We just pushed out a major update to the back end of Newschoolers, which is designed to get rid of an extremely legacy problem with the Character set we used.

When you have seen broken/weird characters on Newschoolers, they are all caused by the fact that in 1999 Harvey chose one Character set, and it wasn't the one which got popular.

With this, you should be able to post all the weird characters and Emojis (or whatever) you want!

However, we'll need all of you to report anything weird you see that is broken. This was a monster update, and though it seems simple it literally touched every part of the code base. Expect a few bugs over the next week, we did as much testing as is possible but it is likely we missed a few things.

Report what you see in this thread, and please try to include a screen grab, browser type, OS, Device when you post!
 
I haven't seen anything yet... This update is nothing like when the font got bigger (I really like how much easier it is to post images. Not sure when this happened.)

A lot of images don't show up. Like some avatars, the splash page main picture, and some other seemingly random ones. Just started happening a few days ago.

Shouldn't be - is that persistent? It *likely* has something to do with the DDOS protection we put in. Sometimes it gets false signals and blocks regular users. Grab a screen shot next time you see it, and let me know how many times it happens per day/week/whatever.

Can you screen grab a few specific examples, and provide a link to a page where you consistently don't get images?

We've had random reports of this coming in from a few places, so I definitely know its happening. Any more information will be greatly appreciated!

FYI - We just pushed out a change which should address this... hopefully you don't see it again, but if you do let me know.
 
Found a small bug. Its in the feedback section for members. If someone has a double digit downvote the formatting gets messed up. The negative sign makes the second digit drop down

I am on a laptop using Firefox. Tons of videos have no thumbnails. I have had some be there for a day or two, then they go away. A black square makes it hard to draw interest.

Same. I've got adblock disabled, and have given NS all the permissions I can. Half of my home page isn't loading, video, picture and article thumbnails.
 
Adsense ads are taking up more space on screen than they should - everywhere really - makes the top half of the screen unusable.

I'm using Brave 0.23.104 with all shields down.
 
thumbnails still havnt been loading for me, which is a huge bummer to anyone uploading content having it just be a grey box, way less likely to be seen without an engaging thumbnail. Hoping this can be fixed soon!

Yeah, this weird caching issue has been popping up all over the place lately, looking into it.

No - but we've been busy building stuff for the summer and are just getting finished up. Some bugs are by the wayside and the second we get our new gear guide out the door we'll be going back to bug chasing every day.

It is a regular cycle to be a little more lenient on bugs in the summer to leave time for new development.

I have the same thumbnail issue with Firefox. No ad blocking etc. All trackers allowed.

Slightly less thumbs missing with chrome, but still not right. Both laptop use.

Yeah, we've seen this and are working on it. It is a sitewide issue.

I'm still getting a few blank thumbnails, but it's way way better now on my Firefox!

Still missing a few on Chrome as well.

Maybe it will get more solid as new uploads come in?

Anyway it's way way better.

Try to clear your cache. This entire thing was due to a bad cache, so they’ll all cycle through as they expire but in theory you can force refresh and it will clean it all up!

Sorry about that, it was a problem with a new thumbnail generator we installed.

Let me know if the cache clearing worked. If you're still seeing random broken images, there could be another bug with the thumbnailer.

Yea, I cleaned, but was still missing a few thumbs. I always was looking through Videos-Latest.

I feel like this has been an issue before, but normally we upload through vimeo so I haven't experienced it lately

basically I can't upload a custom thumbnail for our video, only select one of the presets. When I upload one the window closes automatically, when I go back it says the custom one is being used (even though it isn't) and if I try and click save it just says loading indefinitely.

Couldn't find a thread on this in the Search, but I can't seem to play any NS videos that are internal to the site. YouTube and Vimeo function as normal. Do I need to have Flash? Is that still a thing?
 
NSG is..... wide? Idk how to explain it. It's wide on mobile, no other forum does this. Tried pinching my phone screen to shrink it, but that doesn't do anything.

I'm not really sure if this is the right thread but whatever, on the Newschoolers app there are a couple of things annoying me. 1st is when I'm at the bottom of a thread and hit the my thread button it'll think I've hit the advert at the bottom and load that. The click through thing seems to happen on YouTube videos on the home page too.

2nd is not being able to scroll up on a comment while writing it.

Lately when I post it likes my own post without me doing anything.

It didn’t do it this time but it has been doing it

Satanworshiper has had a couple OP's deleted(?) but the thread is still there - not sure if this is intentional or something weird is going on! Example below, I clicked on the thread from their profile and this is what shows.
