Sean Pettit

If you want the real, honest-to-god answer (even though it's a sucky truth), here it is: he's in the backcountry and not in the park.

dane tudor, sammy carlson, parker white are better all-around free skiers. they compete in a variety of comp styles and film much more well rounded segments.
 
parker white is not even close to that level.

sammy should have won it easily. he had the ending segment in the PBP movie, made his own movie, won x games, and generally killed it harder than anyone else.

henrik put out some web edits. sweet.

Sean had a slightly sicker version of last years MSP segment...which was a slightly sicker version of the year before that...
 
I didn't even read the article on Harlaud in this months' freeskier since I totally don't approve the votes !
 
He is definitely my favorite skier to watch. He just looks like he is having so much fun all the time
 
The problem is that he didn't deserve the win. Skiing isn't only about park and underkneepants+tees. Okay, don't get me wrong, this guy ain't bad skier, but he got the title of BEST SKIER OF THE YEAR.. Oh well it is done now so whatever.
 
Obviously it's not only about park, but it is about style and creativity and Henrik has a lot of that. I don't know if he deserved it or if someone else did, and I'm not saying Pettit doesn't have style, but henrik's style (imo) is very creative and unique, and he pushes skiing and I think that the award is well deserved. There will always be more than one great skier in any given year so choosing one SOTY will never be easy.

Anyway that's my opinion.
 
Sean Pettit is a fucking great skier, but is that going to change where skiing is right now? 85% of the populace is focused on park and urban, and to me, getting a sick segment and having fun while doing it is better than winning any contest, and Henrik did exactly that.
 
Glad to see some members on here agreeing with me.

It's too bad that skiing is "cool" now and focused on the image.

But let them have the terrain parks, tall ts, and grind slides

I'll take the powder, the face shots, and the untouched backcountry pillow zones.

Just a question for everyone who thinks Sean Pettit is the next coming of christ. How much backcountry and big mountain skiing have you actually watched to come to this conclusion?
 
I'm 25.... I've been skiing my whole life. Not saying that I've seen more than anyone else, and I'm certainly not saying Sean is the second coming, but he is damn good, goes huge and can still throw some big tricks. To me, he's the epitomy of what skiing is all about.

If I was picking skier of the year, Harlaut would be an honorable mention at best.
 
he had a little taste of backcountry riding, put out a video project, did a bunch of awesome new rail tricks, had some good comp placements and lastly did a NOSE BUTTER DOUBLE. that is fucked and he deserves to win off that alone.

too many people on this site dont give park or urban the respect it deserves. if it was so easy to be as good as henrik dont you think more people would be on his level?
 
it's true he does go huge and he's probably one of the best at throwing down tricks off of big airs. But as far as actual skiing he doesn't even compare to some of the other top big mountain riders. i have yet to see him ski a high consequence line with aggression in any of his segments, all of it is mini golf shit. Until he starts competing in FWT or stepping it up in his segments i fail to see how anyone could call him SOTY.
 
i remember only 10 years ago all they shot was basically backcountry and the amount of rails compared to videos that are coming out now crazy. every video now a days is park and urban so i think that it makes it that much more special when we see someone slaying pillows or doing some crazy corks or dubs in the backcountry. i dont know, but thats just my opinion... for the record all those skiers kill it but i do think sean has been charging hard and did deserve it, not that henrik didnt...
 
I couldnt agree with you more. I dont know how Henrik even came close, sean's in a league of his own. Hands down the best skier on the planet right now. Too easy.
 
Ehhh, I'm gonna disagree with you saying that Sammy is way better that PWhite. I think that Sammy is the better all around skier, but PWhite just looks so much smoother and slightly better in the backcountry.

And to everyone that says being a good skier isn't just park and urban, well it isn't just about the backcountry and big mountain, either. I agree that Henrik shouldn't have won, I personally think that Sammy should've. Kickass PBP seggy, his own movie, gold at X games... yeah.
 
I think park/urban gets waaay toooo much respect. There are a million people doing that shit. Not many Sean Pettits out there.
 
So the voting was done online, and who is chilling online all the time? NS, with its boner for Bdog and edollo. The backcountry crowd is obviously gonna be a bit older (what teenager has a sled, or the patience/knowhow to hike up BC zones?), and I feel like they're less likely to hang out online and vote for a freeskier poll. Makes perfect sense that a park skier will win it.

But god damn Sean P, that was ridiculous. Something about throwing spins off massive cliffs in the middle of a line into pow just makes my jaw drop in a way that no park edit ever would.
 
I can't believe you guys are making such a big deal of this SOTY competition. It was founded on the opinion of 14 year old kids. Sean does sean, Henrik does henrik, They both contribute to the ski community in their own right, and both deserve props. Why compare 2 very different skiers for one title?

 
Guys, it is a GOOD thing that Henrik won and the focus is on park. This way, when kids from the midwest/east come to your local mountain, they waste time flailing around in the park. One less kid side slipping fresh snow away while supporting the ski industry buying new shit every season = a good thing overall.
 
jacob wester SOTY he is sick look up his MSP extra video plus he got 3rd at dumont cup 3rd at big air x games and competed in dew. He is a well rounded skier who slays the BC and the park.
 
OH MY GOD THIS. Jacob is soooo sick and i never even see his name mentioned on this site. This is the best post in this whole thread.
 
sensible response. His athlete extra is off the chain. There are several skiers who would have made great candidates for SOTY. Henrik was not one of them.

I don't care if he did a nose butter double. It's one trick. Mad props, but one trick doesn't make you skier of the year imho
 
This. I feel like this segment just captures big mountain skiing in such a perfect way. And Sean not only is hitting these ridiculous lines and drops, but doing tricks off of many of them.
 
Sean petit didnt get it because he tried to chat up my mates gf and offered her $5 to sleep with him and was generally overly cocky. We find it funny but im going to go with that. If i was her i would have done it just for the claim rights
 
This I'd ski powder if I could any day, I'd also love to shred some BC but coming form MA as of now I can't do that. It doesn't mean I don't support it either, after watching Sean's segment I can easily say he is one of my favorite skiers.
