personally i thing Tolkien is greater, he uses artistic language but his stories still sound real

whereas shakespeares stuff was way too flowery and long, kinda fake too because people don't talk for 5 minutes straight, flowery words should be saved for poems i think,

Not comparable, two totally different things. You can't say one was better than the other, except that Shakespeare obviously had more influence. I'd rather be reading Tolkein, but that doesn't necessarily make it better literature.

its tough to compare a writer from the renaissance/early baroque with one from the twentieth century... cmon now... thats like comparing bach to ravel. or eh, the beatles to radiohead... sorta... you really cant. they speak entirely different languages, and speak to entirely different purposes and audiences. no comparison possible!

I do like Tokien a lot more though, I mean he created a whole world for his stories. But yeah I don't think the two can really be well compared.

obvously tolkien is a better writer, his books were actually meant to be read. unlike shakespeare, he would be pissed that people are reading his PLAYS like novels. tolkein is also better because normal people actually enjoy his literature, where as normal people cant stand shakespeare.

Shakespeare was a playwrite, Tolkien was a story teller. i agree both were geniuses for their times. the stuff that Shakespeare wrote wasnt shit, it jsut takes a hell of alot more to understand and interpert his works. you have to remember that he was writing his plays LONG before Tolkien was even born.

although, id much rather read a book written by Tolkien

Anyone who's hacked their way through the Silmarillion even once can tell you that it's no cakewalk, not light reading. If that was written in Shakespearean english it'd be even tougher to sort through than the Bard's plays. Maybe it already is.

Well obviously if you're not big on language, there's not much point in reading it. You can still see them live though, and enjoy them. I always understood them better live when I wasnt so good at reading them. And hey, I dont get opera half the time (partially because of dumb plots) but I really like those.

if i can remember right tolkein didnt write the whole silmarrilion i think he died before he finished so his son did the rest.

^Nothing wrong with reading them. But I did mention this. Still it's hard to find the production you want to see sometimes, so you can just read the script. I always have to end up doing that with Tom Stoppard plays, R+G are Dead might just be my favourite play ever. Mamet is also good as 20th century types go...

I can't beleive this is actually being discussed. Of course most of us enjoy reading tolkein better. we were basically his target audiance. shakespeare wrote plays. you go and watch them. they are much better live, than when they are read in class or wherever you were forced to read them. My brain hrts, I'm going to bed.

Shakespeare was an amazing writer, Hamlet is my favorite piece of literature I have ever read in my life. So much of his work is just so deep and incredibly smart its amazing. That play has had more impact on my life than anything else. Maybe you guys should read a little more Shakespeare and put away your first two movies of LOTR for a bit.

^^that is a ridiculous statement. madtrix, you are clearly unable to grasp the multiple plots in shakespeare that are not immediately apparent to the reader. if you were a better reader you might appreciate shakespeare a little more.

 
shakespeare's work was literally art. tolkien wrote some great stories, but his word usage and literary elements dont compare to shakespeare. apples and oranges bro.

There is actually a reason you are REQUIRED to read Shakespeare in high school. Shakespeare is on a completly different level.

^Er, theres a hell of a lot of good literature that isn't even talked about in high school. Just cause they don't teach it doesn't mean it's inferior.

 
Of course there is other great literature you don't read, but pretty much everyone reads Shakespeare, simply because it some of the finest literature ever written. Tolkien may be a great author, he wrote entertaining novels and his works should not go unnoticed, but does not reach the level of Shakespeare.

^^ Not true at all, he's both. As well as writing what may well be the greatest STORIES ever (note i didn't say literature), He's also one of the most well respected literary critics in history. Some of his works on Beowulf and norse mythology (which greatly infulenced his own work) are widely regarded as the best ever written.

But I still hate the perverse amount of severity invested in everything that is LOTR.
