scarcity is real. every single thing on this planet is a theoretically a scarce resource.There is only so much land, so much water ect. while you show a pic of a pile of bagels being thrown away and a starving Ethiopian child, the fact is bagels are a scarce resource in ethiopia which is exactly why he is starving. Now find a way to fly moldy bagels 4000 miles across the ocean and then make enough money to justify it and your point will then be validated. scarcity is also a relative term to geographical and economic location.
 
basically this. The world economy does not operate on some kind of magical, efficient distribution network.
 
Sure, the world may seem totally intertwined, but it's not that simple when you consider every type of connection.

Sure we are connected enough to receive a photograph or a story from Ethiopia, a cloud from the middle of the Pacific ocean, or a plane full of passengers from Europe. However, it's near impossible for our connections to transfer enough food to feed an entire country, bring the Eiffel Tower to NYC, or bring all of the sand from the Sahara desert to my back yard. Of course, it would be possible to take the Eiffel Tower apart and ship it, or send the Sahara to me boat by boat, but those tasks would be costly and impractical, and the same applies to feeding Ethiopians with our bagels.

I may have gone wayyyy overboard with these analogies, but I'm trying to make a point.
