So, I've been noticing something that has been permeating this site. I don't know if it's on the rise, per se, I may just be noticing it more. Doesn't really matter, what matters is that it's there. And that's all these gay insults. Calling people faggots, queers, homos, all this bullshit. Now, I'm a pretty laid back guy who, especially on the internet where I don't actually know anyone, isn't very quick to get into anyone's business. But this is just stupid, crude and backwards. We have gay members on this site. I won't name names because it's not my place to be dragging others into this but I'm sure many of us know a few. The way we use it, calling someone a faggot is the same as calling someone an asshole or an idiot. So what you're saying when you use one of these terms to get down on someone is that gay people are assholes, idiots, bad people who deserve to be looked down upon. Now I'm sure that most of the people who say these things have never even thought of it this way...but now you have. And now you should stop. I'm not trying to say you're all shit heads for saying it, I used to say it all the time, but I changed when I realized how it would make the kid next to me feel if he was a closeted gay; like he could never be honest with anyone because they would hate him for who he was. I don't say those things anymore and I don't allow others to say them around me. I tell them that it offends me and I ask them politely to stop, and I've changed my friends too because they know that I won't tolerate it. It's within your power to, little by little, remove this part of your vocabulary from you and those around you, and if enough of us insist on it, it will be rid of this site. And I think it's about time that that happens.
 
I agree, It probably wont change most peoples mind but if it changes one persons mind then it was completely worth making this thread.
 
I occasionally find myself saying these slurs in everyday life, and always catch myself and wonder why i said that. Its a societal habit that needs to be broken.

No, it's not fucking chill, that's why this thread was made. People shouldn't use gay, faggot, etc. as a pejorative EVER. People rarely mean it in a hurtful way, but it is. Just using it with your "bros" doesn't make it ok.

Two kids got in a fight today at my school because one of them called the other a faggot. I'm not 100% sure about the sexuality of the kid who got called a fag myself, but even if he is gay or bi it's not okay to call some one that. And it should be the business of him and him alone. Also this guy is one of the chillest kids in our school so to ridicule someone in that way is completely unnecessary and wrong. If he had called him a dick cause of something he did then that's perfectly alright but blaming some ones actions on sexuality is not okay.
 
Unfortunately, even as a relative and friend to numerous LGBT individuals, I still find myself falling into the trap of using those words, much to my displeasure. Any step to reducing its use is a step in the right direction.

I think everyone should stop being so sensitive.

People should stop calling other people dumb because individuals who can't talk could really get offended.
 
Im guilty of saying "thats so gay" quite a lot and not thinking twice about it. My brother is gay, and I have plenty of gay friends, so I have no excuse to not change my behavior, its just such a fuckin habit.

No idea, but it isn't okay. That word is one of the most degrading words to be found in the English language. It doesn't make you cool, it makes you look like a douche who is in favour of slavery and segregation. Stop.

i was taught that gay was a swear word by my peers as a younglin, and that calling someone that was an insult. only my parents told me one day when i used it as an insult that its wrong to say. people need to learn not to say there words, i feel like they are used completely innapropriately nowadays man.
 
I agree, usung gay as a degrading word is bad, but I really hate it when people get pissed off if i say some one is gay (and I mean literally, he is gay) and they say igs offensive to say that. No, its not, if some one is open about being gay, lesbian... ect. then they have chosen to say it publicly.

In all honestly, its a matter of maturity on a topic. If you are capable of anything more than the most basic use of language you will be able to substitute gay with something more "colourful" and less offensive to a large portion of the world.

finally someone with the balls to own it up. Half the people on here don't even give a shit they just want to give themselves a good image. we know we all use thats so gay as a regular slur. but even if we used any other slur to describe something in a negetive way, people would still find a way to make it seem offensive to others. like you said, if we started calling stuff thats so gaper, dumb etc. people would turn it against us for exploiting noob skiers or making fun of deaf people.
 
i completely and respectfully disagree with this thread. "gay" is one of my favorite derogatory terms. my favorite usages include "fucking gay" "gaytarded" "gay as fuck" "gayer than aids" "so gay it hurts" "flaming gay" and the classic just plain "gay".

obviously i dont go around using these terms in front of people who, you know, matter, like; congressmen, employers, teachers or police or firemen, in the company of some of the good ole boys, gay or not, i freely and openly describe things and being gay or related to some sort of faggotry. now, as i have spent a few years studying the english language i cannot in good faith limit myself to the usage of the word "gay" or other homosexuality related terms- that would be just silly, with so many other alternative derogates to consider- i do still feel that it is one of the finer put-down adjectives of our generation.

i think instead of changing our language as a whole we should simply take less offense to simple bullshit such as this. just today a non-semite friend of mine used the word "jew" in a particularly negative way and of course you might think that me being a jew i could be quite disturbed by this. to the contrary, i had a chuckle at my buddies remarked and quipped back to him that he was a "total fucking faggot"
 
i agree. I catch myself saying it sometimes and i always tell myself not to.. its weird. but it shouldn't be a common thing to say
