Rossland

Planning on taking a semester off from school and heading west. Red mountain is pretty much at the top of my list right now. Earliest I can get their is late November- early December. I spent a season in whistler and know that it is pretty much full by then and am wondering if Rossland is like that too? Thanks

small lol but awsome id hate to see it turn into a whistler or big whiter its perfect the way its is lol but ull have fun

Yo, Im planning on doing the same thing. The mountain opens Dec 5th, so Im going to drive out from Toronto late November and try to land a place. I might have room if anyone wants to drive out with me. Im looking to make some edits with my helmet cam, and if anyone has a HD cam I d be happy to film with them too! But most importantly, Im looking for some jib heads to shred with and have a good time. I ll repost in the fall, but if anyone needs a roommate or has some space next winter 09-10, let me know.

I live in rossland.

Great place to spend the winter for sure. The mountain is never busy and Rossland gets slightly busier that the summer, but it isnt "full'.

check my profile for some pics and video.

Yo, those pics look dope. I cant wait to shred somw POW POW. Do you skin the BC too?

And is the park serviced by the t bar only?

I dont do much BC stuff, only really before the hill opens or after it closes. The BC is super sick though and there are like 5 mountains connected by ridges that you are pretty much already on top of at the top of Granite.

The t-bar runs the length of the park (which is small, but we just get creative and do fun shit when the snow sucks) and takes you to a shortcut that beats everyone to the motherlode on pow days or you can ride the Red chair, which goes up red mountain and you can ski down to the park.

Ill be free to shred almost everyday after the end of janurary.

by the way, my mom's a realtor so if you guys need help finding a place to rent, just let me know and i'll give you her email.

helmet cam + red mountain = some awesome shot potential.

so the thing about Rossland is that unless you have a connection it can be hard to find a place for the winter before showing up. So just get to town and see what you can do. Every winter I hear people say "there's nothing available" and all that shit, but very rarely do I hear of someone not actually finding a place... they might just pay a bit more then normal, or live in lower Rossland (which is cool, if you're into that kind of thing).

And as Jeff mentioned, the backcountry is SICK! there's enough terrain within an hour walk from the hill (and off the highway north of the hill) to keep you occupied for years.

Thanks for the ++++ vibes. Im super stoked to come out. I still love park but cliff hucking seems even funner. As for driving out, how much time do you think I should give myself? ie, whens the best time to get a place?

your best bet is to get there in october to get a spot as of November... but then you gotta sit around for a month, which usually leads to afternoon drinking and video games...

I haven't had to actively search for a place for a while so I've been lucky. You can find a spot any time of winter if you keep trying. If you show up in December it might just mean you will spend a bit of time at the hostel before getting a place. Lifestyle Properties is a good source for places available, they deal with most of the houses/apartments for rent in town.

If you come in the beginning on november, you should have no problem finding a place to stay. Any later then that, it will take a bit more looking and maybe a bit more money.

If you're planning buying a season pass, you should look into getting it now to save a bunch of money.

yea, I always wait till november to buy my pass.... the reason why I don't have a locker... stupid Red Mountain not giving me a locker...

You're probably already too late. They give lockers to returning locker holders first, than go down the list on first come first serve basis. To get on the list you need a pass for next year - which were on sale in March. If you want a locker, buying a pass in March/April is your best bet. If you buy your pass now, you might have a chance - but if you buy your pass in the fall, you're probably S.O.L.

A locker isn't necessary, but it's a handy thing to have if you've got a quiver of skis and want to have the option of using more than one pair in a day. If you have a car you can just leave them in your car, but that just seams like a lot of work... I personally don't have car and hitching to the hill with ski gear isn't nearly as smooth as without, ya know?

So there you go... lockers 101

im very seriously considering Red this year for the pow. im from calgary and did the 07/08 winter in Fernie. student pass is only 663 at red and dont need to buy it before Oct so that makes it pretty cheap.
I need to do courses this fall so i wont be able to move out until right around christmas/newyears. is it goign to be imposible to find a place then? maybe i should be paying for the month of dec to reserve a decent place?
i would like ski as much as possible this winter so work 4 days a week max, soemthign on the mountain or outside. Has anyone been a lifty there? any job advice for me?
I'll see ya bois out this winter if everything goes to plan.

it will be easier for you to find a place to live around the holidays than it will be to find a decent job. I'm never really looking for a place to live that time a year, but I always see people coming in to town around the end of december and finding a place (even though everyone is always like "oh, there's nowhere available - that's bullshit).

but as I said, finding a job is the hard part. You can always throw your name into the hat at the hill, but there's no guarantee they will hire you, and in town the options are pretty slim, not saying it's impossible, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Not sure what their deal is for next year, but you could maybe try to contact the hill, tell them when you are planning on arriving in town and try to get a volunteer job, so you get your pass for free, which will give you a bit of extra coin and maybe allow you to not need a job? It's an option.
