Could someone tell me why people who's names are Richard are also called Dick? Or atleast let me know that I'm not the only one wondering this.
 
i dont know why, but ive always loved the name william robert joseph cause its like the most esteemed name ever but it shortens down to billy bob joe, the most like hick name evar
 
I simply do not understand. I will never name my kid Richard for this reason. It just seems like the most degrading shit ever for your name to basically be Dick.
 
my name is richard. my last name is williams, and i look like a duck so people call me dick bill. I dont mind being called dick, or dicky but most people call me rich or lluttrell.

but degrading? no, not at all unless you are really insecure
 
It's the same way that Jesse is short for Jessica, ya or like how Captain Pine isshort for Caaapptaain Piiiinnnee
 
A friend of mine growing up had a father named Richard Head. Good times making fun of that name.
 
The guy who helps my dad with our computer when we get a virus or something, is named Richard Aiken. Trust me I'm not immautre enough to make that up, all true. I even have one of his business cards.
 
same. theres a guy that lives down the street from me whos name is Richard Head. Just a fun fact about him.....like 2 years ago his house was hit by a plane (he lives right next to a field) when the pilot tried to make an emergency landing. Pretty crazy shit, the news team and helicopters were all over my street and the next street.
 
theres a substitute teacher at my school named Dick Holman. and if you mess with the sylables a little its sounds like Dickholeman.

i knew this dude named richard ward and he had a really bad boston accent and became: Dick Wad
