London (CNN)[/b] -- Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher,a towering figure in postwar British and world politics and the only woman to become British prime minister, has died at the age of 87.

She suffered a stroke Monday, her spokeswoman said.

Thatcher's funeral will be at St. Paul's Cathedral, with full military honors, followed by a private cremation, the British prime minister's office announced.

Thatcher served from 1975 to 1990 as leader of the Conservative Party. She was called the "Iron Lady" for her personal and political toughness.

The fact of the matter is Margaret Thatcher was one of the great leaders of the 20th century. Barack Obama, for example, has a lot to learn from Margaret Thatcher, especially when it comes to her economic policy.

Strong, decisive and a natural leader, unlike the muppet in charge now. Prolly the greatest postwar prime minister. RIP

The list of good things she did pretty much matches the list of bad things which is relative anyway (i.e if you were a poor miner with kids in school, you're prolly not gonna care too much shes gone).

well she pretty much killed off the only industry that employed the masses in northern england.

safe to say where i live and the surrounding areas the majority are happy she has gone after ruining their lives however many years ago

You neo-cons make me laugh every time. You all idolize Margaret Thatcher, and yet she wouldn't be able to win a modern Republican primary if she tried.

Margaret Thatcher:

Raised taxes

Increased spending

Advocated for socialized medicine

Believed in climate change

etc.

If i was at working age at the time id prolly be pissed at her, but long term i think its a good job we had her. We were broke, had high inflation and just been through strike after strike.

That said her poll tax was a dumb idea and prolly made it easier for her to gain re-election as the poorest people stayed off the electoral roll to avoid paying the tax.

Won't go as low as to cheer for her death.

Since when were we discussing American politics? Who exactly are you calling neo-con? I don't recall seeing anyone recommend that Margaret Thatcher should run for Congress.

The whole point of this thread was to remember the Iron Lady. Whether or not you loved or hated her politics doesn't change the fact that she overcame plenty of bullshit to achieve what she did. Anyone with half of a brain can realize that politics aside, she is someone worth remembering. As a female, I cannot even begin to express my gratitude for her - she is a positive role model for women everywhere. She persevered through Britain's male dominated political system to become one of the Western world's first female political leaders. She always stuck to her convictions, she fought for the preservation of democracy, and the improvement of her country.

No one in this thread is a right-wing extremist. Period. And there is no need to be a fucking asshole and insult everyone who appreciates the Iron Lady and her achievements.

'there's no such thing as society anyway'

she closed mines which meant 1000's lost their jobs, she killed off the main industry in the north and supported the upper classes, completley neglecting her lower middle class roots

Are you guys fucking serious? Have some respect, the lady did more good in her life then anyone in this thread ever will. Im sick and tired of hearing libs say-

"she fucked over miners!!"

and then a minute later say

"We need to stop mining for oil and destroying mountains!!!"

Stop using a person's death for your feministic outcry. I guarantee you had the mindset of going off while makings the thread. She deserves better than to just be used as your puppet. Srsly dah fuck

Uhmmm no. I was just saying that even if you didn't like her politics you can still find stuff to admire about her. The fact that she was one of the first female leaders of the world is one of them.

it was funny when people on twitter were thinking that cher died because of the hashtag NOWTHATCHERISDEAD

now that cher is dead? no, now >thatcher< is dead

rofl, i heard that story on the radio this morning driving in to work and lol'd my titties off

We didn't need to be.

You.

I don't either, but you know exactly what I was saying.

Agreed.

Stop with the feminist bullshit. I see her as an equal.

How did I insult anyone?

Yeah we didn't. So why did you have to bring it up?

Calling me a neo-con? Really? I openly support gay marriage, am pro-choice, and acknowledge global climate change. Seeing as you have never even met me it's kinda crazy that you would assert that in a thread that was just meant to remember a great leader.

FINALLY, we agree.

Feminist bullshit? Really? If you even bothered to read what I wrote you would see that I was simply providing an example as to why (even if you disagree with her politics) she can be appreciated universally. I just said I was proud of her to overcome the social bullshit of her day to become the UK's first female prime minister. I never suggested that you didn't see her as an equal, and I know you aren't dense enough to believe that back then being a woman in politics wasn't difficult.

Well, for starters, you insulted me by calling me a "neo-con" and basically insinuating that I am some sort of insane right-winger, which really isn't the case. As I have said before, the purpose of this thread was to just remember what a great lady Margaret Thatcher was. Everyone (even if they didn't particularly like what she had to say) can acknowledge that she left a pretty powerful legacy. So shut up and don't post if you don't care or have nothing nice to say.

she most definitely did more good than bad, the "bad" she did can be seen as wrong on one side, or a necessary sacrifice on the other. the impact she had was definitely a positive.

99% of the people in this thread have no idea what she did or who she was up until her death. So ignorant to celebrate a death that you dont even understand
