Sean's New Car

I could've just posted this in the other thread about my suby, but this deserves its own thread.

You might've read about this in that other thread. My grandpa has had this car forever, and I've always been in love with it. He is dying of cancer right now, and gave it to me. Me and my dad drove down to Arizona where he lives a few weeks ago, and towed it home.

It was originally a 1961 Volkswagen Beetle (VIN 3393927) built sometime in August of 1960. The pan is cut and welded 14.5 inches shorter, and then the fiberglass body is just bolted on top.

It has a rebuilt 1600cc motor. It hasn't been driven for about 4 years, but I got it up an running last friday for the first time. The engine still needs a little tinkering before its really road worthy, but I take it around the block usually once a day. Sometimes it won't start at all though, so I don't know.

Kevin helped me bleed the brakes (there was no fluid in the lines!). A friend is going to paint it for me, but not for a few weeks. I want it completely drivable first. I'm going to repaint almost the same color, but right now its a shitty ass spray can job. No clear coat or anything. So we're gonna strip it down, patch up all the holes and flaws, etc, prime it, then he's gonna paint it for me. So anyways, I'll get some more pics up, but heres a nice one!

Luckily, the pedals are perfect for me. Which is REALLY nice, cause the seats are rusted in place... you can't slide them, hahahaha.

Anybody taller than me can't drive it though!!! Won't be an issue once I put new seats in, but who knows when I'll actually drive up to canada to get them (getting some seats from a 03 Subaru Impreza RS for it)

Finished with the new parts for the distributor today (new points, rotor, condenser) and found out the fuel line was clogged. Un-clogged it, and went for a drive with the new parts. Holy shit. So this is what people kept meaning when I'd say the buggy would be slow, and they'd all say 'Oh, you'll be surprised'. My Subaru is pretty quick. But the buggy, man you step on it and it GOES. Only about 80hp I think, but with how light the car is, thats like me having 200hp in the Suby. I've been driving around with no windshield too! hahaha...... no insurance either..... or plates on the car (although I do have them)

thats fuckin ill man I hope to see some video of a ski tow in behind that thing at somepoint

the magazine is called 'POWDER' cool! - my stupid non-skiing friend

^^^^ this man is a genius (seriously, we're doing this next year in the spring)

Or I suppose we could switch it around, and have a skier tow the buggy.

wow, i never noticed, but its exactly like the song 'little blue dune buggy' by the presidents of the united states of america.

hahahahaha, holy shit! I completely forgot about that song! Too bad I ain't putting a stereo in it, I could drive around blasting that! hahaha. thats funny.

y arn't you putting a stereo in... driving anything without a radio would drive me crazy no matter what kind of car it was...

To answer your question christine, I've actually got a couple of reasons. I played around with the idea, because I could go ALL out with a stereo on this.

The sides of the buggy as you can see in the pic step in so-to-speak. I can get some side body parts that fill that in, and make it look more like a 'car'. I could then completely seal the fiberglass, and cut holes on the inside, thus making the body itself have built in fiberglass speaker boxes. A 10 inch sub on either side, with some nice two ways or something, and mount the deck in the dash. It would be killer.

But as I said, I've got a couple reasons...

-I can do all that crap to my suby

-This is more of a 'classic' car (define that as you will) and thus, doesn't need to associate with the countless 'thumping' cars (not to speak ill of large subwoofers, as I am the subwoofer king)

-Just adds more mess to the already fucked up wiring mess

and most importantly of all....

-There is no way in HELL you could ever hear music, no matter how loud, over the exhaust.

Trust me, you don't need music driving this car. Its impossible not to smile when driving!

kelly? uhh... crystal? .... kylene?.... I have to apologize, I'm not good with names, and I've only met you once.

you've met me twice... my name is Sarah... huckbunny3 is christine...

that's right! sarah! haha, sorry about that.

I know THAT Christine, for some reason I thought you were Christine too. Like I said, bad with names.

Back to the Buggy. Lowered it today. About two inches, it is SOOOOO low now, I love it! Just did the front, cause the back is torsion bars and is gonna be a big bitch. Maybe I'll take a stab at it tomorrow. The front is perfect though, the tires go right up to the fenders. It'll actually probably rub a little if the wheels are turned, MEH!!!

Taking it in to Buttera monday to get a new fuel line.

Dont worry, its a controlled slide.

Fuel line didn't need replacing, but I replaced the rubber sections as they were all shot. Flushed out the fuel tank. Did some other stuff too.

At Buttera, they did the timing, adjusted the valves, belt... basically tuned the engine. Yet it still runs like total ass. Most definately carburetor issues now. Gonna get a rebuild kit and try to rebuild it myself, if that fucks up I'll just buy a new carb straight up.

new carb!!!!!!!!!!!!

everything is painted and ready to be re-installed on the motor tomorrow

Painted the following:

fan shroud (top and side pieces)

generator, fan cover

coil

intake manifold (WHITE!!!)

Plus cleaned off the generator pedistal and oil filler, fuel pump, and distributor.

Carb is all rebuilt, cleaned, and good as new. My original one was absolute SHIT. Found out today its from a 61 40hp. The new one (30 Pict-1 instead of 28 Pict-1) is from a 63.

I was postin some stuff on the Buggy forum, and remembered I hadn't put much in this thread.

Haven't worked on the buggy in months, only driven it a little (can only drive when its sunny out.... no top)

The gas tank is currently leaking like Cindy during that time of the month, so I kinda feel a little nervous driving it, you know? I've got a fire extinguisher in it, but if it went up in flames, there would be no time for that, it would be toast.

What came out of the old carb....

Those pictures are from July, hahahahaha.

Since then I've raised the back end (I had lowered it, but way too much) and put on a new exhaust, which sounds fantastic, but makes it so you can't get the valve covers off, thanks EMPI.

Hey nice bug dude! Me and my friend have a dune bug project, that hasnt gotten very far. Its a 69 IRS, no motor or tranny yet, but its got front discs. SO if you see a motor for less then 500, let me know, we're gonna be buying AAA's tranny and engine once we get enough money.

And we just stretched the rear torsen bars to give us some more lift, i guess were doing two opposite projects.

I haven't been buying entire "rolls", I just get small bits. But the place I get it from is CHEAP. its about $26 for a sheet 24in x 70in.

dirt cheap.

Got my new gas tank back from my friend today, he relocated the filler to the center for me, $40, but he did a GREAT job.

It looks a little off center which is a little annoying, but I know it was a total pain in the ass to weld, so I'm glad he did it for me.

Now i just need to put some rust-protectant sealant stuff in there, and I can get the thing driving again!

kevin was at the cabin.

it wasn't fun, the bolts were all carriage bolts (i.e. round on top) and the nuts were nice and rusted on. We had to use the dremel tool to cut sides off the bolt heads to make something for vice grips to grab onto. Total pain in the ass.

Now that its all off its gonna be so easy to work on though, I could rebuild the engine so easy without pulling it now.

I do need to get a new speedometer cable though, couldn't figure out how to disconnect it so I said fuck it, and cut it.

......I did find out its going to be a VERY tight fit for the WRX seats, gonna have to do some custom work to fit them in. Basically just the brackets are too wide, so I may have to rig something up for under there, we'll see.
