Sachtler Ace?

I'm looking at tripods under 550$, and one that I'm looking at is the Sachtler Ace, has anyone owned one?

Or does anyone have any other sub 550$ options?

Thanks!

I have talked to some people that own it on here. Everyone seems to like it. They say that there are some minor setbacks, but it will beat manfrotto tripods in that price range.

Im on a 701/055 set up right now. Next time I upgrade, I will most likely go for the FSB-4 with stock legs, or if I have some cash to spend, I might get the miller stage-2 legs that everyone loves. I havent really seen the point in upgrading to the ACE, then having to upgrade again.

The CF ones are definitely worth the extra dough. Especially if you plan on putting an anvil of a head on there (Sachtler).

Is that what you have? Looking at the FSB-4 package, it seems like the legs are just thrown in there. You can get them for like 100 bucks more than just the head. Are they trash or what?

I wouldn't call them trash, but they definitely leave more to be desired. Think of it this way, you're paying $X for the head, and the legs are only an afterthought. Obviously they aren't going to be very good.

I use the 2-stage Solo DV CF legs with my Cine DSLR head, and I can't possibly imagine using aluminum legs. The CF legs alone are insanely light (I thought the box was empty when it arrived at my doorstep), but once you feel how heavy Sachtler heads are you're going to shudder at the thought of adding more weight. I actually redesigned my entire kit (skis, outerwear, boots, touring bindings, camera, legs, etc.) to compensate for my tripod head.

^Gotcha. Thanks for the input. I figure my budget is around 1k, so i either gotta find stuff used, or settle with the FSB-4 package. I figure it will all be light years ahead of what I have now.

FYI, any legs thrown in at that price are going to be bulky and add even more weight to the setup.

Like landis said, CF sticks are amazing, and the settler heads are bulky. All metal build will do that. You're going to want to shave as much weight as you can, even if you don't think it's an issue. I have the gitzo equivalent of the miller solo CF, and they are absolutely phenomenal (landis may say otherwise, but having used them a ton, i've found nothing he said about them to be anywhere near an issue, if even present in mine). They weigh next to nothing, and are small enough for me to ACTUALLY get them on the hill (2:2:1 stage legs were a nightmare, lets say that)

I think shooting on my tripod is my favorite thing to do. It's so unbelievably smooth and will last much longer than any camera. Stoked I invested in it, because it's paying off bigtime!

Right now its stretching my budget to get the ace, So i don`t see that being within my price bracket.

I may just nut up and order it tonight.
