Second lens for t4i

Posted in the lens suggestion thread and was advised to make a thread of my own. I have the 18-55 kit lens at the moment and would like something solid for shooting on hill. Been looking at the Canon 50 mm options and may get the 1.8 as well as another lens you guys suggest. Need to keep it under $300. All help is greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!

filming with the 50mm stationary probably wouldnt be ideal because it doesnt really allow you to stand on the knuckle. what is your budget?

oh shit sorry dude. Around here you will be steered towards the tamron 17-50 lens. Really nice quality according to other people. Id also recommend the rokinon 8mm fisheye if youre into that. pretty cheap these days

Tamron 17-50 non-vc....can definitely be found for 300 or less on eBay, some people on here have said they have picked one up for around 250 before I think. Start looking now and one will pop up eventually

which he would sell....

Julian are you looking more for a zoom lens versus a prime or doesn't that matter? Will you be filming night-time stuff? The sigma 30mm 1.4 or the canon 28mm 1.8 might be good options to look into. the 30mm on ur camera is almost the same as a 50 on my camera (full frame) and it is by far my favorite lens size and is almost always on my camera. If you're ok buying used you shouldn't have a problem finding either in your budget.

The Tamron 17-50 is a good option as well, but I cant speak from experience, just from others reviews. Pretty sure MikeBlatt or Abe Krieger is selling one right now

If you had a bit more money I would say tokina 11-16, but maybe that will be a future purchase for ya.

good luck!

this is like saying you shouldn't get a pencil because you can write fine with a chunk of charcoal. sure, you can do it, but if you sell the kit lens and invest another 200 for the tamron, you have a far superior lens in so many ways.

I agree completely but I'm pretty sure he wants to add another lens to his arsenal, hence the "second lens for t4i" rather than replace one he already has...

he never said, I want X focal length or anything like that, the tamron is probably his best option for versatility filming skiing, you don't exactly need 1.8 to film skiing, and the tamron gives you a wide and a medium telephoto.

Why not sell the kit lens ($100), and then buy a tam 17-50, and then if you have some extra money pick up a 50mm prime (either the 1.8 or an old vintage one, which would be cheaper). What kind of a focal length are you looking for? Do you need something more on the telephoto end, a more wide angle one, or do you jsut want some sort of prime to get better IQ and be able to get more shallow dof. Really depends on what you want.
