Self-teaching guitar?

If you play piano it will come super easy, but teaching yourself without much musical background is hard.
it really depends what kind of commitment you're willing to make. if you want to be able to play songs, like tabs, then its pretty easy, thats how i started about 2 years ago. but if you really want to learn it you need to learn some theory and learn all the notes and how chords work and how chord progression works, and thats pretty difficult to teach yourself. i actually just started taking lessons this summer so i could learn straight theory, and i've learned more in the past 3 weeks than i did in the past 2 years of playing tabs and shit. when you know the theory you can improvise like a beast and thats what guitars all about for me just jammin with my buddies.

my teacher is a fucking animal at guitar, played in the band for alicia keys and plays in a local band here in cincy now, but we were talking about websites and he said there is SO much self teaching stuff on the internet, but most of it is garbage, and this site is fuckin money. the trainers are probably the most helpful thing, but check all that sheit out.

Take some theory lessons for a year, then quite and teach yourself. I played piano before playing guitar and found that lessons didnt help much. I started teaching myself with simple scales and speed exercises and I've gotten so much better than i have with an instructor.
Teaching yourself is key to finding your own unique playing style. Just look at it this way, most major guitarists taught themselves. They had no formal lessons and developed everything on their own.
Examples: Slash, Eddie Van Halen, Angus Young, Jimmy Page, Zakk Wylde, Dimebage... and many many more.

i taught myself how to play bout six months ago
cept i played piano so i understand some sutff from a musical point of view

learn bout tabs and stuff itll make things pretty easy
the lessons are pretty advanced but u can pretty much leanr any song you wwant just by tabbing it
