Riding backseat

i was just reminiscing about skiing some nice bowls at whistler this year (harmony in particular for those of you who know), and thinking about my shitty form. now, before you criticize, let me tell you that after a 10 year break (thanks, stupid snowboarding), this was my second season back on skis. i live in NYC, so bowls aren't exactly plentiful out here.

anyway, dropping off the lip was fine, but when things flattened out, i found myself riding mega backseat. like so much that my tips were coming out of the snow. i honestly felt like a retard, but didn't think i could get out of there any other way.

what is up with this and what is the correct form when skiing 10 or so inches of powder?

the proper form when skiing anywhere is to be in a neutral stance. Not jamming on the front but not dragging your ass. This is very hard to do, I know skiers that have been skiing for 35+ years and stil havent completly mastered it. I find that i always am on the front of my boot because i use to race. It is how i ski and how i will always ski to a certian point.

Yeah, its kind of a natural reaction to lean back when you start leaning downhill like that. But the key is to just overcompensate. Just lean forwards more than you think you'll need to and it should work out.

PSIA always stresses shins more into the boot with a straight back. its kind of hard to get used to but the more you do it the easier it becomes just like everything else.

When things flatten out I usually lean back a little more, not because it helps, but because it's just kind of fun. Skiing powder is all about finding the balancing point on your ski; it all depends on snow consistency/depth, the ski you're on, and how big you are. Generally you'll want your weight in a more neutral position than on hardpack just to keep your tips from diving, but you'll figure it out soon enough. Not a bad thing to practice at, either.

Bend Ankles, Bend Knees, Hips Forward, Arms Ahead, Pole Plant. Keep this same form in the powder, and you can get a little back, but it's mostly easier if your not to far ahead, and not to far back.

three years ago the first time i skied west coast powder i was trying much to hard to make slashing turns and shit, and i was doing the same thing, just lean forward and ski fast, and u wont have a problem.

When you are straightlining, you can't lean forward, or you will have tip dive, especially with more center mounted stance, unless you have very soft skis. Don't worry about it, you are keeping speed going through flat powder. just don't drag your ass, that looks dumb. lean back, but stand in your normal position... knees bent, hands in front.

When you are skiing in the bowls, you can stay more forward if you are being agressive and keeping your speed up, but you have to find the balance. powder is hard to get used to skiing right, and even harder when faced with a more center mounted ski.

well im not sure if u acctually want to do this....but when i took my level 1, what they said to do to keep centered was to when u were standing up to keep your hands in front, by droping them it made u go back seat. You have ur hands raised in front and your poll baskets perpendiculare to your ski boot. I dont know ive never tried this while free sking but u can try it if u want

this is more of a trick to get people who are backseat forward. if you ski forwards, you can do so with your hands at your sides, but if you want to have what is considered proper form, hands need to be in front.

Urm okies, after a season at fernie and never skiing powder before i learnt in the best conditions, haha i also had lessons with level 4 examiners most days,

Basically the main tip was to keep everything the same but let the area around your belly button drop back a tad, and tehn just ski chilled out.

hahahah same here. a bunch of people bitch how im good at park but im horrible at all around skiing. i started working on it but not too much. ive only been ksiing for 2 years anyways so i got time to learn

perfecto

but if you're skiing whistler there isn't as much hardpack up in Harmony as down lower.

It all depends on what snow you're skiing on.

"if you saw the thread on me" what a claimer, you cant even ski outta the park and you ski backseat even when youre in the park, YOU SUCK.

Never diss a Baker skier.

Go die in a hole, if you ever saw the thread on him you would know he's actually a good skier

while skiing you should always feel pressure on the front of ur boot... but i love to strightline in pow and lean way way way way back and kida hop on my tains on flater slopes.. its bunches of fun

i'm glad you guys read between the lines, yeah, i was having problems straightlining in powder without leaning really far back. anyway, thanks for the advice, i'll be sure to heed the good advice when the snow starts falling again!

ok forget it then. i just said it because it works wonders for me. maybe it's because i'm just so damn good...
