religion is shit

well that is my oppnion and also the oppnion of the righter of this article, it is really good, i suggest you read it:

As a bit of a prelude, this was originally written as a letter to my sister (which is why it might seem like I'm talking to someone specifically at times). She's a bit of a fanatical Christian and was trying to convert me for some time and kept pressing me to tell her my views on religion, which I so graciously did. Needless to say she left me alone after this. It's long but I think you'll like it. Enjoy!

I really don't know how to explain how I came to my opinions without coming off as an arrogant, pretentious jerk. That's not my intention, but I could, quite honestly, sum up my entire reason for being an atheist as such: I can think for myself and use logic. To me religion and spirituality in general is an archaic creation that the human psyche refuses to let go of because we're naturally inclined to fear that which we do not know. That's all spirituality really is, a vain attempt to explain the unexplainable because the alternative frightens us. Mankind has an innate disposition to need to know things- that much is obvious over the course of our history- and when we encounter something that we not only do not know but cannot find an explanation for, we would rather create a myth to make ourselves feel better: People would rather believe and easy lie than the hard truth. Which is what it really is, the hard truth- there are just some things out there that we can't explain, but that doesn't mean we should fabricate explanations. Rather we need to come to terms with the limits of our own comprehension. All this not only shows why spirituality exists period but why it became so popular and why it remains popular even today. I supposed in the end all that really matters is if the person is happy and has direction in their life, but it also raises the question why do they need to believe in that which defies all logic simply to give them guidance? Why do they have to not only be lied to but to lie to themselves to know where they want to go in life? Why can't they reach the same result on their own? In the end it will most likely just end up misguiding them even more if only because when you try to explain the unexplainable you raise more questions than when you started, which just leaves you more confused and lost. I guess that's religion's role, to gloss over these discrepancies and tell you not to question them, thus nullifying any questions that could possibly be asked.

Which brings me to the other part of my view, religion (which is very different from mere spirituality- keep that in mind). In my opinion organized religion is the single worst creation of mankind. No human invention has killed as many people and left even more mindless drones who can't think for themselves. I do not think it is a coincidence that no major religion is younger than 1,500 years (that being Islam, which started in the mid-500's), because human advancement has come so far that we no longer need some ancient book or council of elders to tell us how we should live our lives- we can make those decisions for ourselves. The Bible wasn't written by 'God', it was written by a committee of men starting over 2,000 years ago and has since been altered, translated, added to, and subtracted from more times than anyone, much less the Church itself, would like to believe. The Torah and the Koran are the same way. All 3 are sets of morals and principles written so long ago you can't even fully comprehend the real length of time. The only morals that still apply today should be a given anyway, and if you honestly need to be told them then you have some serious issues. Organized religion IS a cult- they tell you THEY are right and everyone else is WRONG. They tell you how to live your life- they insult the free will they claim God gave you by taking it away. They brainwash their participants, they invoke loyalty to the point of intense violence, they would rather have those that disagree dead than alive to question them, and they deny you your very right to think for yourself. Which goes on to raise another good point- why do you worship a god so arrogant and conceded that he REQUIRES you to worship him, so much so that if you refuse to you are sent to Hell? But I digress- all in all I see organized religion as the largest proprietor of revoking people's freedom to think and do what they want. I predict that my only regret in my life will be that I won't live long enough to see the downfall of Christianity, which saddens me because it shows that people would rather be told what to think instead of thinking for themselves.

Which is really what life is about, doing what YOU want to do, not what you're TOLD to do. You waste your whole life in a vain struggle to gain acceptance to an afterlife you're not even sure exists. While you toil away I'm enjoying my life. Quite honestly my life is GREAT- I can't think of a single day I've been depressed. Of course I don't attribute that directly to my atheism, but I reached it along the same path. We were brought up in a household where we were encouraged to form our own ideas, which is good because most households tell their kids not only what to believe when they're young but to not question it, either, which I cite as the main reason organized religion has persisted as long as it has, although I guess spirituality would live on. In any case, because I was left to form my own conclusions on life I've found some very important beliefs that transcend something as trivial as belief in a superior being, or lack thereof. I came to my religious views the same exact way, by contemplating life, the human condition, and how they come together. To me unquestioning faith is absolutely disgusting- I don't say that quote from Galileo ['I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.'] is my favorite for nothing. Humans are naturally curious, as I said, and to suppress that defies everything we live for (beyond the Darwinian view, of course). Spirituality and religion both work to limit this natural reaction, though in different ways. Spirituality limits it by removing from us our desire for a real explanation by providing a fake one, when we should really accept the unexplainable, or to contemplate it anyway, which could very well lead us to seemingly unrelated revelations. Organized religion requires unquestioning faith because they could quite simply not hold up to the intense scrutiny each and every human being would put it under. Organized religion is so successful in lying to its followers because it forces them to lie to themselves. Mankind should question each and every single thing we encounter because it gives us a much more complete and rounded view of them. Leonardo Da Vinci examined everything from at least 3 perspectives because it showed him much more than just one could have- it's doubtful religion even examines things from one perspective and instead just removes the inquisitiveness entirely so as to continue with the followers assuming they're right rather than looking at the situation objectively and coming to a conclusion for themselves.

That's my view on spirituality and religion. You may say I'm a cynical person but I'm really not- I just see the world for what it is and accept it rather than requiring a lie to make me feel better about myself. I feel good about myself regardless of religious belief or affiliation and I think there are FAR more important things than the nature of one's beliefs on the afterlife and how we came to be. I look at life as being my only chance to really live- I don't know how life began or what happens when we die but I've come to terms with the fact that those are things I will never know the answer to, and I'm comfortable with that. Instead I'll focus on being the best person I can be, and trying to lead a life that I deem worthy of living. So far, at least in my mind, I've passed with flying colors. I'm not saying you should believe as I do, although I honestly think the world would be a much better place if everyone did, I'm just saying that the belief system that has worked best for me is none at all. I do think I'm right, as you probably think you're right, but I really don't care if I'm wrong- it won't change how I live my life, and I'll continue making my own decisions about which paths I should and shouldn't take, and if God won't grant me passage to Heaven for that then so be it. At least I know that I have a great life and I'm enjoying myself, because I choose to think how I want to think and do what I want to do, not think how I'm told to think and do what I'm told to do. I know this isn't your vision on the subject, but I really don't care about that- you can believe anything in the world, just as long as you don't try to force me to believe the same thing.

i know you wrote that to your sister, and thats fine. your views on religion are just that, your views. Its where you make the subjest title religion is shit that gets me. you do your thing and ill do mine. Your sister is wrong to try and convert you. But in a way, you are trying to change people views by posting that. Maybe some people are scared of the unknown, so be it. other people like myself, have been through incidents, where there is no way i should be alive today, but am. i had somebody looking over me, and that somebody has a plan. whether its true or not, we dont know, and mankind will never be able to prove it. Its just faith, if it helps people through life, why is it skin off your back??

I fell relgion is shit but thats because people are forcing it on me. If someone forced somethign on you and you didn't belive it you would think its shit too. now jarossamdb7 wich religion are you attaching exactly because correct me if i am wrong but your jewish and you shoudln't be dissign christionaity when you really have no links to it (i guess i count). hucksterjibster. as a note i am a Christian. ok, according the the Bible and just Christianity in general, it is good to try to convert people. So whats wrong with him trying to convert us? There is no problem with his sharing his views, even if he is trying to turn this site into as Athiest mob (which im sure he isnt.) its a give and take man.

the second paragraph kind of makes it seem like he wrote it but if you read the first you can tell the difference between someone who can spell and someone who can't. I enjoyed the article it didnt say anything about morality or ethical behavior (although it implied it a few times) I'm still undeicded on the whole life after death/supreme being concept. I am just glad I was not forced to believe anything when I was being raised and have the ability to form my own opinion not my parents. Maybe I'll burn in hell for that eventually but at least I won't be there alone which is comforting in itself.

he said somthing like, your dumb if you need the 10 commandments totell you what is right or worng. the higher being thing is a different issue but atleast for me it is prutty easy to tell what is right or wrong. as far as morality and ethics are concerned, it amases me to this day, how people dont have any but religion is not gonna cure that. people need to come up with it on their own, mabey some sort of guidance or religion can help but so far, i dont think religion has halped alot with that

I hold a rather suprising view of religion, being that I am an Atheist:

It has been said that religion is the opiate of the masses (which is its potential--it can be very dangerous in drugging the religious into inaction), but it can also be the conscience of the masses. Take as evidence the Southern Baptists' role in the civil rights movement. Take also the fact that, though I am an atheist, my beliefs in nonviolence stem from the Mennonite religion.

All religion is not bad, in fact NO religion is entirely bad. I favor the Humanist religion (of which the writer Kurt Vonnegut is honorary chairman)--not really a religion, just people who are nice to other people WITHOUT the prize of heaven waiting at the end of the show: just being nice to people because that's what people are supposed to do.

Don't knock religion: it may have been the impetus for the bloodiest wars in history and it may encourage people to kill in the name of God, but if people just focus on the New Testament and stop thinking silly things about Jesus (namely that he was the son of God and not just a Jewish radical who was amazingly effective at communicating his message), I think we'll all be okay.

-----------------

See my website, Common Sense: www.ThoseDamnLiberals.org

I'm an atheist/moralist.

My parents were hippies. Both my grandfathers were Mennonite conscientious objectors in WWII. It's complicated.

You are not the only one who the fundementalists piss off. While reading the letter I noticed that you kert attacking 'unquestioned faith,' and I found this very intresting. Do you think that Christians accept everything tahat they are told or read right then and there? Do you think that they will just set their faith in anything that hey are told? My faith, as a Christian, is not at all unquestioned, and I think that goes for everyone over the age of ten who claims christianity. It's not just something that you say and boom youre a christian, it is a big change, and it cerianly is not undertaken without pondering ones faith.

I would also like to point out that athiesm and humaism take as much or more faith then Christianity. Darwinism, the big bang, etc., there are many theories that humanists and athiest accept on a regular basis, but they are all baised in blind faith, just like religon. You can not bash blind faith, or faith as a whole, if you believe in evolution or any unproven scientific theory for that matter. You ascribe to faith to the same extent that we do. You have faith that there is nothing else, that the physical world is all that exists, that we came from ameobas in a primordial ooze. Without faith we can not believe in anything except for what we have seen with our own eyes.

I could go into this more but I don't want to seem imposing or agressive, I just wanted to lay that out there. Also, don't get upset at your sister, she just has your best intrests at heart, but if you are uncomfortable about it then it is good that you told her.

I think that as long as someone questions things around him and doesn't blindly believe in things he is told, then that's fine. What I hate is when people are told things (doesn't nessecarilly have to be religion) and they simply accept it as true, one hsould question EVERYTHING. The greatest people in history (Socrates, Davinci etc.) were people who examined and pondered things to obtain greater understanding, we should all do the same. The road to knowledge is filled with questions.

Great thread. Weather you wrote it or not it was a convincing argument. But i also agree with hucksterjibber that if someone had faith and its not hurting you then its really none of you business.

haha you are my hero. definitely religious people get rippin pissed if you try to question their faith, even if you're on their side. and yes, i would want people to lead good lives not because they think they will be rewarded later but just because it is righteous, you know.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of

''there are many theories that humanists and athiest accept on a regular basis'' - they are just that though, theories! a theory is somthing that hasnt been prooven yet that is the whole idea. do you consider concepts as big as the ones you mentioned to me just theories? would you consider that christ being the sone of god a theory? hell, us athiests consider what we think creation was a theory, would you consider it a theory that god created man? athiests, or atleast some like me, really dont know what they beleve but to me the idea of a guy up in the sky looking down on everyone to see if they are good or not sounds prutty derastic.

i am a very religeous person, and this forum is pretty offensive, what if someone made a forum saying 'atheism is shit' and then all they did in there is bash on atheism. thats not nice. and i do know for a fact that all my religeon has done for me is always been there for me as a rock when everything else in my life was hell. it was something to hold on to and help me. i just know that i have felt feeling that nothing else has made me feel and a kind of joy from my religeon that nothing else can give me

Well you have to believe in something, how do you think we got here? Whatever that reason is it remains unproven. Say you believe the big bang created the universe, well if it created the universe what did it use for matter, because you can create matter? Was it already there, if so how did it get there? Where did humans come from, did we evolve from apes? If so where is the evidence to prove this, the missing link if you will? Faith, belief in science requires faith. There are big gaps in these theories that are accepted in secular humanist circles, and they must be filled in with faith. SO, what requires more faith, the fact that we evolved from some ooze into complex beings or that we were created.

everyone's got their own beliefs on how we got here and so yes, there's no definitive proof that any of thse theories (big bang, evolution, God,etc.) are true. so when it comes down to it, WE JUST DONT KNOW.

however, we all wonder, and if any of our theories about the origins of life are true, I find it much easier to believe in one that is based on years of scientific research than one based on a book written by a bunch of old guys 2000 years ago.

by the way, i love that quote from galileo too, if we have the power to think, why dont we?

the arguments in that letter are just as dogmatic as anything that any religion might try to push on you... and to the jackass up there who said that the only bad ones are 'mormans' (mormons) and satanic people, i say this: without mormons, there would be no napoleon dynomite. what say you to that? eh? i thought so. (not to mention that they are at the top of stats like: longest life expectancy, lowest occurences of divorce, drug dependancy, alcaholism, highest occurance of college degrees, etc etc... yeah.. its a terrible religon... idiot.)

Christainity has a wide range of devotion. There are some people in my town that can't even come outside on a friday until sundown, because of their extreme veiws of afterlife, etc. Then there are people like me. I am christian, but i hardly ever go to church, and don't devote a lot of time to it. Wether afterlife is real or not, I don't know, I would like to believe it is, and so it is a goal to work towards. I don't know, i just see it as a way to keep myself as a better person.

Joke of the Week:

This little boy and his grandfather are fishing. Granddad pulls

out a beer and the little boy says 'Grandpa, can I have one of

those?' Grandpa says 'Is your penis big enough to touch your

asshole?' to which the little boy responds 'No.' 'Then you can't

have one.' A while later, the granddad pulls out a cigar and the

boy asks, 'Can I have on of those?'

Grandpa says 'Is your penis big enough to touch your asshole?'

to which the little boy responds 'No.' 'Then you can't have

one.' Later on, Grandpa and Grandson go to the grocery store for

food and each buy a lottery ticket. Grandpa is unlucky, but the

little boy says 'I just won $50,000'

Grandpa says, 'Great, your going to split that with me, right?'

The little boy asks, 'Grandpa, is your penis long enough to

touch your asshole?' 'Yes,' Says grandpa. 'Then go fuck

yourself!'

''what if someone made a forum saying 'atheism is shit' and then all they did in there is bash on atheism. thats not nice. and i do know for a fact that all my religeon has done for me'' - that would be typical. the church bashes athism all the time!

JD, that is an opnion, and if you found someone religous enough, they would say no.

I'm not actually going to read that, no. Way too lazy right now. However, I am not religious in the least. The way I look at it though, is though I may not hold the same beliefs as other people, I do not try to win them over or put down their ideas, because I would not want them doing the same to me. The one thing about the Bible is that it is not ment to be lived by in my opinion, but to be viewed as basic lessons for people. I disagree with the die hards who feel everyone is going to hell and stuff too.

We'll have you dead pretty soon.

yeah anyone that rags on religion is just showing their own stupidity, if you dont believe in something theres no need to rag on it, just peacefully dont believe in it, ragging on it doesnt accomplish anything, ive found that most people that are anti-religion say that oh religion is for stupid and insecure people, but by saying that they just prove that they are ragging on religion to feel smart

im with bigj again. no matter what you believe, even if you claim to believe in nothing, thats what you believe in. how can you say one blind faith is better than the other? its quite hypocritical in my opinion.

I believe in G-d. I've seen plenty of unexplained weird shit and miracles to have me recover my faith towards G-d. I dont need religion structures just to have a faith. Christians made it so damned complex and hassle just to have faith and believe in miracles.
