Scratched GoPro Lens

Hey guys,

Recently I let my friend borrow my GoPro because he wanted to do some filming and what not. He plugged the GoPro into his laptop forgot it was plugged in got up and started walking pulling the GoPro right off the table and onto the concrete floor. There are five small scratches on the center of the lens, although they are not really to noticeable(look like small smugges) they get in the way of the image and become more noticeable during good lighting. Is there anyways that I could fix this myself? Have any of you tried to fix a scratched lens? Just looking to see what works and what doesn't. According to GoPro I would have to replace the entire camera. Apparently they can not just replace the lens, which is beat.

No, they cannot replace the lens by itself like you said, and as far as we know, there's no easy, cheap way to fixing a scratched lens.

though a google search will yield hundreds of crazy wackjob theories for doing it; couldn't hurt to try?

this. the best way is to have a card reader and so this situation will not happen. feel sorry for you bro. when you will find a solution, post it there so others can see what you did.

You mean: "According to GoPro my friend would have to replace the entire camera".

Don't get screwed man, it's your buddy's bad.

I don't think there's any way to replace or fix a lens. You're probably going to have to have him get you a new one.

truth. if he doesn't offer to pay for it without you having to ask, he's a dick.
i have a scratched lens too, shit sucks

thats sucks. i know all my buddies leave the camera in that waterproof case at all times.
but yeah, hopefully you find a fix

you have to take it out of the case to charge it and get the card out. this is when the scratches happen.

if the scratches arnt to deep you can take it to a camera or jewelry store and the can buff thw scratch out of the glass. Its worth a shot thats what ive been told. I also have a small scratch on the inside cause i dropped it when taking it out of the case, but it doesnt appear in the picture so i'm lucky.

the OP has a scratched camera lens, this kit is just for the case lens, not the actual camera lens. GoPro should really stop calling it a lens replacement, because it's not replacing the lens at all.

If you think your only option is to get a new camera, you could try and look into replacing the lens.
A couple of searches on Google turns up a mention that the lens has a standard M12 thread (commonly used for CCTV cameras). However, it also requires an IR coating. The links I found: http://vimeo.com/14108070 and http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1322487
The modifications are at your own risk, and you'll have to find more information on how to remove the lens from the camera. I'm guessing it is bonded in there pretty well, so only consider going down this road if you'd be scrapping the camera. I doubt you will be able to match the quality of just buying (/having your friend buy you) a new camera.

figured it out everyone!

its 100 bucks comes with everything you need including the filter, the installition is pretty simple but you do need a heat gun to loosen up the factory glue. im gonna go for it bc i have not too much to loose on a free cam. ill let you guys know how it goes.

good luck peeps
