Ripped p14's out of JJ's...help?

pretty pissed, i went cat skiing with a bunch of gapers today for my christmas present. super slow and always fell; then i ended up ripping the heel piece of my look pivots/ rossi fks (brand new mount) out of my JJ's (brand new). i guess shit happens, i overshot a jump and landed pretty flat...

but anyway the store is trying to get me a new heelpiece. but should i:

- get the holes filled and try and mount it in the same spot (-5 true center), or

- mount it 1.5cm forward or back?, or

- put a different binding on in the same spot (rossi axial 15)

thanks in advance, appreciate any help, harry

well the brass inserts are helicoils and they should hold your binding in.. however they will massively reduce of the resale value of your skis to almost nothing, unless you sell with bindings..

that said a new mount pulling out is usually a sign that the shop messed up the mount, unless there is a problem with the core of the skis..

basically do you trust the shop? if you dont then letting them make bigger holes in your skis to put helicoils in might be a bad idea.. it seems weird to me that they suggested a new heelpiece :S pullout is almost never the fault of the binding..

def get the helicoil. It does hurt the resale a little but but JJ's are such a sick ski i doubt you'd ever want to sell them. I know i wouldnt want to sell mine. Ive helicoiled 2 heelpieces and a toepiece over my years and theyve always held strong. Def dont remount in a new spot, JJs are perfect at recommended. With that abrupt of a sidecut underfoot where the camber is, i wouldnt screw with it. Especially since it has such a short effective edge

Some of this is true. Some isn't.

New heelpiece isn't needed. It's not the bindings fault.

JJs are notorious for having a soft core. Personally I would've gone

with something like the STH14; wider mount pattern and 5 screw heel

are great to have on a soft ski.

If it were me, I would t do brass. Brass can crack from the loading

and flexing of the ski. I would do nylon inserts/plugs. They work the

same way as brass, but IMO (and others from who I gathered my intel)

they're better.

That said, the brass inserts are NOT the same as a helicoil. I can

give you info on the differences if you want, but they aren't the same.

If I were going to keep the ski and binding combo, and the mount point

- I'd go with the nylon pound-in inserts. But make sure they use an

epoxy if you want the fix to last, and not that 5-minute crap

either..I suggest West Systems "G/Flex".

But I agree that this might have been at least partly the mount job.

And truthfully partly Armada's fault for two reasons:

1) The soft core in that ski isn't he greatest thing to mout to.

2) On their skis they suggest using a 4.1x9.5 bit...which is a

horrible fuckin' idea. The shop guy hopefully should've known this and

used a 3.6x9.5 bit instead. Either way it doesn't matter much now.

I don't know how you feel about your shop being competent to do this though.

I do all this stuff myself so I know it's done right.

All in all, I'd remount that heel with the nylon pound-in inserts, fill the holes with G/Flex, let it cure for 48 hours and call it good.

i ripped my heelpiece out of a pair scott p4s; they're titanal reinforced....
so that's no guarantee at all..
