Rich People

This year at Pebble Beach some poor soul paid over $34,000,000 for a Ferrari that cost $18,000 out of the factory and a mere $10,000 to produce. Meanwhile, I had to get a small malt a Culver's because the medium one was to expensive.

Does this anger you as well?

Its not like he was just spending 34million on something to drive around, it is a controlled investment. He spent $34 and will sell it in 5 years for $46 (to some Chinese or Middle East guy) make a quick $12.

I work at a high end hotel, the guest surveys we get are usually marked with the highest income level $350k+, it's insane, wtf do these people even do... they complain about employees making 10 bucks an hour, that's what they do. Fuck rich people, it's all just fuckin' dirty slave money anyway at that point.

$18,000 in 1962 is about $140,000 adjusted in 2014. It's crazy that it's worth $34,000,000 now, but such is life. It's also one of the most beautiful cars ever made...

The art world is crazier..

Card Players by Cezanne last sold for over $259M ($273M adjusted)

No. 5 by Pollock sold for $140M in 2006 (about $164M adjusted)

Don't hate on rich people. Most likely everyone on NS is better off than your average. People work their arses off to have mils.

I'm sure you come from a long line of rich motherfuckers if that's really what your dad makes.

I don't think that is any of your business and some people do work their ass off to get to that point so you shouldn't assume.

a dentist? no way he makes that much from teething, median dentist salary in the us is like $150k (http://www1.salary.com/Dentist-Salary.html). He must have lots of family money generating investment income. Either way you're right about most people not changing, most little rich prick kids grow up into rich prick adults.

But work hard get payed hard? Not the case. Plenty of people work multiple jobs just to break even. Hard work doesn't correlate with getting paid big bucks, however coming from a wealthy family usually does.

eh, it's a discussion point he brought up, so it's kind of my business, just a little. jokingly asking isn't some huge invasion of privacy. And yes there are many cases of anecdotal evidence where someone got to $350k+ a year income on their own. I think Emilio Estevez made that much for a few years and god knows he didn't have any help.

become a dentist, buy a building, hire other dentist to work in that building for your "dentist company" (dont know what you should call it) and maybe after 35 years of working you balls off you'd get paid 350k...

becoming a wealthy family has to start at some point

Oh get over yourself. I'm family friends with the guy who basically invented remotely turning on and off appliances, lights, etc with your phone if you aren't in your house. Total millionaire but one the nicest and most humble people I know. And prick kids? His son's a Navy SEAL.

gettin' rich by exploiting other's labor, thank god workers are more protected today than they used to be

I like the way he leads off his post by saying his father is a dentist in the Netherlands, and so your rebuttal is to claim that's impossible based on the median dentist salary in the United States...

Excellent anecdotal example of a 1 in a million guy who got rich from an idea. Prick kids? trained murder? sounds about right, so it begins.

not impossible, just not really probable (I couldn't find the numbers for dentists in the netherlands without looking harder) and it turns out his father owns a dental practice, how much does he pay the dentists who work under him? That's what a dentist makes.

Some little butthurt rich kids on this thread. You don't need to list how much money your parents make and defend their actions to the stereotype. The initial thread was about millioniares buying "stupid" stuff.

OP why don't you stop complaining and go out and get a job and start working? Some people are very successful and can by 30M ferraris...don't be jelous...look up to those people. They obviously are doing something a hell of a lot better than you are.

How about this for a start OP? Get into a top college, crush your grades, and get a great job making bank. If your already out of college...well than sorry to break it to you buddy but you fucked up then.

Actually I'm broke because I'm in college.

Even after having a job for 3 months I just started setting some aside and as of tonight will be around $60-$70 mostly because of paying for gas/ food.

This fucking kid though

Exactly this.

Cars like these are not purchased to drive 99.9% of the time. They are stored, maintained, maybe driven 150 miles in 10 years, and then sold again. It is an investment, not a car.

Good for him. I mean, obviously his success and brains come from his genes, but he actually made and earned his money, instead of inheriting it. He also doesn't seem like a total prick, but that's hard to determine.

Everyone saying that coming from a wealthy family will make you rich is true most of the time. Most typically your parents, grandparents, and so on, worked hard. They went through several years of college and spent a lot of time at a lot of different jobs. The reason is because being rich and working hard is the only thing they know and so their parents are going to push them and want them to succeed. Thats not always the case though so dont freak out and tell me everything is a lie.

Yur the epitome of a fucking tool. My dad came from nothing, valedicted a prestegious med school, and became one of the highest earning doctors in the world.

People like you always complain about the rich because you are desperate to find some justification of why you cant join them other than the obvious; youre inferior

Howabout you get a job. Oh wait you do, I didn't know the Irish wrote songs about you! I just found one!

Great your in college...first step to becoming wealthy (for most people obviously zuckerberg, gates, are anomalies). College is an investment that pays dividends throughout your lifetime. Get the highest grades possible, study a solid major that actually will land you a good job (aka not english, art, etc). Im talking about a 3.5 gPA+.

Your at the beginning of your career. Get good internships and work hard maybe you will get an offer at least you will be able to build a resume. No need to hate on the wealthy just because they have what you want. Trust me man....grass is always greener on the other side. I know plenty of very very wealth people who live normal lives...yea they might have a yacht or a ferrari but they still have normal problems that everyone deals with.

Well thanks for the advice, I do appreciate it. I however do not have a desire to become wealthy. I picked a career (Nursing) that I knew would have plenty of jobs wherever I looked and would provide a steady decent income and room for advancement. I do want to leave the avenue open for later in life if I ever want to attend medical school so my GPA has been my number one priority since my freshman year.

Nurses make a very decent amount of money. Remember that money does not equal wealth, and that if you can make enough money doing something that if not enjoyable is at least tolerable, you can live a very fulfilling life.

Not everybody becomes rich, it takes alot of talent besides hard work which is also required.

Any job that cosistently puts money in the bank that you can save leads to a great situation. If you save money for long enough you will start making serious money off interest, which is what i consider the holy grail of actually being rich; being able to sit back and collect risk free capital gains off ur hard earned money.

I honestly have been putting away 30% of every paycheck since I was 15 and started investing in my 401k at 17. I agree saving for retirement and having an emergency fund is very important.

Its not so much important as a luxury. Alot of my friends live ski bum jobs paycheck to paycheck. Theres nothing wrong with that. But if you can save money thats awesome because you will eventually start making serious bank off of interest. How much have u saved so far, 401 included?

Well i'm not one to openly talk finances because for some reason that is looked down upon in our society but I do have a ways over $20,000 in savings. My company had a dollar for dollar 401k and I have worked there for a few years so that is decent as well. However due to me finishing college I am going to have to either roll it over to an IRA or cashout because they don't let you leave it with them once you quit.

As for it not being important, I would have to disagree with that. I know it is hard to see now but we all get old and if you don't start saving early it just becomes a hassle later in life. I would rather invest a little now than invest lots later or work full time until i'm dead. And yes interest can be a bonus but with what the rates are now I don't think I will be making "bank" any time soon.

Enough said. Clearly you're just the asshole son of an asshole-y rich asshole. Asshole.

I agree with OP on a certain level, but not on the scale he's talking about. Once you get to like Rothschild or Rockefeller status, then yes, a lot of the wealth is made in conniving ways and it produces shitty people. But not in the average-level successful business person like what's being discussed in this thread.
