I have had two reconstructions done. My meniscus repared, and two scopes. Any one else in the same boat as I am? Should i switch to snowboarding to save my knees? Is there hope of me ever hitting tables again?

I had ACL surgery and some menicus damaged fixed about 4 months ago and i plan to be charging hard when i start skiing.

my friend just tore his acl. now hes goin back for round 2 of surgery. poor guy, tore it last year first run dicking around on a cat walk, out for the season. now this year, he tore it on an urban rail, going to miss season number 2. bad luck i guess.

my friend is a really good racer, and awesome soccer player ...she tore one twice and the other once, and she is still going strong ... shes overcome every surgery and gone on to get better

3 acl surgeries and possibly one on my left leg for my meniscus and to try to fix the fact that my femur/kneecap/meniscus won't line up and stop popping out.

is snowboarding easier on the knees? there are not the twists like skis (aka you catch on ski and twist your knee)

jan 8, 2004 - torn left acl

feb 26, 2004 - cadaver allographt surgery

physical therapy, rehab, strengthening...

oct 15, 2004 - first day back on snow

dec 11, 2004 - re-torn left acl

jan 5, 2005 - patella tendon autographt surgery

physical therapy, rehab, strengthening...

nov 4, 2005 - first day back on snow

we'll see what happens next

all i can say is that some people have had their surgeries work perfectly fine, while others had theirs fail for a veriety of reasons (for instance my donor tendon never fully vascularized with my own tissues)

the second time around is a horrible mental game, any faith that i had after my first surgery has been completely taken away for this second surgery. i can't handle going through it a third time.

and yes, i am considering snowboarding a bit this year to both keep from twisting my knees as much, as well as keep my skiing aggression at bay

For ACL surgery - have them harvest from your hamstring, someone elses dead meat isn't going to hold up. of course that is only my opinion. Recovery is longer, but just think about it. Meniscus, if your OS has talent, see if it can be sewn back together, don't let them remove it.. here again.. my opinion!!!

yeah from the research i've done hamstring is definitely the best option... longer recovery but is the strongest and has the best chance of not stretching out over time or getting weaker.

as for meniscus, I learned about all that in class. it depends where the tear is. sometimes, it's impossible to sew it back together, because it's right where your bones rub and it would retear anyways. other times, around the edges, it can work super well. but yes try to keep your meniscus at all costs. any loss of it causes hardcore osteoarthritis pretty fast.

good luck with everything, and if anyone wants more info, pm me to get in the acl survivors cult.

my dad has had 6 knee surgeries, the doctors say that if he has to have another, they have to replace his kness cuz theyve cut so much up there wont be anything left. he played soccer in high school in college, and skied his whole life. hes still a crazy motherfucker for being mid forties and still huckin 3s.

geez im glad i have yet to seriously injure my knees..........i better get stronger pronto, i dont want any injuries this year.

I tore off both acls and outer lcl may last year. got surgery early june and went to physical therapy for like 3 months almost every day. started training with weights (feet spesific) in september.

First day of skiing Nov 27. and I skied pretty much the whole season takin it easy and slow as my knee was pretty sore. this year im looking to step it up a notch. taking it easy last season i think ill be able to charge alot more this year. go easy, your ligaments are not forgiving!!!

i tore mine when i was 16 and missed the season. then when i was 17 i tore it on a trampoline 2 days before the season started. skiied my first full season last year and did great. going on 2 seasons in a row.

so i tore my right acl and did a hamstring graft and miniscus repair. second time i did a cadaver and it feels pretty good.

steadman-hawkins.com the BEST did tony hawk dan marino tons of big names have been patients there including myself

a friend of mine just had his 3rd acl surgery...every two years for the last 6 he's torn the same acl...he still kills it

Snowboarding is tough on the knees too. And plus you would have to learn how to do it aswell as you ski and then it uses different muscles so you'll be more vulnerable to injury the first couple years. I suggest you hit the gym and build up your leg strength, that way you won't break as easy.

my ski buddy has had numerous acl injuries and, for now, he is skiing fine. he was out 4 a very long time tho and he still rehabs his knees everyday w/ the stuff the doc tells him to do.

also, my other bud's dad's knees r real beat up from shit like that, so he skis with these braces that he found on the market. he never skis w/o em and w/ em, he skis very, very well. so my point is, rehab and look into some sort of brace, but of course, i have no personal experience so.......good luck.

so what kind of workouts can you do to help prevent acl knee injuries, just keep your legs in shape by maybe lifting weights (obvisouly w/ your leg)

I know last year i hurt my back skiing and then reinjured in during baseball, so over the summer i worked out my back with wieghts and training, etc.

my brother tore his and my friend tore it in each knee at different times. They both said that they wouldnt wish tearing an ACL on their worst enemy.

my roommate and i say that too. weve both torn ours. mine twice. his once. its a horrible thing to go through.
