This, I find myself saying it from time to time. Saying like "oh that's gay." However, when I say it I never really think about a person or thing's sexual preferences. Just a phrase that I heard a lot when I was at an impressionable age. I try to fix myself every time I say it though, because I know it insults a lot of people.

If you guys knew the origins of a lot of words and sayings we use every day, there would be a lot of threads like these

Cigarrettes use to be called fags for god sakes. "faggot" is actually a derogatory word with no other use but to insult. The rest is slang. Louis CK sums it up. If you can't tell the difference between insulting someone with the intention of hurt and insulting someone to make it apparent that they are being really stupid or annoying well then I guess your just really stupid.

I dont want too sound like a whiny bitch, but this shit used too affect me a lot. my brother is literally a gay basher so he would always say how much gay people deserve to die. wasnt cool.

There were a few gay guys in my arch studio. They were cool, but it was always awkward when some of us would refer to something as gay. IT ISN'T MEANT TO BE DEROGATORY

You are taking this sooooooo much farther than what it really is. I thought we were talking about casually throwing the words fag or homo around, not constant harassment.

You should stay consistent in your argument.
 
not gonna lie i use them both a good amount in everyday life, and I really dont like it but its what ive grown up around and become accustomed to and it will probably never change to be completely honest. I absolutely hate it when I find that I have said it around a gay person, because although i disagree with the homosexual community in some aspects, that doesnt take away from the person and I would never want to insult them.
 
For the record I could argue just as well for your arguement as I could against it, so don't try and call me out as ignorant or not seeing the bigger picture.

Your friend was saying that everyone gets offended by some words and that people can get offended by the word "gaper" just as easily as the word "faggot." I was showing him that they are of two completely different categories and that in fact one category is more hurtful than the other. Far more hurtful. Calling someone a gaper over and over again doesn't lead to them tying a rope around their neck and jumping out of a tree in their backyard, or taking their dad's gun out of the nightstand drawer and firing a .22 round into their own skull. I'm not saying that what we do on this site will lead directly to someone committing suicide. I am saying that the words we're using are hurtful in a way that only a few words in the English language are, and that they can only push somebody in the wrong direction.
 
I understand what you mean but using those words relies entirely on the context of the situation. A bunch of shit head middle school kids harassing a poor child to the point of suicide is much much much different than some one calling their friend a fag.

Im not sure who you are referring to about the gaper thing, but your right thats just dumb.

Openness about sexual orientation is becoming more and more prevalent, and as times change so does what is acceptable to say. It used to be ok to say the n word, now it isn't. I see no issue with people taking offense to the overuse of "gay" and "faggot" and I think it is a shame that it has become a derogatory slur. Kudos to the OP
 
During the summer between highschool and college I asked friends did you know who you were rooming with in dorms, while at a big bonfire. One kid we all knew to be gay was there and he is a friend of mine so i said "who are you rooming with" and he replied " idk i'm doing random" I said " hopefully it's not some fag". The silence at the bonfire was so awkward, he smiled and said "yep", he knew it was just an accident, but I try to not say stuff like that. It's hard to break habits and the few gays I know understand it and are fine as long as it's not excessive. I will say though I hate it when gay people go out of their way to make sure people know they are gay though : / my two cents
 
It is, however, acceptabe too call something gay if you literally mean it as gay. IE a pink shirt, a guy skipping, shit like that. I'm not saying it isnt "bad" so too speak, but it is acceptable in my book.
 
I can now say I have been approved to say such things, because I really use gay a lot but just in that context. Usually along the lines of dude you're so gay. Or they will say something that didn't quite come out right we'd say "Yougay? Cause I mean I'll except you man." Pisses some of my buddies off pretty bad. All acceptable right my friend?

The hardest part of doing this has just been trying to find new words to use in place of the slurs; gay espeically since it was used so commonly. Lame seems to be working good for me haha. Now its just a matter of changing it permanently.
