Root Canals

So, I went headfirst into a something and ended up tearing my lip/nostril in half and my front teeth were facing backwards. The dentist and surgeons did really good work but I need root canals on my teeth, can anyone who has had one tell me what it's like/how painful it is?

I've had two

Not the best experience, but there would be worse

Local anaesthetic makes things much better..

To be honest, the worst part was the pain which triggered the need for root canal to be done in the first place

I think for one of them i had eaten some toast with e.g. strawberry jam and one of the seeds god stuck inbetween 2 teeth..

Anyway i thought nothing of it and ended up getting a cavity which went all the way to the nerve - having an exposed nerve which gets agitated is probably the worst thing ever.

Given that the root canals were on the back teeth, often the size of the filling is too big to last forever so ultimately I have had to get 2 crowns made..

Bottom line, thats like $3k per tooth.

I've had 5 done.

Got into a gnarly crash and knocked out 4 teeth caved in both upper and lower teeth.

They drill a hole into your canal, clean it out and fill it in with some composite...

I've had 3 oral surgeries but root canals are sooooo painful.

shit. I had something like that, but I just wasn't good enough flossing my teeth and I had a cavity go from in between my teeth and then come out the top, so you could see my cavity. I got it filled, and then one of the roots died and got infected and now my entire left jaw hurts randomly and when I eat. so now I have to get a root canal.

The worst part about it is that the nerve that goes to that part of the tooth isn't in the nerve bundle that the local anesthetic affects, so basically I will feel most everything...and I did feel everything the last time they operated on it. it was not fun.

just get them to blast you with injected anesthetic, then, when that takes effect, ask them to do it again...trust me
then take the nitrous and chill
after that the worst part is the noises and the waiting...and the shit they drill out of the inside of your tooth smells god awful and it shoots in your face...and your lips get real dry and cracked cause your mouth has to stay open for like an hour
they're not THAT bad though dude, i just cant imagine what they were like in the 1920's and shit...
get a good dentist though, i had to have one a couple years ago cause a filling fell out and got infected and the tooth died, but my dentist who did the canal left cotton and shit inside of it for some goddamn reason AND managed to miss a whole canal so it got super infected again and i had to have the whole thing redone. it was the dental equivalent of sewing a scalpel into a surgery patient. totally fucked.

ive been fortunate in the two that I've had. Both times the pulp/nerve and shit were basically dead, so I didn't really feel anything.

The first one was because a baseball to the face broke the root of a tooth.

The second was due to an abscessed tooth. That sucked ass. The worst part about that one wasn't the root canal itself which, for me, was painless. What I could have lived without is that the doc had to drill into the roof of my mouth, and also slice the outside of my gum in order to drain the infection and shit that had developed (classic abscess). Needless to say it hurt a bit when it was done, but it REALLY hurt after the anesthetic wore off. I was just moaning in pain, droolin like a damn dog waiting for my prescription, and some dumb fucking bunt took ages to ask about her prescription, consequently delaying my meds. At least he said it was a "beautiful root canal."

Overall, just bring some music, and hope they numb you up real well.

If the pain is mild or pretty much non existent, then the worst shit you should expect is the horrid drilling noises and the feeling of them scraping out your pulp, which is fine and dandy.

Ive had 2, both in my 2 front teeth. And i can tell you that the only part that hurts is when they inject the numbing stuff. You wont feel a thing afterwards. On my first one the tooth was still alive and badly infected so when they stuck the needle in it hurt like a motherfucker. And i did the exact same thing to my teeth that you did, so brace yourself.

i too went face first into a wooden post and had root canal on both my front teeth. its not as bad as it sounds but obviously still quite wack.
sometimes your teeth go darker but mine havent really

I need a root canal.

found out today and my dentist basically said they caused it by putting a filling to close to a nerve so that's a piss off. gonna be cheesed if it's not covered

For sure could be worse, but ya they're not the best. I had one a few years ago done that got infected after they did the root canal, which ended up being really shitty because they had to do reconstructive gum surgery to fix it. But ya the actual root canal isn't that bad if you just get some solid anesthetic.

Did something similar to what you described. It was December 21st last year and I was working on one of my cars. wound up taking a prybar to the mouth breaking my maxilla, separating my upper lip, broken nose, and broke my two front teeth leaving just a little tooth left and the nerves loose.

Had to go to the ER for like 6 hours or something, don't really remember. They were in my mouth poking around at the nerves so that hurt like a bitch considering I wasn't on any sort of pain medication or anesthesia.

Had to go to an oral surgeon the next day and get root canals on both broken teeth. It sucked. Anesthesia makes it better, but it still sucks. Make sure they numb you up enough because they're essentially drilling a hole in your tooth, removing the nerves, and then filling it. So it sucks.

You'll be fine though
