Resort expansions, for or against?

Over the years resorts gain popularity and become busier and busier, leaving less room for us skibums. But the fact that resorts now start to put their boundaries further and further away into powder heavens is kind of pissing me off. Theres about 4 projects of new resorts and expansions in BC right now, and I dont think it can mean any good for skiers, except hiking further to find sick lines and trashed powder from the rich tourists... I started this thread after checking on the rumors about a new bigass resort at squamish, "garibaldi at squamish", and i dont like the sight of it...

"This proposed ski resort planned for construction 13 km north of Squamish will include ski and snowboard area boundary encompassing 1,670 ha (4,125 acres); 176 marked trails, plus alpine bowls; snowboard park; nordic trails. Summer season facilities will include mountain biking and hiking trails, golf learning centre, tennis centre and camping. Garibaldi at Squamish is currently undergoing the Government of British Columbia's Environmental Assessment process."

Breck wants to build a high speed quad to the summit of peak eight. This would take every fucking Texan to what is now a half hour hike or so. The lift would ruin the only decent in bounds skiing at Breck, as well as put gapers on top of Lake Chutes. I guarentee you that some fucking gaper will get there ass killed there if the lift goes in. The lift itself would be a pain in the ass for everybody but the gapers. Every single chair would be taken off the line every night, and put on every morning. I was a lifty at Breck this year and working the t-bar was bad enough with the gapers. Nobody living here wants the lift, tourists don't even know about it, Breck just wants the bragging rights of having the highest chairlift in the U.S. I think that is a perfect example of the crude expansionist thinking of large resorts. Not only that but now Breck is tearing down all the smoke shacks hidden in the woods. The shacks are an integral part of the mountain for locals, and again, gapers don't even know about them. Large resorts take advantage of locals over and over for no reason. Vail doesn't even have any free parking, do you want to pay fifteen bucks for parking everyday?

our local area has put in 3 three chairs in the last 7 years. opening up our area to over 1000 acres. its been pretty cool. but i live in montana so i dont have to worry about backcountry disapearing.

The resort proposed for Squamish will probably never see the light of day, all the investors fell through and the company is broke.

^o really I thought it was still on trial with the natives and stuff?

I'm not really concerned with other resorts but I really hope they don't do anything to Eaglecrest.

I totally agree with how weak it is that they are going to build a quad up eight at breck. But ive ben skiing there for like 10 years and never once seen one of these "smoke shacks" where they at?

"hey guys, i brought brownies!" "They got weed in 'em?"

as far as bachelor, in oregon, i dont have any problems with them exp-anding soon as long as they dont go all the way around the mountain. That would suck, but they dont have enough money for all of that. Right now, if you go out to the farthest (and best) lifts, the ones w/ no lodge or parking lot in sight, theres no one there. And the pow pow there is awesome. If they want to put more here im fine with it. For small mountains with to many people, im completely against it. Sorry east coast, glad im not you

Hmm...it sort of depends I guess, if a small hill expands into a medium hill, I still don't think it will attract as many tourists as bigger places like Whistler or Mammoth, so if the place expands for the locals, and you don't get run down by gapers, it's fine, but if it turns into some rich ass tourist destination it can kinda suck.
