Sailing Internationally

I've sailed my whole life since I was about 5 and am sailing in Europe which will be my first international regatta. There are no other international sailors just people from the country. Has anyone ever done anything like this? Wondering what the vibe is like? Whether they are open to foreigners or not? Just wondering what I should be expecting.

This is what sailing in europe is like. Im sure youll have fun

Yes indeed. Cool stuff to sail against new competition and people you have never met before. What class and where are you racing?

International 420 and in Ireland

Good for you. That should be pretty damn sweet. As always just chat with everyone possible. Sailors are always a sweet group to hang out with no matter what nationality. Plus local knowledge of tides and current is always key (Screw sailing in Charleston, SC).

Also, since you are sailing in Ireland this video is certainly relevant.

That video was hilarious. Sailing needs commentators like that to keep things more entertaining. What type of boat do you sail?

I have sailed it all. I worked at a boat yard all through college. So anything from a laser radial to a Saber 426. Typically I tried to stay racing on 20-30 foot keel boats. Last few years I have teamed up with a guy to race his J70 all over the place. Since moving to Pittsburgh my sailing has certainly dropped. This city has great sports, food, and cheap living. However, the sailing is not a possibility. Which sucks.

I used to race the great lakes on a Laser 28. What a great boat. Miss that thing. I was supposed to be heading to Charleston for the Race Week in a week or two but my toe surgery last week shot that down for this year.

Sailed my whole life as well. Repped canada at North Americans in laser a few times but never qualified to get off the continent and cant afford to enter open worlds just to get squashed- so good for you op, thats actually sick, assuming you are USA or i'd probably know you or of you.(if canada RNSYS rep lol)

I have alot of friends that have been to worlds and two of my coaches that i'm pretty tight with have gone to the olympics in radial- from what i hear its pretty fucking awesome and the vibes are really good off the water- on the water its obviously probably going to be alot more agressive than you are used to, and apparently mark roundings are hilarious because of all the different accents screaming at once.

Also in that video my former team mate/coach wins the pin- pretty awesome.

This. Multi-language mark rounding are the best! Usually it is the folks from the UK that just spatter all sorts of stuff that you can not understand.

I was racing J22s once at one of the Great Lakes Championships and my skipper this time go into a little debate of room at the mark. Well it ended up with some name calling and finally my skip telling the other boat that he will protest because the other boat "hurt his feelings." Ha I love this sport and the weird folks who do it.
