Anyone own a Saab? I'm looking to purchase an 89-91 900S and would love some input on this make! Please don't tell me not to buy one either as I have to so.... Repairs, fuel consumption, etc. would all be great please!

well, Turbo is my current problem. It will cost like twice as much for insurance with the Turbo and I'm currently driving an old Jeep so no matter what the car is gonna seem fast, however, I'm buying a stick and want the car to feel sporty so..... How much of a difference is it with the Turbo?

oh man, i piss my pants everytime i see a Saab..I absolutely love them

if ur buying an older model, be careful because the way the body was designed water collects inside the body and it'll corrode over time, just to let you know. If you get a manual, it costs a grand to change the clutch, and if you have a turbo, you have to do some maintenece (draining turbo lines or something) every once and awhile, and that isnt so cheap either. Im thinking of getting rid of my Jeep and getting a 96-99 Saab 9-3 SE Turbo. They cost money and they arent cheap to fix, but i dont care, its a Saab and i need one.

When you get ur Saab post pictures i wanna see it

dude I'm the same way! I fuckin go buggy for Saabs! Thanks for the pointers, I like the older ones better than the new ones! I actually got to test drive the 2002 models in Toronto for the Saab appreciation day, knew a guy who owned on so I drove the new 9-3, 9-5 and the Aero Wagon, infuckincredible, 5-speeds, even the wagon was amazing, drove the piss out of them, totally grand experience! Never got to drive the Viggen 9-3 conver. though, it was all booked up!

I've had a '99 Saab 9-5 SE (turbo) for over a year and its an awesome car. Its not as quick off the line as you might think (cuse of turbo lag), but its got plenty of power throughout and falls in nice at highway speeds (80-90 mph). It also has a sport feature that holds gears longer (its an auto) and makes it real quick. The handling is pretty loose which sucks, but its got a soft ride and they are really luxurious interiors.

As for maintenance, mine has like 68,000 miles (which is a whole lot for being 3-4 years old), and there haven't been many problems. The biggest problem was Teh engine lining came loose and it kept leaking oil and shit which involved completely removing the engine to fix and cost almost a grand. Also a broken fuel pump so not that bad for such a heavy mileage car.

You have to be careful when buying a used turbo car. People tend to beat on them and turbocharged engines are under a lot more stress then a normally aspirated engine becuase of the extra pressure it is seeing on a consistent basis(boost). These two combined facts make a car that has more likelihood to be a bad used car with more repairs. However if the car has had consistant oil change intervals of around 2k-3k and is not going through any oil, those cars can be fast actually and there is no reason they shouldn't last as long as an NA car. The engines are pretty strong in my opinion also. I have a friend with an '89 and about 150-200k miles on it pushing 14-15lbs of boost and you would be very suprised at the cars he is passing up on the road.

yeah, i have 170,000 miles and it still goes quicki. in my opinion. i can't drive...but when i tell daddy to go fast it accelerates quickly.

hahah subarus are ugly man

I test drove a 9-3 once..i loved it so much i didnt want to give it back to the dealer, haha it was sooooOOO! sweet, hah.

If i bought a 9-3 SE without the turbo, can i buy a turbo kit and add it on? someone was saying that turbo engines go through more stress so maybe i could get one w/o turbo so it didnt have as much stress on it then get turbo put on it..would that work

why would you want to get an older saab. they are soo much money to fix and yeah if your getting a car that old dont go turbo... it will just be more problems and more money for a part that is prob too old, unless it is recently replaced..

Suburu's these days are built like shit, obviously not the one above though. Question: Do Saabs still have machine guns behind the headlights?

nipe- I dunno if I would go with that option. Like I said I have a reasonably new Saab turbo with 68k and its still running with relatively little problems, so if you take care of it I wouldnt anticipate a lot of turbo caused problems. Also if you were to alter the car (like adding a turbo) it would likely void the warranty on the car completely. Plus i think turbo kits are more expensive especially when you have to consider installation and all that then just buying a car w/ a turbo would be.

the reason they wear on the engine more is because they are compressing the air goign through the engine to provide more boost meaning the engine is dealing with more force and torque so it is working harder than a naturally aspirated. The same thing would happen w/ a manufactureres turbo or one you installed. Id say if you want a turbo just buy a saab turbo, just my opinion though.

yeah, you can add a turbo to any car really. but you're looking to spend easily over $2000. turbo's are REAL pricy. and how can you honestly say a fricking SAAB is better looking than a scooby?!? i just don't see why people like saabs, they might drive good (although not as good as a suby), but, as i said, they look like assholes turned inside out.

g-dubs is right, its gonna be way more expensive to put in an aftermarket turbo kit... everyone i know with an older saab has had problems with it....plus they look like ass....but if thats what you want then what the hell do i care

...

to get a turbo means you will get twice the out-put i recommend getting the one with the turbo option then get a new chip to make the turbo more efficent.they are usually about 400-500 but adds about 40 hp an lots of torque. if you chose to go after market would get massive hp gains. but you also have to do somethings to the car.. complete new exhaust, intake (which you would do in either case)

ive got a '96 900 SE (turbo), its only got 45,000 miles. The only problems ive had are with the direct ignition cassette, i'm not sure if the '90 would have it. But its a weak point in the car, they crap out now and then but besides that its a great car and definatly looks better than a subaru but what really matters is how much of a higher qaulity car it is than a subaru. get the turbo

yes....higher quality....sure...except your little ignition cassette little thingy that BROKE. that, and it looks like shit. other than sucking, sure it's better. NOT

Just bought a 91 900S, non-turbo. It's silver with dark blue leather. Should be getting it on the road Monday. Then road tripping begins! Woohoo

I just watched the episode of Seinfeld where he goes to the Saab dealership to buy a car. It's a great episode. Kramer and the dealership guy go crazy and drive the car until it runs out of fuel. Also, George makes a candy-bar line up and trys to set up the mechanic... or was it the manager, well he didn't know either.

I know of most of the old cars problems, like sinking headliner, ball/cv joints, faded bumpers, cracked dashs. They never burn oil. The automatics are shite supposedly, the turbo really lags. Check out the Saabnet. Any questions ask me....might be able to help.... Just got mine on Fri. drove like a bastard all weekend....Too much fun man, too much!
