Resorts in north Carolina???

So, me and some friends are heading over to the states, none of us have ever ski'd over there before so we're super stoked!!! Basically we have to go to north Carolina cuz we're skiing for a week and then visiting one of the guys relatives. My question to you, which is the best resort in north Carolina? Decent park, loads of black runs and some good back country? Main thing is loads of blacks. Thanks guys!

Pretty sure there's nothing with BC or lots of blacks. The closest 'big' mountain to NC is probably Snowshoe WV, or Wintergreen VA is ok.
 
There really arent many blacks that are difficult in NC. App ski mtn has by far the best terrain park in the state though. Sugar mtn in banner elk has a double black, but I avoid sugar because everyone there is a first time skiier and isnt all that great. My favorite would have to be Beech mtn. Its got some mouguls right now and a few decently steep blacks. The park is just ok. Also if you go over the peak of the mtn theres some decent back country. A bit rocky though. To the right of Beech there are some telephone lines and I always see people skiing down that area ( its probably as long as the actual resort, only harder terrain). If you want to see sone videos of the terrain park at App look up some charlie owens videos on here. I dont think I've seen that kid there for a good 3 months though.
 
Sugar is good during the week, however on the weekends its insane. Every time I go there I see like at least 5 people go down big red on a meatsled. that hill isnt even steep. It really bottlenecks at the bottom too... then again so does beech
 
Thanks guys. Fucks sake, that doesn't sound promising. So whats the biggest resort near NC? Like in a different state? We're there for a week like so i don't wanna get bored of the resort in 2 days.
 
im not from north carolina, never been there but im pretty certain there is not much at all of "good skiing" or any back country. the vids ive seen from app ski mtn shows that they have a dope park. but idk where your used to skiing so it could be fun or you could be very disapointed

that backside of beech looks alright given that its NC... but yeah for a week trip the only place worth going is snowshoe WV which is like a 6.5 hour drive from RDU.
 
Thats actually not the backside. thats like next to the resort in an area that was cleared for power lines. I couldnt find a pic of the back side but when I get up to my friends house again you can see it from there and ill snap one. Its pretty intense. Almost too much rock to ski at the top and weve got like 80" of natural snow or mabie more
 
I dont think there is any BC anywhere below NY on the east. Snowshoe isn't bad. Good steeps and their park is getting better than past years and the Village it at the top of the mountain (which is kinda weird) but they have been getting dumped on this year. I was supposed to go down this weekend for the WV Open but we decided not to because of the "Blizzard Warning" and the road down to there kinda sucks but I'm coming from the top of the state.
 
Haha just hope that they dont close all the jumps like they did last weekend... well that was for shread for the cup big air but whatever. They have a table top with a wall ride/box on the side and its so hard to clear.
 
My home resort is La Clusaz so i'm used to skiing the french alps. So we're looking outside NC now, Park City maybe?
 
honestly you are kinda spoilt at home, the french alps have some of the best terrain in the world. I'd head for somewhere with a dope park/cool vibe, and be happy with the terrain you have back home.
 
yea do not even attempt the road to snowshoe during bad weather unless you have 4 wd. I am here(at snowshoe) now, but it was a nightmare getting up here. didnt bring my 4wd cuz when I called they said the roads were fine. they werent.
 
Well if you want to make the drive, you could just visit the first day and drive for 2 days straight, make it to park city for 3 days, then drive back.
 
I'm looking at flying to the nearest airport to park city, staying for a week then driving up to NC for a few days and flying home from there. Thanks for the help guys!
 
i dont know who you are but i have never seen you at app, and it is not hard to clear at all. and to op if you want park definatley come to app but for blacks or bc dont come to nc
 
The way they had everything set up a week ago I couldnt get enough speed to clear it. I mean If I straight aired I could. But that takes the fun out of it. I usually ski beech btw. My friends got a house in elk river. I've only made it to app like 5 times this season.
 
If you are going to that far out of the way you might as well go to Canyons, more blacks and pretty close to the depth of Park City's Park. Or shave an hour off of the flight and go to Vail
 
To the OP, America is fucking huge. If you think you will fly into SLC and ski PC and then drive to NC and fly home from there you are sadly mistaken. First of all its a 2 day drive at the least, and the amount of money you would need to throw down on a rental car to drive 2000+/- miles wouldnt be worth it. Best advice is to keep your skis at home and experience america. Depending on when you are coming the South is warm so drive to OBX or Myrtle Beach, chill in Charlotte, Go to Duke or UNC to party, anything but skiing.

fuck pc and all that garbage. youll be much happier with snowbird, alta, brighton, solitude.

In nc, the blacks arent what you would consider blacks. They would be greens or blues out west, and most of the time they are ice.

It looks like someone found my beech picture. this season has been exceptionally good, and that "bc" line to the side of beech is prob unskiable again.

if you have to stay down here go snowshoe/timberline/whitegrass.
 
Shit man, do you know what part of the US you're going to? I'm from SC so I hit up App and the surrounding mountains a few times a year. If you're skiing the French Alps at home, don't even bother to try and find BC or diamonds in NC...If you really wanna try some of the worst skiing in the states, go for it, but don't be pissed or snobby about it when you get there. The park at APP is really fun, and definitely the best in the state, with 3 areas (beginner, med, hardest shit) with (the last time I was there) some kickers, tabletop, flat boxes, some flat and down flat and (i think) a down flat down....various other shit. Their "black diamonds" , however, are basically straight line groomers with about a ~20s run time...Haven't been to Beech or Sugar this year, but from what I hear the park is weak. The runs are a few minutes long, generally. I love to go skiin in NC, and its definitely a fun time, but don't expect a life changing ski experience...not that you were. Hope that helps at all, sorry if I came across as a dick.

Oh yeah, to all the Boone area locals, what happened to Hawk's Nest? I know its gone, but what did they do with it/ whats the story? Just weren't makin ends meet?
 
The night I had saga on? I hit the park for a bit, but I was with a kid and his dad and a snowboarder. The kid I was with is learning to ski the park and his dad had us ski the other slopes with him. I was also pretty frustrated with my silencers because ski country mounted them in core center instead of true center and then they sharpened my edges when I wanted them detuned

As for hawksnest, I skied it earlier this year. To whoever said it was sold, are you sure about that? I know the town of seven devils basically killed it. Hawksnest always wanted to expand, and they shut the resort down. The owner said he wasnt going to open again with a shitty town restricting it. Hawksnest was sick. A couple friends and I drove up in early january to ski it. Theres a road that pretty much goes to the top, so we hiked up and even though there was fresh everywhere around, hawksnest shows it doesnt change and it was all ice. The chairs are still up. The ski trail signs are still there. It could def be operational in the near future. The ice storm around christmas brought down a lot of branches, which killed our hopes of skiing some trees off the top of the mountain(along with tight trees). We skied around the top quickly. We would have gone down top gun if it had been good, but we didnt explore too much as getting charged with tresspassing would have sucked.
