Serious Stuff

I recentely just returned from Sweden after a failed student exchange and home is hell. Everything here is ten times worse then my situation in Sweden and it is difficult for me to start up in school again and graduate. I know it would be a shame to my parents but all I really care about is skiing and when I turn 18 I get a sum of money because my father was killed in a car accident. And all I want to do is ski, I could be content with my life if I just had a job at a mountain and skiied for the rest of my life. But the problem right now is school. School will be very hard almost impossible to start again this year because almost none of my credits transfer. And it will be even harder to graduate without staying an extra year. My grades havent been too good either for the last two years I have been in school. Does anyone have any SERIOUS suggestions I am at a hard time in my life and I am considering dropping out and moving to a ski resort or immigrating to Canada to whistler and living there when I turn 18. I just thought NS's members who werent immature and will post nasty comments but mature and caring would maybe give me some SERIOUS advice. I dont feel like I can go to my school counselor because hes such a dick and my parents wont hear me talk of dropping out. Infact I am writing this when they are not home. Help please!

thats what I was planning on doing in whistler but I wouldnt know how to immigrate to canada. They probably wouldnt except me if I went through high school. But mammoth and squaw also look really entrancing also. I have never really been a strong student. I am intelligent but I just dont get the grades and I dont know why. I'm not quiting its just it seems like theres no other option unless I want to spend another three years in high school.

Get your shit together temporarily, get some better grades for your last year of highschool, then take some time off to really get your shit together. Move out, go skiing a lot, get a job at a resort, have fun, figure who you are, etc. Then, apply to university as a mature student, get in no problem, and go from there.

Just one way to deal with the problem...

Well I am not sure how hard it is too imigrate hear, but I know theres some sick places to ski/work in the states ie. mamoth squaw..Etc.

One good idea is too get a job at a ski mountain and take correspondence to get your highschool diploma. Tha is what im kinda doing during the winter while I ski. But try not to run away from your parents. I i have obviously never met them but usually its a bad idea cause there's alot of timew you might need them.

Hope any of this helped, good like,

I'm not talkign of running away but i think they would disown me anyways... my mom gets upset when I talk about not going to a four year college because I am really intelligent and she thinks I am selling myself short

When life gets you down... Go Jibbing!

Dont drop out but if you do, Whistler isnt too hot of an idea because it will be hella hard getting a job if youre an american...its the canadian way.

i say just get school don with there will be so much time to ski after school trust me that is what you need to do you will hate yourself if you drop out

Finish High School! Or You'll regret it later... Then ski! you're not even 18, you got plenty of time!!

Dropping out is one of the WORST things you could do. Stay in High School and at least get your deploma. Then if you want to, move to a ski town. But don't drop out, finish your education.

I spent last winter in Colorado and loved it, however ski towns (long term) aren't all they're cracked up to be (no offense to thoes who live in them...) I can't count the number of people I met who were 35 and all they knew how to do was wait tables or twist din's.

I'll bet sooner or later you'll get to the point where you want to move on and start some kind of career (maybe in the ski industry.) Without a high school deploma, you're not going to be able to do that. Don't sell yourself short.

It's only a couple of years...you'll be amazed how fast the time goes by. And when you finish, by all means, move to a ski town and live there for a while. I did, and loved it! I'd say it was probably the most fun I've had in my entire life. If you decide that being a ski bum is your calling, fantastic! But at least give yourself the opportunity to move on if you ever decide you want to. Having a high school deploma will give you that opportunity.

Sorry for the long post....it's just my 2 cents. Hope it helped! Dude....stay in school.

Finish highschool at all costs. Don't blow the dough when you get done. Take time off and work at a resort. Earn your turns. I worked in restarants at nite in my 20's in Crested Butte.

Skiied all day. Eventually figured out I needed

a career that paid better but I still get out

75 days a winter and I'm a real oldschooler that can crank em with the best.

dude you should seriously finish high school or BAD things will happen, you'll have trouble getting a job at mcdonalds... FINISH SCHOOL

i like juice

finish high school, there are more important things than college contrary to what many brainwashed fools will tell you, but consider college sometime in your life

die.

Once you finish high school, geet a job ski a bit, then apply to a college program that interest you as a mature student. There are lots of outdoor recreation/leadership type schools, around, that are based on skills, and arn't quite srtucture like a tradtional school system.,

dude, I really hate to say this, but skiing is secondary to life bro. You must get your lift on track and finish school. you will be able to ski when you can. you cant ski forever though, so GET something to fall back on dude. we are all in the same boat, maybe not as tragic as yours, but we are here for ya buddy......

CO is where its at bitches

ALRIGHT, LISTEN HERE.

Half of these kids telling you to move to Whistler are like 12!!

I'm a little older and wiser. Don't drop out. You already know that. When you graduate you can tell them to fuck off, but don't do that. Get out, politely, and meet people. Then after your done doing that, meet some more people. Work the best jobs you can get for a high school grad (which wont be much). Talk and ask questions. People you mett who you think are big time fuck ups actually do have some things to offer. Listen. Ski hard and think. You said it yourself, you're smart...so think.

I live in Boulder, CO and am currently running my own small time Landscape construction business. Unfortunately, I spent two years in college to find out I hated it. It has been really tough going against the grain, but it is always worth follwing your dreams. Although, everyone would probably love to sit around and ski all the time, thats definitely not going to make a smart person happy. When you find that little rush that makes you feel good, you'll know.

Peace,

_nick

I dont know bout in Gig Harbor, but up at Central Kitsap, we have this program called the Alternative High School. North Kitsap has one too. Basically it's high school without the classes. You go into a smaller school and work at your own pace and if you need held, teachers are there. It's a good program if you need extra credits to graduate.

i would say sticking out school would be more beneficial than dropping it, unless you were gonna start a company or had a family business you were gonna take over and didn't need the school. otherwise stick it out, finish this year, and then do what you want.

mah baby's got sauce, your baby aint sweet like mihne

finish highschool first man, then take a few years off and get your life sorted out, thats what im doing now, i just finished highschool and im now living in thailand until i can get things figured out.

but a highschool and some post secondary education are pretty much necessary nowadays, think about what happens if you get hurt and cant ski anymore.......

howd you blow your exchange in Sweden or whereever?

i know that in my area, you can attend a local community college during highschool hours, get what amounts to a ged, but it is like inbetween a ged and an actual diploma, and you even get to graduate with your hs classmates in the ceremony. it is designed for kids in situations like yours, or for kids who just failed out, or just have issues in a normal hs setting for whatever reason to be able to get at least a hs education, and if you are able to do something like that in your area, i suggest looking into it. a few of my friends were in the program, and all of them were happy with the results. hope this helps at all.

stay in school. i was in a similar situation last year. I was in high school and hating it. I had a job as a ski instrutor at a ski hill. I wanted nothing more then to drop out of high school ande ski full time. I am glad i didn't. you don't make shit for money. Use the money you are getting to go to college. It's not that hard and if you are smart you can schedule your classes so you can ski a lot.

Alcohol the cause and solution to all lifes problems.

dont drop out of school.. i thought it sucked for like 2 years ago now i think its kinda fun SHOCK but it is.

where did/do you live in sweden?

Thanks everyone and thanks Jodi I think its going to turn out to be alright. I like the suggestion of finishing then moving and starting a career in the ski industry. THen later going to college if need be.

I havent looked at this post for awhile so here are some answers to questions.

1. I got kicked out of sweden because I got caught in excess drinking and partying

2. I lived in Karlstad for four months its west of stockholm

3. Dropping out is something I am diffenetly not considering now. Its going to be tough but... thanks Jodi!

I thought everyone on here was immature 12-15 yr olds but I was wrong thanks everyone for showing me that your not!

Peace,

David

I'd suggest you hit up your local community college and see what GED classes they offer, you may be able to take classes at the college away from the High School Bullshit and it could work better for you, it did for some friends of mine...

one thing to keep in mind, your mom might be saying/giving you the impression that if you don't go to college she disown you, but chances are she'll always be there and support you, as well as give you a swift kick in the ass when needed.

Personally, I pretty much fell into the same boat about high school, I sucked it up and graduated. I then went on to College to proove my parents wrong (they said I'd never get in, never succeed in college, and I wanted nothing more than to prove them wrong). Well, I fucked it up, and had to drop out.

Over time, my parents were able to look past the college bit, and realize that if you looked at my educational carreer, me and the education system didn't mix. They now are able to admit that I probably made the right choice in taking responsibilities for my actions, successful and unsuccessful (college). I continued to take classes at local colleges/community colleges/adult tech centers, and have been able to get myself established with what could possibly be a potential carreer.

Just be aware that life is a little tougher (getting jobs that you deserve) without a college degree, but they are by no means impossible. But without your HS diploma, good luck, I wouldn't want to have to deal with that burden (and believe it or not, I have heard that getting a GED now is a lot harder than it used to be).

A couple things to keep in mind though are to have fun in life, but be responsible, get your shit done, and do it as good as you can, fun can be had once everything else is done. And never be satisfied with mediocrity.

Good luck and keep your head up, you'll succeed if you want it bad enough.

School ùay be boring and skiing may be fun. But no degree, no good job. You never know what happens, you may get injured or something. At least finish high school, you still have a whole live in front of you to ski. You aren't even 18 years old.

they wont except you to canada? dude canada excepts anyone. There more stinky pakis coming off the boats in vancover or in Toronto than you could amagine. NOt saying that your dirty, but non of them have jobs or probly ever went to highschool.

^ stinky pakis.... awesome...

Dude, your a smart kid, your gonna finish high school and then take your money and run, and while your running your gonna make more money at a sick job you have because you FINISHED HIGH SCHOOL, then when that big chunk of change runs out, you have a job, an education, and a lifetime ahead of you to settle down, ski, and be happy...

keep your head on you dude. your mom will always be by your side so dont worry about that

thanks everyone I just had a large conversation with her for about an hour and we agree that even if I decide not to go to a high top university I should go to some form of college after high school and get a degree. Then spend my money on moving and living where I want and find a job that I will love and be able to support a family later. (I know it was a pretty deep heart felt conversation) Then when she asked me what I wanted to do and I said ski. She thinks I am selling myself short by just wanting to ski the rest of my life. It would be different though to her if I got a degree then got a job in the ski industry in something I am good at. Like marketing or something around those lines. But keep the suggestions coming or any oppurtunities anyone hears of would be great if you either messaged me or added to this thread, thx

if you are serious about trying to get into the industry, why not look into colleges with skiing industry specific programs. I know U Maine, Farmington has one, and there are a couple other schools that offer them too (just don't know them off the top of my head).

but is it a university and not a trade school my high school really warns about trade schools. I would rather now get a degree in business then in ski business from a two year school but I'll check it out and tell you what I think. thx

Since this post is about education, you think Harvey would consider putting in spell check on the forum?

...Regular Pitbull with wings...

yeah, there are University programs geared towards the ski industry. I know the UMaine program (at least used to be a degree program - might be cert now though) used to be set up in Ski Area Business, Professional Coaching/teaching and a couple other aspects where the degree/program was geared like a ''normal'' business or marketing degree, but with a focus on the ski industry. They also used to hook people up with good internships too.

I know a guy who went there, got an internship with Salomon, and is still working for them today.

Its definately worth a look.

I change my mind everyday on what I want to do with my life, and I'm 22. Finishing high school is a smart idea, especially if you only have a year left. Get your high school finished, move away, ski for a few years, and FIND YOURSELF! Hopefully by then you'll know what you want to do, and it sounds like you'll have some money to pursue it. Best of luck dude....

definately you are making the right decision in finishing high school, you could also look at colorado mountain college, community college at the base of buttermilk in aspen, good times.

^ that would be a good idea for you, finish high school you know that, then look at university that is close to skiing and you have the best of both world, sorry i don't konw any off the top of my head but there out there. you should have plenty of time to ski if you stay ontop of you work.

school=no money = no skiing = insanity

i would want to be a ski rep.. or start a ski company that makes blank skis for a great price like shuvit does with theyre skateboards damn.. that would be sick
