Right To Be Frustrated?

Hi everyone,

At Stevens Pass this evening, my brother on the flat run nearing the lift, with nobody within 20-30 feet of him, did a polish donut. He’s done a lot of them, and did this one cleanly and in control.

1 minute later, a ski patroller hops on the lift with us and vaguely threatened to throw the book at us, claiming my brother “wasn’t in control” and could’ve hit someone. The patroller also was blatantly dishonest, saying he “almost hit” her, when in reality, I watched and the patroller was essentially nowhere in sight. I proceeded to ask why terrain parks are built, claiming that everyone skis thru them while people are learning new tricks, and you could get just us as hurt there as anywhere else on the mountain. I said, “Why is a slowly done polish donut so dangerous?”

Quite honestly at this point, we tuned the patroller out, as they proceeded to fumble around with words and change the subject. I think they were caught off guard. Haha!

Anyways, it’s been a minute since I’ve picked the brains of everyone here. Is this worth being pissed about? Anybody else have any recent similar experiences at the Galactic Empire’s (Vail) resorts?

Thanks!

I too find that defining a polish donut would greatly add context to this complicated and frustrating encounter.

I apologize, maybe I’m naming the trick completely wrong. Where you spin around on the ground 360 degrees and then come back up on to your feet. Maybe someone can link a GIF here.

Always 3 sides to a story. Your side, their side, and the truth.

You say 20-30ft but even when going a mellow 20mph distances can close fast. Idk just bein the devil's advocate.

It is pretty easy to tell when people are in control or not so idk. Nothin' came of it so ski on, no need to be bummin.

i belive hes means when you curl in a ball grabbing your knees and slide a 3 on one side of your body

That was exactly what I envisioned. I didn’t know it was called a polish donut though, sounds like an urban dictionary term.

while this is true - i wasn’t going anywhere near 20mph. it was verrrrry slow :/

no passes got pulled and we didn’t see her again so i guess that’s the bright side :)

My bad bro. Maybe I have the trick name 100% wrong

Take a chill pill my dude. Focus on the flow state instead of storing pent-up rage about encounters with patrollers doing their jobs, well or terribly. There will be lots of people in life giving you shit, justified or not. As long as it's not serious, shrugging it off and having a beer will keep you mentally sound.

There’s not any pent up rage here per say, but I agree 100% about the beer method!

If you came to post about it, there's probably a bit of butt hurt. I get it. That's normal. With age you shrug that stuff off better.

None of you guys have eve heard of a polish donut?? It's the trick where you lie flat on the snow and spin around, hard to explain but here is a clip..

I see what you mean, yeah. I posted about here to lightly vent but also see if these types of patrol encounters are happening more. Maybe I should try to act 23 y/o more, hahaha

Let us stop the spread of misinformation: a Polish Donut and Worm Turn are distinctly different maneuvers.

I believe a polish donut is more commonly referred to as a worm turn

Nah they are different. A worm turn is more on your stomach, polish donut is ok your side.

A worm turn is like a barrel roll where you just lay to one side and go to your stomach with skis in the air off the snow, and continue the roll to where you’re back face up with skis under you.

A polish donut you carve a turn and load your edge and use the energy of the turn to lay on your side and your feet swing uphill in a full 360 back to downhill, so like a backflip while you’re laying on your side the whole time (hard to explain hope that makes sense). Your skis literally make a circle like a donut.

So just to confirm is a polish donut the same as a worm turn or have I got the wrong idea here?

at 4:14 he does it which helped me understand it or was I not supposed to end the game of post charades

3:47 shows a worm turn, then polish donut right after. Pipe version is sick!
