Road bikes

I'm thinking of getting a road bike. I work at a bike shop in town, but I'm only knowledgeable on the mountain bikes- I don't know much about road bikes.

Does anyone ride a road bike, and if so, what would you recommend? I can get a screaming deal on Klein, Trek, and Lemond.

I'm not too serious about road riding, just want to do it to stay in shape- I was considering the Trek 1500.

Any opinions?

Yes, I'm well aware of that. I ride my bike as much as I can.

Back to the matter at hand- anyone?

try trek...the 1200 is a good price for the componentry.

Cool- I checked that bike out and it seems decent.

Someone recommended an Ultegra derailleur, which is on the 1500 but not the 1200.

I could always just buy an Ultegra on the side, though.

I ride a trek 1200, great bikes, all the bike shops are knowlegdable about them so if there's a mis-hap it's no problem. And i think you'll find road bikeing more than just a tool to get in shape, i did. have fun!

The 1200 goes at abotu $850, and the 1500 at $1100. I'm looking at half of these prices, though. I'd be spending $550 on the 1500, which might not be so bad.

^^Haha, those are rediculous. I have a 5200 which as all Ultegra componentry, and I love it. The main difference in the 1500 and the 5200 (aside from the price tag), is the aluminum body versus the carbon body. If you can get a really killer deal on these bikes, try to get a carbon frame. It rides like a dream.

I know two people who ride Lemonds, and both like their bikes. I know another person who rides a Klein (Livman on NS) and he likes his a lot too.

What kind of shoes and pedals are you looking at getting?

road bikes are so fast it is sweet

i have a cannondale R800 and it is the sweetest bike ever. the thing weighs like 2 pounds and it goes so fast it's scary. i used to have a peugeot and it was a real piece of crap, but now that i'm actually racing in triathlons and stuff, i'm so glad i got this bike. go with the cannondales, man. they're the bmers of the cycling industry. good luck.

road bikes are sick. I have one with the locking pedals and i can go so fast.

JIBARITO

(its actually a restaurant in Peurto Rico)

Guitaring for life

Schmitz- I can get the bikes on pro form through the bike shop I work at.

And Freezy- those Madone 5.9s are fucking ridiculous. We've actually got one down at the store here in town. Whenever I work, I just stand there and look at that bike, drooling and dreaming. It's such a sick bike.

I'm not looking at spending too much to get into road biking, so I'll probably just stick with an aluminum frame and get a carbon fork.

For whoever asked about shoes- I've already got a pair of Pearl Izumi Vortex shoes, and I've got some old Shimano clipless pedals sitting around here somewhere. They'll get the job done.

locking pedals are smart if you like the distance but they take a while to get used to. i remember just randomly falling over a lot at first because i couldn't clip out. haha it was prty funny.

Yeah, the clipless pedals will be manageable on the road. It's when you get into technical singletrack riding that they become somewhat problematic. I can recall times where I'd be doing a hill climb or some technical switchbacks, and I'd lose my momentum and not have enough time to clip out before I ate shit. Not too fun when it happens, but it's funny to watch.
