Hearing set for plan to ski-jump on street

City officials will decide today whether to give approve a controversial plan to put 200 tons of snow and a ski jump on Fillmore Street in Pacific Heights.

The Interdepartmental Staff Committee on Traffic and Transportation, which issues permits for street closures, is scheduled to vote on the ski-jump plan at 10:30 a.m. in Room 330A of City Hall, 25 Van Ness Ave. Expecting a large turnout, the committee is moving from its regular room to a larger room to hear public comment.

Organizers of Icer Air 2005 have applied for a permit to close Fillmore Street between Broadway and Green Street and Vallejo Street between Steiner and Webster streets from noon Sept. 28 to 8 p.m. Sept. 29. People who live on those blocks would not be able to drive to or from their homes during that time.

The event, which would be filmed for MTV, would feature Olympic skier Jonny Moseley and 20 other professional skiers and snowboarders flying off the ski jump, performing mid-air acrobatics and landing near Green Street.

Icer Air 2005 originally was scheduled for Aug. 27, but the city canceled it three days in advance because of concerns about the safety of the ski jump scaffolding, snow removal, security, crowd control, trash, insurance and other complaints from neighbors.

Backers of a much-ballyhooed ski jump in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights won city approval today to stage the event next week.

More than 70 people — homeowners, lawyers, skiers and Hindu monks and nuns — packed a small conference room to support the youthful spirit of the event, or lambaste it as a violation of city safety codes.

After almost two hours of public comments, the Interdepartmental Staff Committee on Traffic and Transportation decided that ski and snowboard wax company Icer had satisfied all safety requirements and voted 8-0 to grant the permit, which will close Fillmore Street between Broadway and Green and Vallejo Street between Webster and Steiner streets Sept. 28-29.

“We’re gratified that we’re going forward,� said Olympic skier Jonny Moseley, a consultant for the event, Icer Air 2005. “I think we came to a reasonable agreement with the neighbors about their concerns. A lot of the concerns were legitimate, but some were way out there.�

Neighbors’ main worries are that Icer’s $2 million insurance policy is inadequate for an event that will feature Moseley and 20 other professional skiers and snowboarders skiing down Fillmore Hill and flying about 20 feet off a ski jump. The event — a promotion aimed at boosting Icer’s business profile — is expected to draw thousands of spectators to one of the city’s most upscale and quiet neighborhoods.

“Of course we’re disappointed because we feel like we had good points,� said Warner Hirsch, a Hindu monk at the Vedanta Society, a monastery at Fillmore and Vallejo streets. “But a decision was made.�

The committee, which issues permits for street closures, is comprised of representatives from police, fire, public works, parking and traffic and the taxi commission.

In March, the committee approved an earlier version of the event but the mayor’s office intervened and sought a delay over neighborhood objections.

 
Well good to hear thats its still going on..

Whether its intentional or not, it sure seems like moseley is trying to still be in the spoitlight as the one "progressing skiing", just like he was back in the olys.

i hope they mean 20 feet high. that would be the lamest thing ever. expecting a monster turnout and then like moseley's attempting to huck 7's off a 20 foot step down. although it would be sick nonetheless. im surprised it was approved that's gotta be so sketch. and remember what happened with letterman wit hannah teter i think when she accidentally crashed in NYC. i hope it goes over well and promotes freeskiing. have fun guys ill check it out in 3 years when they finally get it out to us.

The intersection is gonna be a table, and from what I've heard, skiers are going to be 20 ft up, and it should be about 70 ft across the intersection to the sweet spot of the landing
