Garnet and staurolite bearing schist, I think the staurolite is on the other side so I don't know why I photoed this side

1066451.jpeg

Some chert, maybe my favorite

1066452.jpeg

Fuckin text book quality specimen of some galena that my grandpa pulled from his backyard somehow, definitely a favorite

Big ass rock that I got in central west nevada with a bunch of dihedral (?) Quartz that looks like eggs. It's a grave marker now RIP Gimli

1066454.jpeg

Rock in the center has what's called "slickenlines", basically shows which way rocks were moving against other rocks

1066455.jpeg

Bunch of pieces with a layer of chrysocolla, all that blue shit. You're tongue will stick to it.

If I was at home in MN right now I'd definitely post some pics, pops is a geologist and has an insane rock collection.

He used to bring me around this rock shop his buddy owned when I was little, they would just shoot the shit about rocks and I would get a tour of all the cool rocks in the dudes collection.

Literally half the decorations in our house are rocks though, we have part of a fossilized mammoth jawbone in our living room, a bunch of polished fossils, lava, and geode's all over the place, and then he has some insane pieces of amber with prehistoric insects frozen in them.

If I can remember when I go home for summer break I'll post some photos in here, pops likes to show off his rock collection any chance he can get.

I'm more of a bone collector but I have a few rocks!

If you look at the top, there's a fossil of something in this rock. Couldn't tell you what of:

This one I just liked the speckle pattern ?:

And finally this one. I strongly suspect this is a First Nations artifact, possibly made of chert although it is not smooth. I'm sharing this one in particular because it was given to me by a friend who didn't realize that taking artifacts away from what could potentially be a sacred site to First Nations is not a good idea from a professional or ethical standpoint. I've worked on projects alongside First Nation archeologists, so I got a different perspective from that on artifacts/sacred sites and their importance to First Nations and their history. It can't be returned to where it was found (nor should it be randomly moved), so I keep it as an education point now. I know this isn't a serious website most of the time, but I hope this part can be considered as food for thought anyway.

We got a piece of the Kilauea Iki eruption

A random thin section that I don’t remember

And some nice cross bedding in a gravel pit

Ohhh so there is another rock collector.

1066899.jpeg

a piece of gneiss from Rankin Inlet. The specimen formed about 3-3.8 billion years ago

1066900.jpeg

malachite- azurite with high grade silver

1066901.jpegA nice day activity

1066902.jpeg

Some green fluorite in limestone

Not quoting y'all because of scroll bombing but those a dope pieces!

1067266.jpeg

A nice fossil from a limestone, 30k years old I think?

1067267.jpeg

Snabbed a couple of these pyrite rich chunks for kicks and giggles while camping in Squamish

1067268.jpeg

My only piece that wasn't a ground score, my momma got me this one when I was just a boy who likes rocks

1067269.jpeg

I don't remember what this is, sick cross bedding tho

1067270.jpeg

Better photo of my garnet+staurolite schist, no twinning of the staurolite unfortunately, it's that vaguely rectangular shape in the middle left edge area

I had a piece of obsidian at one point but it sliced it's way out of my backpack while mapping

Got some interesting rocks to share, this time from the Hudson Bay lowlands. The one on the left has a cool circle shape in it, possibly from an eddy eroding it or maybe it is a glacial erratic called an 'omar'. The righthand one, I'm not sure what the red is to be honest, maybe iron but I'm no geologist. I think they are both Precambrian rocks, but could also be Proterozoic given the location.

This one is limestone with brachiopod fossils in it:

Looks like you were on a boat to get those! Awesome.

What's in the background of the second picture?! I can't figure it out!

A plastic fricton pad. So your stuff doesnt move when a storm hits. Ive been picking them through the dirt on the cargo container I work one. Somewhere in the Hudson Bay, the beach is littered with them! I cant quite figure it out.

Grise Fjord or coral habour may have the shells and the ferns.

Those are awesome fossils ty for posting! Labradorite looking cool as hell too

In terms of the red rock, I'd be almost certain there's at least of bit of iron in there. Oxidation is rad

I use lots of river rock and gravel at work. I’ve found agates in there before. Anyone know what this is?
