Say you have about 5000 to buy a car...

They run around $2.99, but $.99 on Wednesdays.

thanks for all the replys

the only specific things Im really looking for is it does alright in snow, does ok on gas, is fun to drive and just in general be a dope first car that I can drive to work and haul my friends around in.

anyone know how GTIs do in snow? I found one on craigslist I might go look at

if you can get some snow tires, it'll do fine in the snow.

A dope car is subjective. For me, I'd pick up a Mk I or a MkII GTI, i've always loved old VWs. But i'm partial to VAG cars and know my way around them.

At the end of the day, i'd go drive a few of everything. Don't exactly buy the first thing you see and find what makes you happy to drive, then you'll know what dope ride to get.

my 96' 850 has 250k on it and still running like a boss. Volvo's are a really hard "first" whip to beat. They'll last forever. I still get 32 mpg out of a car that's 16 years old and the late 850 models come with 8 re-branded alpine speakers, a factory amp pre-instaled, leather, sunroof, power mirrors and if you're lucky a turbo for under 5,000 easy. Its not a subi, but put snow tires on and you'll rarely slide out, let alone get stuck. I've enjoyed mine.

first of all subies aren't even in the same leage as an old toyota for how long they last. Subarus are no better than any other car.

Yes the first generation tacos and older toyota pickups are legendary because they will just never die. However I would still much rather have that truck I posted. It's a fucking beast.

I have had my '99 Outback Sport for two years. I bought it for $5k and it has 162,000 miles on it now. The clutch is toast and it seems like no matter how much work I have done on it there's always something new fucked up with it. Don't get me wrong, the thing rallies super hard in the snow, which is bad ass, but if you're going to get one make sure the mileage isn't too high. Just my experience.
