so this season of scuba diving is starting for me. anyone selling stuff? or have any cool stories?

anyone training to be a commercial scuba diver?

thoughts?!?!

I tried to go scuba diving once, and the people were like, "Sorry, you can't go scuba diving, you have diabetes. Here's a snorkel and some flippers. Have fun!" Those fuckers...

Got mine when i was 11 in the dominican republic. I went on 2 dives to a depth of 13 Metres (cause i was only 11). One the best things i have ever done in the water. It was so cool to see stingrays and coral and different fish from their point of view. You gotta do a bunch of water and paper tests but their easy and its worth it in the end.

under water welder....make so much $$$$$$. Such a rare trade they make a ton of money...mid six figures. Though it is extremely dangerous because your working with electricity under salt water....

after i graduated high school i went to a dive school in key west for a semester. It was such a great time, if your looking to go professional or even under water welder ^, check out Florida Keys Community College, they literally have every thing you need if you want to start a dive profession.

same but i think i was twelve. it takes a decent amount of work but it is worth it. i always loved seeing the differences in nature. and also there are some big motherfuckin fish which is cool

I have my OW certification and scuba is the shit, so much fun and so relaxing. I was gonna try and become and instructor but it pays shit and doesn't last. So hopefully I can dive in the military.

just got my open water this winter after having snorkeld my whole life nd just did a trip to the phillipines primarily for the diving. i love diving

word man.. im four weeks in the commercial tender training at Minnesota School of Diving.

What kinda helmet do you have and how long you been CDiving?

its gonna be such an interesting career

any divers have any gear they selling or that they suggest. im just starting to buy equipment.

got a 7mm wet suit w/hood and boots and now i need everything else.....

Bumping this thread cause I just went on my first OW dive today. Definitely one of the sweetest things I've ever done. Visibility was only like 8ft and the water was maybe 50 degrees F and made you go numb after a couple minutes, but I had a blast. Our max depth was 25 feet though... I kinda wanted to go deeper.

The classes got kinda boring because we just sat in a 12ft pool and did a bunch of skills (mask clearing, out of air situations, buoyancy exercises) every week but was always a good time nonetheless.

For anyone wanting to pick up equipment, go to http://www.divers-supply.com/Default.aspx You can get a setup for less than a thousand. And the only cost from there really is getting your tank filled.

Bumping for my first OW dives today, visibility was around 15 feet, water 50 F. In my wetsuit it wasn't that bad after you got used to it (numb) went to about 40 feet, saw a giant pacific octipus and a bunch of other marine life. More dives tomorrow!

I tried once when I was 12 in the Keys. Goggles kept filling up with water, water was REALLY choppy, panicked, mouth-piece fell out twice, although I remember to clear it both times. Needless to say, I freaked out and went back to the boat and haven't tried diving since, although if I had the chance, I would. Overall, 10/10, great experience, would bang.

ok, so I've got my Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Wreck Diver, Deep Diver, Rescue Diver, Boat Diver, Search & Recovery Diver, and a few others...I do search and recovery diving in my area, so whenever there's a body in the river, or if a car goes in the river, or a boat sinks, etc., we go out and get it. Bodies get really disgusting after they've been in the water for 48 hours...shit's gross.

Been diving for 20 years now. It's the fucking shit. It's right up there with skiing imo...

OP - what exactly are you looking for equipment wise? We've got so much shit lying around, it's almost ridiculous.

how'd you get into search and rescue?

I just started diving about 18 months ago. only have 25 dives, but I love it.

honestly, my old man. he's a dive instructor, and also 5-0. he was on the dive team for one of the local p.d., but budget issues caused all of the local police and fire departments to disband their dive teams back in the mid 90's, so we basically just started doing freelance work.

ugh, god fucking damn it. had a long post typed, and my fucking page refreshed and i lost it all.

at any rate, belize is going to be dope, dude. i dove there a few years ago. unfortunately, a hurricane had just gone through a week or so prior, so the visibility wasn't the greatest, but still an amazing experience none-the-less. my girl and i never made it out to the blue hole because it's about a 4 hour boat ride each way and we were only there for a few days, but we did a lot of diving on the reef off of amberigris caye. as i'm sure you know, this is the second largest barrier reef in the world....second obviously to the great barrier reef off of australia.

you'll have a ton of fun, dude. i'd love to see pics and vids after you return. if you happen to think of it, pm them to me or send me links...whatever. love to see other people's adventures.

that sounds awesome. I've only done up to my advanced. lookin to get my rescue when I have a break from classes.

just found out that a local dive shop goes out from new london area in connecticut into the long island sound. hopefully next spring/summer/fall I can go out a few times.

I picked up a gopro for when there's better visibility. has the flat lens and red filter for deeper dives. pretty stoked about it

it really is. and the pay is un-fucking-believable. we usually get $250+/hr for dives, so pretty much any time we suit up is a $1,000 day. talk about easy money....

3rd and 4th dives of the weekend today. 30 ft visibility, not to cold. Found a new octo when checking in some little dens. All in all a great day, although our second dive wasn't to great because of a bunch of people not in our group kicked some silt up and dropped our visibility to about 1 ft.

damn that's sick. where?

and for some reason, every time I dive half the people tend to be completely retarded. they flail around and kick shit or just have no common sense. I understand it can be pretty technical underwater and understanding how to maneuver properly, but don't fucking Tasmanian devil straight into silt/sand/etc.

Alkai cove 2. Pretty interesting site, something is always changing there.

As for people always flailing, there is always someone who does that. It is pretty technical under water, but flailing WILL make it harder, not easier. The only time I flail is when i surface, and am trying to change my point of bouyance to my waist so i'm not face down, and that's only when it is pretty choppy out.

i hate that shit. we call them "mud puppies". unfortunately, until a diver becomes experienced enough to be able to adequately control their buoyancy, it's a pretty common problem. i go with my pops a lot when he certifies new divers (as a secondary back up diver in case shit gets hairy) and i see this shit all of the time.

one of the places we take new divers actually has this nice platform at about 25 feet. it's probably 25x25, so it's big enough for a group of people. it's perfect for practicing buoyancy without mucking up the bottom of the lake.

bump, just got back from cayman, those walls are beautiful and I saw the hugest fucking lobster.

anyways, is there a pretty chill scuba forum website like ns anywhere?

Word.

I found scubaboard to be too much of an older generation vibe, (no profanity, drug or alcohol talk, etc).

We may be out of look though considering not too many people of the younger generations dive as much.

yeah, i don't know of any ns type scuba forums either.

unrelated, heading to cozumel to dive for a week with my girl and my pops at the end of march. fucking stoked.

cozumel is amazing if you don't spend all your time on the most popular sites.

Palancar is the most well known for a good reason, it is pretty incredible but the area gets so much traffic that the reef is a little more abused than some other less known spots.

Have you been before?

Oh nice, i've only been to the area once, but the diving was pretty phenomenal. We dove through papa hog's dive charters and they were great, but again it was my first time so there could be better operations, who knows.

As far as dive sites, one of my favorites was a wall called yucab, there was about a 3knot current along the wall if I remember correctly and massive parrotfish, triggers, angelfish, some of the biggest I have ever seen. The current gave the effect that you were flying along this reef with the rest of the fish and it is still one of my favorite daves to this day.

If the water gets too rough and you're not feeling like taking a day off you can hop on the ferry over to playa del carmen and get a cab ride to akumal where the water is usually a little calmer, and there are turtles and rays fucking everywhere.

Cozumel is such a sick island too aside from the diving. It has become alot more touristy as a result of the cruise ship ports but you can still find alot of seclued parts of the town as well as good local food and bars.

Really hope to get back there at some point, pretty amazing place.
