Save My Friend

So my friend is persistent on joining some branch of the military after he graduates high school because he says he wants to see the world and gain experience. As I love my friend and dont want him to die, I'm trying to find other options he may have to do these same things. He likes snowmobiling and doing outdoors thangs. So if anyone has any ideas of how to persuade my frand to not join the military, please help. I love you all. Tehe.

Joining the military doesn't always mean hes going into combat. He could be one of the dudes that works on tanks and stuff.

My brother and his best friend are joining the military after they graduate, and my advice is just to let your friend go. With things winding down and with massive cuts in the Marine Corps and various Army sub-branches your friend will be hard pressed to see active duty. And it is a good experience that will help you travel and learn more about various cultures. Overall its a very good experience in my opinion and the odds of him being seriously injured are slim, but they are still there. Just make sure your friend is happy.

He will see a hell of a lot more of the world and gain a hell of a lot more experience if he simply buys a plain ticket to Botswana and goes amazing race style around the world with like a thousand dollars.

tell him to do a study abroad.. you can do a exchange year with AFS and you'll just do a "5th year of hs" its basically a "don't give a shit and go live in another country year" or he can go to college and do a real study abroad program.. but then you actually have to learn. i did i a study abroad with AFS 6 years ago (maybe things have changed since then.. i don't know) and it was the chillest year ever... i went to Switzerland and got to ski in amazing places and got to drink heavily and party and have fun long before i was legally allowed to in the states and I made amazing friends and saw another part of the world. all without having to risk my life. good stuff!

1. drug smuggler - he can travel all over...brazil, columbia, mexico. then when he almost gets caught he can travel from country to country while running.

2. become a pirate - not going to lie, jack sparrow has a sweet life

3. photographer/videographer - added benefit, he still gets to shoot stuff

4. kill bear grylls and wear his skin and take over his show - depending on your size this may or may not work.

5. just watch the travel channel from your couch while taking drugs - less stressful and much less risky, unless you overdose in which case you didn't get this idea from me

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but I feel like he's doing it for the wrong reasons; he just doesnt really know exactly what he wants to do so he's choosing this. So my main problem with this decision is that he's unnecessarily moving towards this, which does inevitably contain some risk no matter how big or small.

Joining the military is a really good thing for most people. My dad was an officer in the air force for 23 years, got to see a lot of the world never got deployed worked really cool jobs in space and missles within the air force. If that's what your friend wants don't try and stop him. If he joins the marines, yeah he will be deployed. But I mean if he joins the airforce he will be stateside most likely. Let him make his own decisions. Oh and I love my dad and super proud he served his country for so long but I would never join the armed forces in a million years, I moved around 9 times growing up al were cross country moves, So I just don't ever want to do that again, it was fun and I have seen a lot of things and got to go overseas and travel the world but still It's just not right for me.

*really good thing for most people who make the choice to join the armed forces... Not a good choice for most people just some hahha

i watched it. there was some thought provoking debate, but the agenda of the producers shone through strongly. i figured that kind of movie would be right up the OP's alley. i don't know if it would strengthen or diminish his friends resolve to join. what happens in the movie is something worth thinking about though as someone making this decision regarding school or military.

Peace Corp? you still get to go around the world and help people out, but just do it in a better fashion. Im not a fan of war so thats why I will be doing this option some day. Maybe if I hit bank early and retire at age 45 ill do it.

hell yeah! im currently doing a year in germany (also with afs!) and its the tits. i definitely prefer travelling the world in a manner where i can peaceably interact and learn from the natives, while continuing to do the things i love.

also, peace core is a great alternative. im considering joining after college but imma cross that bridge when i come to it.

Yeah man, you go show them ____ fucks who keep stepping the line and kill those bitches without remorse because you're such a badass, yeeeeeah!
