Ruptured my spleen...

So here's my story. Also looking for feedback, opinions, experiences, etc.

Last week I was out with my buddy enjoying what felt like to be the first of spring riding conditions. Naturally what this meant was that because of the lack of powder, more time would be spent in the park.

So we hit up the park and things were going great until I decide I want to try a 720 off this one Large jump. So I go for it, and realize mid air that I don't have enough speed to clear it, but not having much of an option at this point I keep my rotation on lock in hopes to at least land 7 to case and ride away...big mistake.

My skis came in contact with the ground at 630° at which point the rest of my body slammed into the knuckle of the jump, consequently rupturing my spleen. Feeling like shit but not knowing the extent of the damage I had done to myself, I kept skiing in hopes of the pain to go away. After a few more laps through the park and no sign of improvement, we decided to call it.

At first i thought i may have broken a rib or just bruised some internal organ, but after almost passing out on the drive home, we decided to hitup the ER. 3hrs of waiting later and almost passing out another few times, they determined i had lost about 2 litres of blood through internal bleeding. They rushed me off for major surgery and here I am now 1 week later, done for the season and with a gnarly scar on my chest.

So has anyone ever injured or ruptured their spleen? How would you say it affects you today? and is there anything you think I should know? Any feedback, opinions and experiences are welcome! I could also post a pic of the scar for you guys to see if you want haha.

im pretty sure your immune system wont be as good. but other than that i dont know much more... rest up man.

well, I'm sure you noticed the pain, but stuff like is a clear sign of internal bleeding, you probably should have alerted someone earlier haha instead of waiting.

A friend of mine blew his spleen up at whis this season and got called in dead while I was riding in the ambulance with him. Was comatose for the night, paralyzed, on a ventilator, had literally more than 15 IVs in him, machines pumping blood in his legs.... He woke up the next morning, moved to a children's ward in 2 days, and was out of the hospital in 6 days.

You'll be fine man, make sure you get vaccinations and see a doctor IMMEDIATELY when you get sick. The spleen handles a few particular viruses that can really fuck you if you don't take care of them fast. Whenever you get sick, go see a doctor and tell them you had your spleen removed, they'll take it more seriously and are more likely to give you antibiotics, and more powerful ones at that.

If you haven't been told about those particular few sicknesses that are especially dangerous for patients without a spleen, TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR. This is crucial information that could potentially mean life or death for you in the future. You can get vaccinated though, make sure you get that done!

Vibes man, hope you're feeling well.

My friend did this last year in his backyard when nobody was home, he had to wait like an hour before his parents came home and found him there

Yea I know I should have but I can be stubborn like that haha. Didn't want to write off the day until I was sure something was wrong...silly me.

A similar thing happened to my cousin. He was skateboarding down a fairly large hill and his front wheels hit sand essentially rocketing him forward with the board under him as he flew like and eagle, he landed on the truck off his board and went home. He had pain, but didn't go to the hospital for three days, at which point he discovered he had a ruptured spleen.

Thanks for the feedback man, and glad to hear your friend's ok. Coincidentally, mine happened on blackcomb. My doctor did tell me about those sicknesses, and I'll be going for my shots next week. I'll definitely be taking my health more seriously.

Here's a pic of the damage, staples still in.

+vibes dude. My buddy lacerated his kidney this year while skiing. He wasn't even going to go to the hospital until he realized he was pissing blood.

And I just shattered my patella last friday (5/6) so I really feel for you dude, good luck with your recovery

Snap! I did the same thing a couple of years ago.

Crashed, knew I hadnt broken anything so carried on skiing, realised it was bad, sat in a waiting room for 3 hours, saw a doctor, he started panicing, helicoptor to another country, life support machine, 10 days in hospital, no more spleen!

All healed up well, got a bad-ass scar to show the girls, not affected my skiing, only thing i have to do is once a year queue up with the old grannies and get a flu jab.

Could be a whole lot worse my friend! But like someone else said, just dont get lazy with it and take it for granted and forget about it. If you get ill tell the doc you got no spleen!

Here's to still being alive!

Crazy! Cool to hear that it hasn't affected your skiing. That was my

biggest worry at first lol. I guess it still hasn't hit me how much

worse it could have been, but I definitely wont be slacking off. My doc discharged me 3 days post surgery and everything seems to be healing up fine. Thanks for the advice and feedback!
