Review: Moment Comi (racestock version)

Moment was running a deal on some stiff Comi's for $350 so I jumped all over it figuring it would be a solid post-pow ski given the 160-136-145 dimensions and stiff flex. Turns out, this ski rails in almost everything you throw at it.

Had these out in 2.5 days at Vail in boot- to knee-deep powder that was light and not so light. They're mounted with 916s 1.5cm behind the line (or 8.5cm from chord center). I put this back a bit since I eat too much food (I'm 5/10, 215lbs on a good day) and the 3cm of camber had me concerned.

First impressions? Wow. In powder, these were a blast with no speed limit at all. Super quick in tight spots and trees and they're pretty easy to maneuver in a split second. No tip dive at all and you can really drive the tips when you want to. Once things get tracked out, the Comi can haul ass through the crud with ease. No problems on hardpack, moguls, or firm conditions, although there was some discomfort on long, flat traverses (probably their only downside so far).

So far, I'm super stoked on these. They're pretty much the powder ski I've been looking for: something wide but fairly stiff to handle the days after a storm.

Not sure if Vimeo embedding works here, but here's a clip from yesterday:

There's an extra layer or two of glass in the ski. "Racestock" ... "stiff" ... whatever floats your boat.

sick video, looked like a lot of fun through those aspen trees.

i take it that these are the ones without the swallow tail right? how do they handle on drops/cliffs? i've been looking at either these (not the racestocks) or the k2 pontoons, i'm 5'10, 135 pound kid, think I could handle them alright?

The Comi comes in only one standard shape/size. Regarding the swallowtail option, you're thinking of the Comi-Kazi which is 6cm longer in length, has 54cm of tip rocker, and is a lot softer (especially in the tip).

I haven't done too many drops with them yet and none bigger than 10'. I had trouble landing backseat last season and for some reason I'm landing too far forward so far this season. Seems you have to have a pretty center stance when landing on the Comi ... though my form might just suck completely.

At 5'10" and 135lbs, you would probably be too light to handle the racestock version, but the regular version shouldn't pose too much trouble if you're a strong skier.

What I liked most about the Comi is that you can drive the tips in powder and charge hard or you can lay off a little and smear your turns. Super fun ski that's for sure.
