Meh, I don't think it's too big of a deal, but it's a step towards people fully accepting gays, so I'm all for that.

Some people I thought to be totally rational, thoughtful people turned out to have irrational fears of homosexual people. Saying stuff like "they're fucked, period," and, "there should be a part of town just for gay people, so they'll stay away from us."

Oh, how little we have come.
 
We only just repealed the sodomy laws in all 50 states in 2003, oreo. No matter how late you think the year is, we're just gonna have to come to the realization that everyone older than 70 in this country needs to die off before we can have peace.
 
i was born in germany, went to school in austria, and i heard quite a few jokes about my origin (most tourists here are from there), and guess what? i dont care.

i bet at least a good part of gay people dont view "gay" as a direct attack on themselves. at least not how most people use it.

there are at least one dozen words (in german) that come from old, middle-age terms and now some people come up and say that this is pejorative to somebody. like who the fuck cares?

there are even movements to end the pejorative use of "pig" in respect to the feelings of pigs.

i dont say that i dont respect gays, or want to offend them, but imo this whole "politcial correctness" thing sometimes gets a little overboard.

i agree with the general meaning of the thread though (as in trying to reduce and minimize the use of possible pejorative from childhood on).

Being gay isnt something that people have control over. Being stupid, however, is easily remedied if you apply yourself and work hard at whatever it is that you are trying to get smarter at. Of course, there is a point where this is not an option. This point, is some sort of mental illness, which is exactly why it is inappropriate to call somebody a retard or make fun of them for any other mental illness. They cant help it in the same way that a gay person cant help being gay. And the same way that a person of a certain race cannot help being of that race. So your point is moot.
And to others who undermine the importance of using gay as an insult - you really have no idea. If you were gay, you would understand how difficult it is to live when people are constantly hating on your sexuality. Not only does it make you feel like shit, but it makes you feel like nobody is willing to accept your sexuality. This can lead to depression, and if bullying is present, there has been many cases of suicide. So get your head out of your ass and grow the fuck up. If you want people to treat yourself like an adult, then act like one.
 
No matter how hard stupid people work they are still stupid. Sure they can do all their homework, get good grades, grow up get a good job etc. but when you talk to them face to face you can tell they are fucking stupid.

That should make it unacceptable to make fun of but it's not.
 
People use it so much because people are so extremely offended by being called "gay" or "faggot". The attitude about the word is the problem. To us it's like the ultimate insult.

With that said, I don't really give a fuck. People use it at my school so much that it's pretty much part of their every day vocab. We are living in the "I love you, you love me generation and it's ridiculous the shit that people get their panties in a wad about.

Regardless, If i call somebody stupid, it is because they did something stupid. If I call someone gay, it will be because they did something gay (and i mean actually gay. as in homosexual. like guy on guy or girl on girl kind of gay).
 
It's all up to your standards. Something could be gay to you and not them and they get offended and their reaction starts the vicious cycle all over again. You can't win.

You are completely wrong. Do you know the definition of gay? This is what gay means -http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/gay - and if you use it offensively, people get offended. I cant believe your actually trying to defend using gay as an insult.
Additionally, we arent talking about somebody labeling something as gay because they think that it is actually gay. We are talking about using gay as an insult. They are using the word out of context, and it makes people who are actually gay feel like they cant be themselves.
And shut the fuck up about people not being so sensitive. You really havent any clue as to what it is like to grow up being gay and have it be accepted that people use your sexuality as an insult. You cant and wont unless you walk a mile in a gay persons shoes, so to speak. Think if somebody were to take a defining characteristic of you - any characteristic. Now think how you would feel if people constantly used it as an insult. Take this in combination with the fact that, relatively speaking, there are so few gays out there that it is super difficult to find somebody who is the same as you - who can understand what you are going through. It makes you feel terrible. It makes you feel like you cannot be yourself. It makes you feel like people dont care about you. It makes you feel like it is the world against you. It leads to depression, anxiety, and in some cases suicide. I have gone through my life with people constantly telling me that my life is fucked up and inherently wrong, and it sucks. So while you are going on living your life calling people gay and faggots for doing x, y, and z, you are genuinely hurting somebody. Maybe it isn't the person who you called a name, but people hear you. There are far too many idiots in this world, and it actually does make an effect in peoples life's. Good job, you have made yourself out to be an un-accepting douche bag (assuming you use gay/fag in this way).
