Rookie freeze article

did anyone else find it strange that steele spence and anthony boronoski are still being considered rookies? they were both had their own segments last year, and steele had a couple of shots in movies 2 yrs ago, and i think boronowski had a picture or two. its also strange that guys like crichton who just emerged last year didnt get mentioned.

there are plenty of pros who haven't placed well in comps. Those guys aren't rookies....i assume they threw them in because they aren't that well known yet.

anthony was in the credits of 13, if i remember correctly. hes no rookie, i just dont think hes ever progressed much.

yeah it takes a lot to be pro. you have to do more than just throw down some good movie segs. im sure if you went skiing skiing with them for a week and then with some new pros like cr and tanner you would really see the difference, not that steele and anthony dont kick ass.

 
Actually, you wouldn't see the difference because they all throw down just as hard and harder than a lot of those guys. Anthony and steele are by no means rookies in my book. A rookie would be a first year entry, but there aren't enough of those people. I think rory and I were the only ones. Some article that would be. It just happened that they picked these people and thats the way it went. Not everything has to follow these perfect 'guidelines' of who should be where and why. If thats how it was, we would be calling ourselves mogul skiers.

Exposure is exposure and we are all stoked no matter what level we are at, believe me.

And as another note, what magazine has done something that important for a group of rookies before? None that I'm aware of. Freeze truly is thinking about the future and not just thinking about it but acting on it.

what does it take to be pro then?? do you have to win the x games seven times over like Tanner and Jon? it that what you are trying to say. why don't you look at snowboarding, one of the biggest influences on our sport. the best and most influential riders don't do contests. Devun walsh, jeremy jones, peter line, terje, the list goes on... and it doesn't take a week to do a seggy, that is the biggest misconception ive ever heard. it take a whole year. and fuck, as far as i know ive never ever skied with you. so don't talk shit about my skiing. because im sure if you met me or any other pro you be liking their nuts in two seconds right after you finished dissing them on this sight.. and whoever said im not progressive, look at my profile. i think that a switch rodeo 5 in the back country is pretty fucking progessive. so you better check your mouth. all of you shit talkers

The dilly is, kids come on the internet and talk smack not expecting the person they are talking about to read it. And also, all most people know about pro skiers is what's in their segment with whatever company. There's a lot more to people than what you see in a movie.

And seriously, to put together a really good segment takes a full year, full time. So that's some bullshit if I've ever heard it.

Bottom line, people are pro skiers for a reason, because they are good.

That article was called rookie class. It was printed to show the new leaders of our sport, not necessarily new skiers. Mad props to whistler crew you work hard and deserve it.

switch rodeos were going down three years ago. i dont mean to dis, but lots of people can do switch rodeo 5s with tons of style, and they dont get the pro recognition. and i know alot of people, including myself, can only rate pros from what they see in the movies and in the magazines, becuase we dont have the chance to ski with them. all im saying is that people are throwing switch d nines, dirty cork 7s, etc, and youre throwing switch rod 5s and misty 7s. but once again, i can only judge from what i see in vids.

those 2 were plake's picks in freeskier in the october issue LAST YEAR, when they could be considered 'rookies.' freeze needs to get off their asses and go find people we don't already know all about if they're gonna have a rookie feature

im talking, and more importantly, i CARE becuase i believe that the industry and freeze should be focusing more on the true up and comers that are just now making names for themselves and progressing the sport more than anyone else has before. people like crichton, finn, hibbert for example, not pros that have been around since the beginning

Dude anthony has a good point. I have been thinking about this. The way skiing is working right now is not right. He's right look in snowboarding-skateboarding top pros are recognized for progression and not competetion standings. we are not like other athletes. We are doing this for the feeling not for a crowd. It is something far more personal. Its not about who can land more technical tricks, its who can do something new something for themselves. Once skiing is mature pros will be recognized for their true talent. Not everyone wants to compete. Companies like line and armada are what skiing needs. Rider owned = rider influenced. Free skiing is a lifestyle. You don't go out there thinking. Man I gotta go train for the Comp. New school skiing is so young right now it requires the guidelines but soon you will see we will have our industry. We will segregate away from the mainstream that major companies are pushing us toward and again we will follow our own path with rider owned companies. Being pro should be far more about making good segments than winning contests. We are already figuring this out and its great. I don;t know if anyone understands what I am saying because my points are muddled. It seems to me that those people that hate on pros are in this industry for the wrong reasons.

youd be surprised how much a magazine influences the way people view a sport. i know if i see a pro wearing a new jacket, or using a new pair of skis in an ad, then i would want to go purchase it. the whole point in magazine advertisements and articles is to make a product, person, place, etc. look good, is it not? without poorboyz, freeze, and other such companies producing eye candy for the general ski public like ourselves to feed from, then what direction would our sport have? where would we be heading?

they're both awesome skiers, I'm just saying they were rookies last year or the year before . . . that's when freeze should have featured them. everyone knows them now. . . freeze needs to do a little investigative journalism and go find some real unknowns

Yes people may view skiing through a magazine, but that doesnt change what the pros and the innovators of our sport are doing, all Freeze does is report on the cool shit thats being done now days.

Tony? A rookie? My ass... Tony is not only a great rail slider but he's also a very good SKIER and an awesome jumper. Up on the glacier he would say hi to everyone and make sure everbody was having a killer day (and he basically built all the jumps your asses were making bomb holes on). His jumps in the backcountry are totally progressive...

Same with Steele, he's a really nice guy. These guys are still being called rookies?? That's pretty messed up.

And whoever asked what people would notice after riding with these guys for awhile, THEY'RE BETTER THAN YOU.

The spaces in the article should have gone to other people who are actual rookies; and Tony should've gotten article on him in my mind.

To quote Detective, there is much more to a person and his or her skiing style and ability then what you see in a video or a magazine. Did you feel you should have been in the article? You seem to enjoy letting others know all the tricks you can do in your profile:) Really, there is more space available, maybe you could write about 15 more of your progressive tricks. Now I am being an asshole. I'm just bitter that it is 90 degrees here and I am doing homework.

I don't want to get into this whole argument. I agree with what was said about the article showcasing the future stars of the sport. In that respect the article did a good job.

The one thing I don't understand is that someone said they should include up and comers like Hibbert. Sorry to burst your bubble but Hibbert has been around for years. He may be young but he's not breaking into the sport in any way. btw, this is not a comment on Hibbert as a skier or otherwise, I just wanted to point out that he's less of a new face than some of the people you guys are complaining about.

 
i wasnt shit talking dude. i never once said taht i was better than anyone in the freeze article, nor did i say taht i deserved to be in there. i simply said that if our sport is about progression, then they should showcase progression, and if their intention is to show the up-and-coming rookies of our sport, then they should have not put anthony in there. no insult intended.

and hibbert is one of the most progressive pipe skiers i have had the priviledge to watch ski. linking huge innovative grabs with grabbed unnatatural spins is progression in my book.

Why do u guys enjoy startin shit so much. Many of u are completly uneducated and have no clue what you are talking about, and not just on this one subject. This isnt the 1st time that there has been a complete circle arguement. Your so closed minded, thinking that only your view is right that your missing the point that is tryin to be passed along. Many of you complain about the quality of the site goin down and wonder why that is. Its cause of numerous stupid people who enjoy starting shit and think they know everything about everything and that there is no other opinion other then their own. This site used to kick ass now it seems to be one bitch session after another.
