Rugby

you bumped a thread from last spring to call me a liar...i'm sorry i haven't been playing uni level rugby in fucking england, i'm sorry i've been playing on city and school teams where it's hard (sometimes impossible) to even find enough people for subs (example, on my hs team i often subbed for flyhalf as well as playing wing). i learned to play every position throughout my years on the field and whether or not i am well built for any one of them doesn't mean i do not know the plays or the basics of them.

by the way you're a douchebag.

wow. i just bumped OhMyBosh to 10/10. im amazed. im South African. needless to say, rugby for me is religion. i play wing 90 percent of the time but i know my way around every bit of the pitch.

To be fair, I know people that have played all over. Some people are naturally tall, muscular and fast, and suit most positions. Other people change over time. Some people put on weight, others lose wieght, some get taller, etc, and their position requirements change. No big

yeah especially when i haven't had the chance to play above an 18 year old level yet, i started playing touch when i was 6 and contact when i was 8 and i certainly didn't have the body i have now 10 or 12 years ago.

You always hear about rugby players being "tougher" than football players, are there rugby guys who get into the NFL to make big bucks like soccer players?

either way please don't play hooker again, it's a very specialist position and to be honest the referee shouldn't be letting you play there unless your primary position is in the front row. just go to uncontested scrums.

I play, great sport

Play for Chobham RFC and salesians school, I play blindside flanker

Ive been on tour and playing in Scotland and Ireland

yeah i messed up my neck playing 2nd row with a guy who was too much taller than me, that equaled my first trip to a chiropractor. death isn't an issue for me though.

They dont have the same skill sets as NFL players... and they have a different makeup.

Football players are probably faster and stronger than rugby players in the sense that they are all built to last 1 play at a time and do a very specific thing, whereas rugby players need lots of endurance and a wider range of skills.

The O-line in football for example barely needs to move, they just need the biggest guys they can find to block people... whereas the biggest guys in rugby still need to run around all over the pitch for 80 minutes, so you cant really just go and find some guy whos 6'10" and weight 380 pounds to play hooker or whatever...

Same goes for the backs... whilst WRs are probably faster than most backs, they are probably not capable of making tackles or rucking or whatever...

Its just a different sport, you cant really compare the 2 simply because they both involve contact.

post world cup drop goal Jonny Wilkinson was apparently offered a few spots as a kicker on NFL teams but turned them down. but that's a very rare case.

i payed a hooker in college....

rugby is a fucking awesome game, so much team spirit and stuff... i have been to rugby, england to the playing fields it was invented on! /claim!!!!

its good to hear that more americans and canadians are getting into it - everybody else like nz australia, france italy, england ireland scotland much of africa, all love it!
get on it chaps!

Yeah. I have to imagine that Rugby kickers would make very good NFL kickers... but being a kicker in the NFL would be a slap in the face to them, because its the most bullshit position behind Punter and/or Long Snapper... they'd much rather play a legit position in rugby and utilize all their skills rather than just being the douche who comes on to make kicks.

I play inside or outside center, wing occasionally. We haven't really had solid positions yet.
We're going on tour to the UK this spring break though, should be a gong show!

As someone who plays both sports, I have agree there is a definite difference between the players. On average rugby players are like 6 ft maybe 180 lbs if they're larger. They're built more like a runner than someone who plays a contact sport. Kid's on my football team are massive, average weight for our O-line is like 285 lbs..and we're a highschool team. I for one know I have shitty hands, I broke both of my hands at different points playing sports and they healed incorrectly leaving me with less dexterity in my hands than I'd like. I basically just hit them hard enough to pop the ball out, then our team'll get it.

>play inside or outside center, wing...

>haven't really had solid positions yet

>going on tour to the UK this spring break though

You're going to get raped.

Oh trust me, we know.Half our team is people who actually want to play; the other half just plays because they're pretend jocks and barely show up to any practices.
We're going to be playing a game on the very field Rugby was invented on (apparently, don't quote me on it) I forgot the name but its a legendary field according to our coach who's a rugby nut. We were gonna be in Dublin for St. Patty's day but we decided to go see a six flags game instead.
Like I said, its going to be a shit show, in every way haha.

the fields that rugby was invented on is the playing fields at Rugby School, Rugby, England (i believe it is in Warwickshire) it was invented by a school boy named william webb ellis BOOM! a little history lesson for you,

theres a pub in the town called webb ellis or something like that, if you are old enough (18+) go and get a pint there!
i have been to rugby but never played there, my school was very good at rugby and played some sort of tournament, but i wasn't in the firsts- so i didn't play that match
the uk take rugby pretty seriously so it will be good!

If you mean you're going to be playing at Rugby... then i'll go ahead and claim that i played there. fuck yeah.

yea we used to play Rugby school, had a few friends who went there, all part of living in warwickshire. however Rugby school have recently let their rugby program slip failing to put out sides against schools such as Warwick.

yeah played them at home, i can't remember if we won or not, not that it matters seeing as that was when I was about 15....
Yeah i take my boat to draycot water when there are comps on, which is just about 10mins down the road from rubgy, so i have been around the town a couple of times to various pubs/restaurants when the wind wasn't very good...

We hosted Rugby School for a tournament we had at home, and I'm pretty sure we beat them by quite a significant margin.

*cough* two Daily Mail vases *cough*
