Serious Helmet Question

just read some article the other day, some guy researching helmets for decades. So basically a helmet is useful that it prevents a concussion in minor falls where you hit an object with something like up to 20 mph. Anything bigger than this and the helmet is useless, so whatever is going to kill you will kill you with or without helmets. This is why mass helmets usage didn't decrease deaths, it only decreased minor trauma like concussions. So the insight here is - if you are riding X Games-style a helmet wouldn't help. If you are a regular folk riding the resort a helmet could definitely help you avoid some trauma

Link the article?

Concussion is not minor trauma when taken cumulatively.

I only wear one because missing ski days due to the most preventable concussions imaginable is the worst feeling. I have gotten concussed twice by hitting the back of my head with my skis (I ride mega low dins so my skis eject constantly). If I had been wearing a helmet I would have at least 10 more ski days in my life which isn't a lot but knowing that it was 100% preventable makes it enough for me to care.

Also mips works wonders. It didnt exist when i was growing up so a lot of people didnt really wear helmets because they only prevented skull fractures which are insanely unlikely with or without a helmet. I will link the article if any of you for whatever reason think otherwise, but in summary mips mitigates 60ish % of potential TBIs. I don't think people are dumb for not wearing one, but with mips tech you are seriously missing out! I can kinda confirm how effective it is, I smack head kinda frequently and haven't gotten anywhere close to a concussion. Anecdotal obviously but so far mips has been working for me and my friends that use it.

that’s my general attitude for them. i wear my helmet most all of the time, unless im being hella chill. to each their own, you just gotta understand risk management

How do your low dins translate out of the park? Any issues?

OP - many people do it for style factor and because they think “it looks cool”.

It varies. If I am skiing something genuinely scary where if I lose a ski I will get injured, I'll crank them up by 1 or 2. But for bc jumps, cliff drops, trees, and groomers I leave them low. Truthfully haven't had any issues with any sort of sketch ore releases since switching to STHs from attacks, the only time it happens is when a rail is grippy it can sometimes rip your ski off but that happens with high dins too

I’m no science man but I am an EMR and used to peel peoples brains off the XLs. I think what the full study suggests is that in straight head to ground impacts above a certain speed, helmets might not make a big difference. For the same reason the crumple zone on your car isn’t going to save you if you go 120 into a telephone pole.

so yeah if you’re mobbing super hard and you pile drive your skull into ice, you’re kinda phucked anyway. But if you manage to bounce off your ass first, might make the difference. Not to mention clocking your head on rails and trees.

I got a gazzilion head injury cases to tell about. My takeaway is I always wear a helmet. I ski the same with or without. That’s me. Massive fan of not telling people what to do though

definitely won’t save you from death but i’ve scraped my head on hard pack/rails with a helmet on and popped right back up, done it without a helmet and it hurts like all hell to hit my beanie-covered head into just about anything

Adding to this, I ride 7 at 150 lbs on attacks, strives, and pivots. I don’t do park or cliffs, but a ton of moguls and carving. Never had an issue except my one weird eject on a traverse today.

On the chart, I’m rated at a 9.5 but I think I ride my all mountain skis at an 8.5 and my park skis at a 9.5? I can’t remember. I had them cranked down to 7.5 at one point but had an unintended eject or two and cranked them back up. I ride attacks and pivots.

I really can’t understand this hot take.

you have 1 brain. You can’t replace it. You can’t repair it. Multiple concussions and impacts cause severe trauma to the brain.

go to a vfw and talk to some veterans and see what kind of issues their dealing with from multiple traumatic brain injuries.

this is the only right answer. only reason i argue for people to wear a helmet is because i want them to be safe.
