i got sats in a week. i scored 1410 on the psat which sucks so im trying to study as much as i can but i dont really know how to.

Just wondering how you did, how much you studied, and how you studied.

a lot of people dont realize this, but if you leave a question blank you do NOT get minus points, you get 0 points. so if you have no clue, leave it blank instead of guessing. I got a 1740 on the PSAT and i hope to do a little better on saturday

i got a 1790 on mine, i guess thats alright, i dont really know. Here in michigan/midwest pretty much every school uses the ACT so my SATs didnt really matter for anything.

i didnt study b/c it really wouldn't have helped me much. i think i had a 1890 on the sat and a 28 on the act. colleges look at these a lot less if you have a solid gpa and took hard classes and scored well in them. ive been accepted to every school i applied to so far.

First, heres how the scoring works:

Blank: 0 points added

Wrong Answer: 1/4 point subtracted

Correct Answer: 1 point added

So, does this mean you should leave some blank? For most people, probably. I wouldnt even attempt to do some of the harder problems on the test (the 16-20's, end of section stuff), but instead concentrate on the ones I do know and make sure I get them all right.

Second, the thing that will help you most on the test is knowing the vocabulary. However, theres no real hope of you learning it all between now and Saturday, you should have started practicing two months ago to really know the words and definitions. Best hints I can give you overall would be to pace yourself and dont feel like you have to answer every question. Focus on eliminating answers. SAT answers (especially in reading/writing sections) are terrible: for the most part, you have to chose the answer thats 'least wrong'. Crossing off the obviously wrong answers will help narrow your search.

Good luck!

actaully pretty much everyone knows that. if you've ever taken a PSAT or SAT class its the first thing they tell you. its also printed on the front of the goddamn book.

I think there is a book from collegeboard.com that they send out for free with practice tests to help you study. One of my teachers told be about a girl who only studied from that book, and got a perfect score.

Just don't let yourself get to nervous. Relax, get a good nights sleep and all that.

I shouldn't even be giving SAT advice, I didn't take mine.

Hello Junior College. :)

go to bed early on thursdaynight and friday night and eat a good breakfast and make sure your up and feelin good. i got 2050.

and collegeboard has some tests i did a couple of them online but didnt really helpm uch

yeah we had a 2380, a few around 2350 or 2340....makes me feel retarded cause all my friends are like 1800+ on their psat. I go to a prep school by the way

thanks for everyones advice

wait what the hell is goin on r u kids bein serious...when i took it in high school the highest score u could get was 1600, at least thats what i thought. Did they change the format of the test? whats the new highest score possible?

Learn some of the vocab words -- it helps a bunch... my score went from a 1200 to a 1320 on old grading scale.

two kids in my grade got 2400s.

I didn't study, just went in and took it unprepared. I think the fact that i have a really good vocabulary from reading a lot helped me out a ton since i got 790 on the reading. 2010 combined, i think.

i took a class like 2 months before hand...the class wasnt really that good but it came with a study book and the book really helped i got a 2120 with a 790 on the math section, the math problems are very similar to the practice ones, so with a little studying its easy to do well

no they added a "writing" section (essay included)

the essay is worth i think 100 -200 points for the writing section

Ok, heres the deal. ETS (Educational testing services) grades your essay. They do massive gradings at a time. If you work for them, you have to be able to grade 200 essays in 4 hours. Thus, your essay gets about 1 minute.

They scale it on a 0-6 score. Everybody usually gets a 3 or 4, as long as you write in english. They grade it twice, add the combined score (Say I get a 4 and a 5, totals 9) and then multiply your grammar score by this number. If you get two 6's on the essay and a perfect grammar score, you get a 800.

So, is the essay worth a lot? Yes. Its the easiest thing to improve your score. But it's relatively useless if your grammar sucks. A mediocre score on each is better than perfection on one and bombing it on the other.

yaa, i studied quite a bit, then got a tutor for the math part for a few weeks. got 1850 the first time, 1980 the second. 1370 on the main parts, which is pretty legit. just be glad when your done. its a long test

you're right, i looked it up and i got 740 on that section. Still a 2010 combined though.

I got 2180 total my second try (800 math, 740 reading, 640 writing) I didn't take any prep courses or study, I just ate breakfast and got a good sleep the night before. One of my friends beat me with 2310 though (all 800s except a 710 in math)
