What do you guys think about mods deleting threads and banning people because the threads/posts are "meaningless".

The most current example is the Brett_Fisher threads. I personally think they are funny and shouldn't be deleted.

DingoSean made the case that they are pointless and should be removed and people should be banned simply because they have no point. (I'm on mobile so this might look shitty).

Discuss.

If we get several requests for a thread to be removed, we will do so. This goes for threads that are becoming a shitshow, and not in the typical NS fashion. If they're over done in sexist ways, or attacking someone it's gone.

Besides, if a small 1-5 day ban from an online forum is the biggest of your worries, I feel bad for you. If you ever feel you banned unjustly, email nsmods@gmail.com

It's simple, don't be a dick and your thread will stay.

Just out of curiosity what are the steps taken by mods if one does email nsmods@gmail.com? If it's super secret then I apologize for asking.

It's a good discussion, just don't over do it jah feel?

No nr if I were a mod any form of retaliation would be immediately stamped out in a fit of fury because my life is deleting threads that make others laugh and laughter is a product of the devil

The mods discuss it, and it goes from there. Based on the member's past history different things can happen. J.D. and some of the older mods know more about how that works.

Also I'm not saying that all stupid threads should be kept but dingosean said "I don't know what they're about, but they are over. Done. No more.

If they continue to happen, bans will result".

The point I'm trying to get across is that small jokes and threads and trolling should be fine but like you said if it gets ridiculous then maybe consider removing. Sorry just ranting.

totally valid point dude. You're doing it in a good way too, NSG is what it is, but sometimes it's too much.

If you don't like the way NSG is ran you should do one or more of the following:

A) leave

B) start your own website

C) suck it up

D) stop starting shitty threads

E) realize a privately owned website can do whatever they like

Or say what you think to show mods how the members of the site feel.

I'm ok with shitty thread deletion, but the whole "I don't get this joke so I'm going to delete it" philosophy is bullshit

I don't really care one way or another, but if I have to lean one direction, it would be to leave all the shitty threads-- if they're that shitty, they'll quickly drop off the front page and become irrelevant anyway.

Some shitty threads have turned into epic threads, though-- you never know what direction they're going to take and some of them are great.

Example: a thread was made that simply stated Angelina jolie had big lips. The thread quickly turned into spiderman memes...all spiderman memes, and ended up being a great thread.

it's like a bad inside joke.

that's exactly what it is. it's an inside joke, that is being spilled into other threads.

imagine nsg is a dirty old public transit bus with a ton of people on board. These jokes are like the equivalent of one person hopping on that bus, shouting Bret Fisher, and then getting all upset with no one else gets it. And then as punishment, the bus driver comes over and stomps you out.

I don't think every reference to it should be deleted. But throwing it into any unrelated thread should be

I don't think the bus driver would be the ass kicker in your analogy, but the passengers would be. But in this case the passengers are more curious about being part of an inside joke to the point of making it unbearable for those who don't give a shit. That's why threads are being deleted.

We tried this and NSG went to utter shit, so we're not doing this anymore. They don't drop off the front page, or if they do, they're just replaced by more garbage.

The spiderman meme thread came up while we were discussing this. Basically the place we got to was, for every thread like that that actually works and ends up being funny, there are fifty that are just crap. Not to mention, kids who think they're funny immediately try to turn EVERY thread into the funny meme thread by de-railing it as soon as possible.

The potential for one or two funny meme threads is not worth NSG being overrun with that garbage.

So the debate becomes... what is meaningless? We're on the Internet for Christs sake. Do any of the threads in nsg merit 'meaning'? Is a thread pointless because it is not deep and philosophical and promotes discussion? Where do you draw the line between funny and meaningless? Does humor itself grant a thread meaning?

You could even argue that some of NSG's biggest threads like "Post your latest purchase" and "What's on your mind" are meaningless. Me knowing what you most recently bought does not affect me in any way shape or form, but it's still a good thread. Meaningless threads aren't always not worthy of being a thread.

Haha "post your latest purchase" is a pretty obvious thread with a point, which is to show off your new swag.

Yeah there's an element of subjectivity to it. No getting around that. But we'll leave up most stuff if there's some actual basis for discussion.

Nothing can be perfect but everything should come in moderation. In the end the mods will do what they think is right. Trolling, funny posts, inside jokes and being able to talk to just about everyone in the "newschool" skiing community adds something to this site more than just edits and trying to sell shit.

The interesting meta perspective on this issue is that since we've enacted the new rules - and super strict moderation of 'bullshit' - There has been a significant uptick in the usage of forums.

We have more members logging in and contributing than we've seen in a long time.

The data suggests that basically there was a couple of 'fucksticks' that really enjoyed being asshats and posting absolutely irrelevant horeshit... and then complaining when someone might have taken that away.

However in the background there are droves of people hiding from posting who are just waiting for this stupidity to be smashed out.

I mean I'll keep watching the data, but so far it isn't looking good for the total bullshit thread side of this argument.

All forums or just NSG?
