfect movie, I even see dreams about it. Travis Redd and Liam Downey just fucking brought it to the table.

War wasn't bad, but it was worse than X. The music was pretty damn wrong( with the exception of Mars Volta) and none of the segments had anything memorable, maybe Håtveit's huge 3 and Pep's Pyramid, but I can't really remember anything about these new PBP movies, Happy Dayz had so much memorable stuff, they've only gone downhill from there (exception of 1242). The editing was not at the level what it was in X, X had Schwags editing some parts and they fucking rocked.

Whiteshine was pretty short, the music was...I don't know, didn't get me pumped at all. It also missed anything special, Plehouse movies never have the greatest skiing, they've gone for the feel of the whole sport kind of thing, so the skiing isn't that sick (with exception of JF Houle and Gagnier). It also ended with a regular switch 5 I think, from a regular table, by Josh Bibby. It was the worst ending for a ski movie I can imagine. An abrubt ending and then just credits, nothing more.. The end of a movie has to be memorable.

Teddybear Crisis starts out with a gloriously well done intro, but I'm gonna skip it a lot since it's 3 minutes long and has no skiing. Then comes another "interlude" with time lapses of cars. You're gonna see a lot of cars in this movie. A lot of the timelapses in TBC are useless and pointless, nothing fancy, but TBC also has the best timelapse shots of almost any movie(with the exception of Requiem For a Dream), but again, they lack skiing. Brandon Becker starts the movie, maybe it's his first year doing big BC booters, but he just flails around a lot. The song in his segment is the best in the whole movie and it gets you really pumped. The gripe about TBC is the music and the weird,short segments. I remember in Unity, a norwegian skier with a beard only had a simple straight air with a tail grab. Now John Symms only has one jump. Jon Olsson has his best segment in a while, and Tanner absolutely destroys shit, first in Finland, then in his own segment, accompanied by A Flock Of Seagulls, which surpisingly suits his segment so well among rap. Teddybear is definately the second best movie of the year. The music can get really tedious though, and the slow motion is really a pain.

Pop Yer Bottlez is a really good movie as a whole, the theme works unlike in Yearbook. But the movie's short lifespan, around 28 minutes, considering that it has about 7 minutes of the "theme" stuff is a real letdown. Pep has an awesome part, his swich lipslide disaster is the craziest rail trick.

I'm hungover so I can't really write any more.
 
I don't see how a lot of stuff wasn't memorable. JP's quad kink and back country lines, as well as the avalanches, sammy carlson's double grabs, hatviet going like 40 feet off the hip, all the switch ups on urban rails, john symms 7 shiftie, olenicks sw back. it was edited far better than X.
 
PBP should stop filming with 25 kids and focus on like 6-7 riders.

Pop yer bottles = Terrible.

Shanghai = SICK

White Shine = Sick

War = Nothing to do with war, Nothing special at all.
 
^I really don't see your point about war not being about war. Is Shanghai 6 about a large city in China? No. Does Whiteshine have anythign to do with bright white lights? No. Do most ski movies have much correspondance to their names? No. I can only think of a few. the Gmae relates to its name because it was a game to see who could create the best video segment. Balance is because there was an unbalance between riders, filmers, and exposure from the east and west coast. Other movies that might actually deal with their names are 2nd generation, and I really can't think of many more.
 
That's actuall a good point. With something like war I thought they could have had a pretty cool theme going throughout the movie is all.
 
Here are my thoughts on War and White Shine after several views.

I thought war was MUCH MUCH better than either Ready, Fire, Aim, X, or Happy Days. I thought that forthe most part, the music was the best they've ever used, especially Mars Volta, and Trail of Dead, QOTSA, and Violet. They still used a few cheesy hip hop songs, but for the most part I liked the soundtrack.

The editing was better this year, but still not great.

White Shine's editing was amazing and the songs very good, but the lack of variety, especially in the backcountry sucked. They also used too much park footy. The only park footage should have been Houle's 540 on that huge mother at the beginning, the session at Le Massif, and Gangier's park session.

The editing is amazing though and I'll probably watch this movie more than any other because of it.
 
i didnt like whiteshine much either, the editing somewhat annoyed me and the music was weird, the way they put the segments together wasnt great either

firstly, i hate this. i hate having to try and pick out riders with nothing to go on but their changing outfits.

second of all, this is not fresh and sick, it is another example of skiing being 1 or 2 steps behind snowboard movies. Afterlame did it, then all the sudden a bunch of skiing movies are all about it.

don't have time for a full post, but will agree with whoever said that whiteshine had the worst movie ending ever. the first time I saw the movie it came out of nowhere.
 
I saw Whiteshine only once at the premier in Montreal, I didnt like it much, but since ski movies get better and better as you watch them, it might not be the failure that i think it was

As for my favourite movie, i like S6... Coker and Vanular's parts are just inspiring. The soundtrack is ok and the editing great

TBC is also a great movie, with all big names like Jon, Tanner, Henrik, Wilson, Dumont etc... I hate the soundtrack though, that euro techno is gettin on my nerve and Tanner's segemtn needs a song that actually fits with the editing. But the skiing is SICK

War also rocked, espacially with the Olenicks, Sammy Carlson and omg... CANDIDE! is part is fuckin awesome!!

For great Big mountain skiing, TGR and Hitlist are also great!
 
i have yet to see S6, but ive seen War and Whiteshine and can say that Whiteshine owns War hands down..

Whiteshine is where ski movies ought to be going: not featuring athletes, but skiing in different places. The feel of the movie really reminded me of Step into the Liquid, though not with as many lifestyle sections, which could have been sick.

The skiing was awesome, and the editing was sick, whiteshine owns.
 
I agree with your point though... whiteshine brings something different about skiing, not everybody can like that, but still, its good that these guys go in a different direction
 
yeah, definitely, featuring athletes is lame. Movies should definitely start focusing more on the locations. I'd like to see more lifestyle shots of the jumps- maybe the jumps hanging out, cracking jokes, expressing themselves through painting.

i mean, all this time movies have had freakin 3 minute segments of some guy, but no one stops to ask, what did the mammoth 65 footer accomplish this season?

russia seemed to have a breakout year, hopefully it shoots with more companies next season. the possibilities are endless.
 
unlike other years i dont think you can say one was really that much better than the others, they are all better in different respects and should all be held in high regards
 
i have whiteshine and i liked it, the only thing that kind of got annoying was the slow mo shots of tricks that weren't that cool, like a cork 3 blunt, or something, the slow mo got kind of repetitive, but the bonus was sick
 
The editing in Shanghai Six was amazing, but the style,(park and jib)is not really my cup of tea. But it still got me really stoked to ski.War. War. very good movie, amazing editing, great footage, My vote is War. But i have only seen Shanghai Six once so...and Whiteshine I won't even bother with.
