Sexy Slim PS3 may be coming sooner than expected

Sony my be in the plans of releasing a thinner version of their PS3. it took them alot longer for them to make the slimmer PSone and PStwo models. but they have been able to shrink their bluray laser into laptops. Sony has been working very hard to bring the costs down on their playstation and maybe making it smaller is the key.

They lose money on every console they sell, making it smaller won't make a difference, if anything they might lose even more because the same components could cost more because they're smaller

That looks terrible. Piano finish black> matte gray. It would be nice to have them smaller and lighter for travel and stuff but they should keep the original black.

actually for the past 2 or 3 months cost of making the ps3 has been a couple dollars less than the price of the console so with packaging, cables, controllers and all that their pretty much breaking even with the ps3.

and as far as costing more because it's smaller thats not necessarily true. unless you work for sony you dont know how they make the playstation 3. neither do I for that matter but I can think of a couple of ways that making a smaller playstaition can save them money.

my first thought is bluray. im sure thats pretty expensive to make if they use the smaller bluray laser they have in their laptops then they could close down the factory that makes the bigger units. by consolidating the production of their laptop, playstation, and bluray players they will save alot of money.

then for procesors. moving to a smaller process costs alot of money to start of but its a one time fee to change the machinery. afterwards it all gets cheaper. smaller processor means it runs cooler, and consumes less energy.

graphics chip: when the playstation 3 was launched the closest pc gpu that could compete was a dual videocard board that cost about $800- 1000 sony had a very similar chip in their console. well now a graphics card that compares to what is in the ps3 costs about $140 for a PC user(by the way nvidia was able to make their gpus more powerful, and cheaper by going to a smaller manufacturing process).

so nvidia is probably passing on the saving by making new smaller chips for the ps3

and finally all of this smaller cpu, smaller gpu means that less heat will be generated, which means you do not need as big of a heatsink (which saves money on copper, and aluminium, you dont need as big of a fan and with a smaller fan and smaller heatsink you can make a smaller enclosure which saves money on plastics, and metals. this smaller unit also costs less than the original bigger one.

so if Sony releases this new Unit for the same price as the current one. the size of it will be a new reason to get a PS3 for us and they might make some money off of it. also they might even be able to lower the price with all the money they might be saving.

and once again. everything I just wrote is just what I think could make this cheaper. I have no proof of this. other than Sony being a pretty smart company and releasing a product that costs them more to make than the older model when they really need to be making the old product cheaper would be stupid.

They just started making a profit on every system sold. They aren't going to throw that away in the millions of dollars of engineering its going to take to make the ps3 way smaller. Not to mention all the money they've lost from selling the first batch of ps3s at a HUGE loss.

yeah PS3 slimmer! not, who cares, ps1, ps2, and ps3 have all had the same style of games, same style of game play w/ barely anything innovative to bring to the table. Sony should retire systems and start making games for Xbox and Wii

well like I said making it smaller is going to cost them less money. in fact here is a piece of news from this morning confirming what I thought about the processor being made smaller.

BM has successfully miniaturized the Cell processor that you know

from Sony's PlayStation 3. Formerly built upon the 65nm scale, the new

version will be based on the 45nm high-k process. What's this mean?

Money, power and heat savings for Sony. And maybe a smaller or cheaper

PS3 for you.

Along with the higher processor yields,

what's most attractive is the power/heat savings. These 45nm Cells use

40 percent less power than the current, 65nm Cell. Sure that's a power

savings for customers, but it's also a major heat savings for

designers. The PS3 may not have the red ring of death problem like

we've seen in the Xbox 360, but a cooler, smaller Cell could fit in a

cooler, smaller PS3 (requiring less fans, etc.).

And while Sony has already managed to nearly break even on their

console production cost vs. retail prices, the impending redesign could

help Sony cut a legit profit from hardware (or allow Sony to cut prices

again, instead). We'll keep an eye out for the new chips, but unless

they come bundled in a smaller or cheaper PS3, none of this will really

matter to you anyway.

sony doesnt make too many games. they just make the platform for the games and then let software houses and game studios make the games for their console. all they could do is make a console easy to program for and with few limitations.

they have the second part down. the PS3 has the least limitations of the 3 consoles, unfortunatly making games taking advantage of this isnt the easiest thing int he world. and now that the console is out they cant change any of that.

Sony isnt to blame for the unoriginal games I would say EA is. they make it close to impossible to take risks and make original games. by pumping out tons of games that people buy rather than trying smaller game studio's products. so you dont see super original games like you saw on older systems such as Fishman, or Conker. so talk to EA about making real games instead of pumping out the same games with updated rosters. ohh Madden 2008, ohh figh Night 38, ohh New James bond movie video game, ohh [insert standard EA game title] 6

and really none of the systems are making anything too original. how many mario partys, and mario golfs, and mario whatevers do you need before they stop being original. every console has minigame games.

And thats why Xbox 360 games still look better than their PS3 counterparts. It takes way less programming to make a 360 game and then they just port it to the ps3 with some DirectX to OpenGL tools.

killzone 2, gta4, gt4, metal gear solid 4, KILLZONE 2, not to mentino a slew of other games that are going to wipe the xbox360 with their asses this year. year of the ps3 im claiming now.

you forgot UT3 for PS3 Unreal tournament has always been a killer game.

in my opinion it was the best multiplayer fps ever. well now its on PS3.

of course I cant stand first person sooters on consoles. since Ive been playing them with a mouse and keyboard for years. but im sure some people will like it since peple seem to like halo.

Honestly, who cares?

When this comes out, I will happily go out and buy a thick PS3 for cheaper (hopefully)
