Sea to sky gondola cable snaps

article says they’ve been maintaining it, maybe it was a bad splice, or someone fucked with it

idk if I’d want to try and cut a cable under that much tension tho

If it wasn't running I don't see how this could have been a mechanical issue. Especially since it is a fairly new lift.

My money is on somebody tampering with it but I honestly have no idea. Hopefully they release pictures of the broken ends of the cable

At least whoever did this didn't pull some shit to get the lift stopped during the day and went and cut it with people on it.

The article says that they believe someone "deliberately cub the cable." I don't know where they buy their cable cutters from but that's some fucking quality if ya ask me.

Straight up.. And did they just clip it standing right there? I woulda been 500+ feet away

Yea no kidding. Those cables must have some serious whip to them.

Seems insane somebody could cut through the rope whilst balancing on one of the towers using a portable angle grinder of some sort.

I can't imagine what would happen to you if you cut through a haulrope under that much tension, the whiplash back from it would be....unimaginable

Must have sounded like a fuckin aeroplane coming down to the local campers and night shift workers, mad shit.

I don't think it would if you have the right wheel. I know I'm talking about completely different grades and types of steel but think how long it takes to cut 3/4" rebar. And how much of the cable does one have to cut before it can't support the static weight of itself and the gondola cars?

So lift cables are metal on the outside fabric on the inside with the fabric taking most the weight. If one wanted to cut a cable it would actually be pretty short work with a angle grinder or a torch.

Based on my experience working with rebar in concrete.. it would easily cut you in half like butter

Sounds like someone’s trying to cover up their mistake or freak accident , possible use of bad materials by blaming sabotage

It’s not a hard cut to make , but to survive it !???

i hope you're joking.. there is no fabric in lift cables. its wire rope wrapped around more wire rope.

I was always told the core of the lift cables were fabrics like hemp. They would tell us don’t stop the lift if there’s a fire until the line is clear because if you stop that would burn through the core and could snap the line.

I've never tried but I doubt it would take too long with some spare cut off wheels. As long as your cordless gas some decent power. Also at a certain point It might go on it's own? Idk though even a few strands are pretty fucking strong.

Also would not want to try for many reasons so no idea. Just thinking it would take

They may have used an acetylene torch, which burns at 6,000 degrees and is used to cut huge cables

They use one here at the 28:30 mark:

Given the extreme tension of the line, if I was going to do something like this I would sever the cable between the two sets of sheaves where both the brittle bar and cable catchers are over the top of each set of sheaves this would most likely give adequate protection from the whiplash of the cable. This would he how I would do it.

Even one of the "portable" torch setups are pretty heavy. Would def work though.

Its retaliation by the Aussies after Whistler banned heckler's rock for the Crankworxs' Canadian Open DH race.

But really though, I guarantee it was a fucking Aussie.

Group (Herd) mentality. Everyone gets really brave to be the biggest jerk.

You seem to know a suspiciously large amount about cutting cables...

The fuckin balls.....terrible incident all around and glad no one was injured or killed but you're totally fucking mental if you were able to do that and not get smoked. Pretty bad day for you if you were to get whipped by a cable if you're able to live through it

Walk it off.

Haha if someone deliberately cut that cable I’m sure they would be in pieces rn

Someone cut the cable (not completely just enough to cause serious damage) and then due to it being weakened it snapped I believe

crazy shit
