It's that time of the year again!

NS Secret Santa 2015.

THIS IS NOT THE REQUEST THREAD! Requests here will not be granted.

erica, B-Philly (Brandon) and I (Rachy) will be managing Secret Santa again thanks to snwbrdmilf (Ashley) who handed it off to me last year.

Last year ended up being a 100% success. One gift never arrived (postal error), but several members chipped in for that individual and all was well. Not everyone loved their gifts. Some had trouble sending, some had trouble receiving... but everyone got something. We ended up with nearly 100 gifts exchanged.

Everyone paid a $20 deposit via Paypal. Once we had a tracking number, you were returned your deposit at $19.12 (Paypal keeps a little for themselves).

So now we discuss what can we do better, take your suggestions, and once we have all that sorted and our timeline, we will create the request thread with the rules. We are starting early this year since there were so many individuals who missed out last year from not seeing the initial threads.

Rough calendar:

Oct 1 - 15, get everything sorted out with rules/backend stuff that Brandon, Erica, and I need to set up

Oct 15 - 31, requests honored and information due.

Nov 7 - 10, matches sent out

December 10th, Tracking codes due.

Discuss!

October 1st = christmas time

Look at the community here.... Gifts were due by the 11th (?) last year and people were still sending me tracking numbers 2 days before Xmas. And a lot of members complain that they are only in the NSG forum every few weeks or so, so this gives them the heads up that it's coming soon.

Is there any requirements such as age or is it open to any and everyone?

Age requirement has always been 15 due to the issues with having money to spend on a gift/being able to get it to the post office and so forth.

That being said, the two groups that caused the most issues last year were the still in high school members and the been on for a year, but doesn't really contribute members.

So 15 is up for debate, but it's really up to everyone to decide. Most of the members last year were in the 18 - 25 range with make 10 - 15 over than and 10 - 15 below that.

What rachy said and you had to be on NS for a least a year!

ok, if I'm 16 would you be cool with that? Im on usually daily because I have a last hour study hall. Not really struggling with cash since I'm working atm. Are the gifts usually skiing related or can it be anything?

pooop. Well I have been on NS for a year, just not with my account. Made on last August actually but forgot my password so made a new one in January.

This is where we discuss this stuff....

I'm not opposed to doing it differently .

Last years rules were

15+

Been an active member for at least a year (up to our discretion)

Had positive feedback/rating/ban history

willing to pay a $20 deposit (we were lenient in some cases)

If everyone who wants to participate agrees on this, great. If anyone who want's to participate doesn't, now is the time to take your stand.

and you're the type of guy I could vouch for being a hyland kid and I know I could send John18061806 to personally kill you if you didn't follow through :)

truuu. I also did take that box off your hands. I will follow through, count on it, or have john take my skis and through them into Lake Superior

Another thing we could try is if everyone had a $1-2 buy in (non-refundable), so that if someone doesn't get their gift, we had the finances to buy them one and don't have to deal with refunds. (Cause if you can't take a $2 loss you probably shouldn't be doing SS....).

Then any remaining funds can be put towards gifts or donated to a ski charity.

I vote for this over the 20 dollar deposit. I would rather have my dollar go to skiing than paypal fees.

I think you should do a $10 non refundable deposit, and if someone doesn't get a gift you hook it up, and all the extra money is donated to a charity (alpine initiatives?)

thats just my 2 cents. Christmas is a time of giving, and if Newschoolers could come together, and turn something simple like that into something big. Thats the kind of thing that makes me proud to be apart of this community.

just a thought.

No offense to anyone, but I wouldn't mind setting the age limit at 18.

The other thing I was thinking, if a member has proven to send their gifts multiple times, is the $20 deposit necessary. I don't mind doing it, it just feels like a lot of extra work for you guys that put it on.

Super stoked to do this again. I can't wait.

So this whole age thing means I probably shouldn't send a jug of my apple pie moonshine?

Definitely send that if you get me!

Im stoked done it every year. So much fun

Definitely wanna to apologize to hugo for fucking that whole situation up last year. Not sure if I'll be able to do this again this year but Hugo you're getting something from me regardless this year. Still feel shitty about how that went down.

Can't wait for it this year! Last year was fun! I liked the way it went last year....not much to complain about from me!

When you're paired up with somebody, you'll know their age.

This is one of my favorite parts of NS. Big shoutout to Rachy, Erica, and B-Philly for running this shit again!

I'm also super supportive of a donation/slush fund as opposed to giving money to PayPal.

That said, allow me to play Devil's Advocate for one second. A small, but real, fear I have is that some kid is going to see that everyone donated $X for the purpose of a "backup" gift in case someone doesn't get one. It gets close to mail-out time and for one reason or another, shit got tight in this kid's life and they decide not to send a gift with the logic being "well, there's money for this! Just use that! I don't need to send a gift."

That's my concern. If we could find a way to alleviate that risk, or even collectively to say "fuck it" and take the risk, I'm in. My vote is for High Fives Foundation.

Additionally, I know we're discussing removing the $20 deposit, but last year was both the first year a deposit was required, and the first year everyone got their gift. The deposit definitely played a part in it.

Wasn't the rule you got banned if you didn't send a gift or something like that?

Woohoooo my favorite time of the year! got some good ideas for gifts:) money for me this year is much tighter so a non refundable fee is a little irksome for me but if thats what we all decide im game. just as long as everyone gets a rad gift.

A potential idea off this one is with the 20$ deposit (if we decide to do that again) you can refund 18 of it back and use the extra 2$ as the backup for lost gifts.

This is a valid point. I like the $20 deposit. I think it helps a lot. I just feel it's a lot of work for those that run this.

This is my favorite part of NS though. It's a cool way to make a new friend through the site.

But there's still consequences like there was previously. - perma ban, I come after you and beat you with a bat while simultaneously pouring cheap vodka into your eyes, etc

Id say age limit as 16 MAYBE 17, I've been active sense I was 13 (on a few different accounts) and will be 17 by the time its time to send out gifts and do paypal Money. I'd really like to be part of this and it would be a shame to finally be able to but then have the rules changed.
