Religion is like a penis.

If I were to preach how I don't believe in god to people most christians would get extremely upset, it's the same concept just flipped around. I don't think anyone should preach their views to anyone unless specifically asked.

if any religion anyone should convert to its Buddhism... not because of the meat and everything as I'm just suggesting people could be more compassionate... I believe everyone can take something out of every religion and use it to better their life. I wouldn't try to cram any religion down anyone's throat cause if history has taught me one thing about religion is that it starts wars. create one religion everyone believes in, abolish all wars. believe in what you want but I think personally that every religion has something you can take out of it to better your life, and if we don't want to better the lives of our selves then what are we here for. why not try something that you can be happy with and other people can be happy with themselves. I plan on paving my own road, but whilst paving my own road I have to be considerate of where others roads are heading and try to come to a mutual agreement.

how can i say this politely without saying fuck religious people...

Fuck people who are religious and feel the need to push their beliefs on other people. Loved the analogy though Mama, good find.

I agree with most of what you are saying here, but when you say what are we here for I have a different opinion than you. I don't think any of us are here for any reason other than are species is living on the earth. We are here to reproduce our species and carry on. As humans we are just more intelligent than other species. I;m not sure if that really makes sense to you. It's kind of hard for me to explain it

no, I understand what your saying.. Its pretty much the same ideology that Joe Rogan has. People are animals too. A city is no different from a bee hive. That's why there everywhere. It's just that people are smarter than bee's... It's not like there's one city and people come to it and are like WTF??

Tanks!

I don't know why these threads always turn into shitstorm. It never gets anywhere. Ever. How about ya'll stop arguing, laugh at the picture, and do something else? Woo?

Word, that's exactly what I was saying and thank you for reminded me about the Stanley Cup finals haha

Religion is one of, if not the most, polarizing topics that people discuss. Its naive to think that people on the internet won't have opinions about it that they would like to voice.

I also think its very important to have discussions on the subject of religion, given the vast influence it has all over the world. You posted a picture that instigates discussion about religion, people are going to discuss it.... and because we are on the internet, that discussion is going to turn into a shitstorm.

I really don't see how this discussion turned into a shit storm............am I missing something?

I'm glad you did. I think Hedges is one of the most important voices of the 21st century, I just wish more people were willing to listen.

well I'm of the Jedi religion. and George Lucas has been shoving that shit down societies throat since 1977. No one has complained thus far that I know of.

This guy makes a few good points, but i disagree with him when he says that we are not advancing morally... We are advancing morally. Its ridiculous to suggest we aren't. Black/minority rights, gay rights, women's rights... this is positive progression.

"Theres nothing in human history that suggests we are advancing morally."

Bullshit. Sure we aren't perfect, but we are a whole lot better than we were a few hundred years ago.

I recommend you watch this talk:

I understand that he hates on Sam Harris a bit, but i think its worth the listen.

They most certainly are. Between the ages of 4-11, I went to a Catholic school, during which time I was repeatedly force fed religion. There is no option no to listen, when you have Mass in the morning, then Religious Education, then prayers, etc; you simply have no choice.

I was forced to listen against what is now my better judgement, which is why I despise, really despise the way children are proselytized.

The moral advancement you refer to is for the most part illusional. Minority groups remain discriminated against as fervently as always, only the the discrimination is much more systemic, rendering it less overt and detectable.
Furthermore, the progress you're referring to (I believe) is progress taking place within the US, not within the world. Take for example the treatment of women, gays, etc. in places such as the middle east. It has not improved, if anything it continues to get worse. While we're in the middle east, let's look at what else is happening here that may suggest we haven't advanced morally.. Senseless and needless killing of innocent people by the US (your supposed morally reformed poster-child), more senseless killing in the Israel/Palestine conflict, more still in Egypt and Libia.. and the list continues. I haven't even made it to India, China or Africa.
Also, let us not forget the atrocities of our not so distant past. The holocaust was 65 years ago, the Khmer Rouge more recent in the late 70s and more recent still the Rwandan genocide in 94, and I'll finish with 9/11. Historically speaking these events are frighteningly recent.
Wars, genocides and fascist regimes continue to plague our world. As long as this remains the case, I see no evidence to suggest that we have advanced morally.

lol. The US is one of the last places i would point to when it comes to moral progress.

As for the middle east, you can at least point to religion as part of the reason. Religions openly promote discrimination and bigotry.

Yes, there have been, and will continue to be atrocities. However, i think there is a clear progression in our overall human consciousness... What i mean by that is that pretty much every intelligent, moral person will agree that discriminating against people because of their colour/race/gender/sexuality is wrong. This is progress. People didn't think this way in the past.

We are making moral progress, its just that the people in power are still morally bankrupt.

we havnt completely come to a halt, but religion has certainly slowed down moral advancements massively. all these rights you talk of would be a thing of the past if it werent for religion

well by your parents sending you to catholic school, they chose for religion to be forced upon you. key word chose.

Like half my school does this and at all are sporting evens and after school the same dude hands out flyers. ive told him no multiple times andhe still insists. also everyones all "yeah man, young life was so cool and fun" but ot pulls you in pulls you in, thinking itsclub or something then they pull out religous shit. dont hate, im just not into that stuff. /rant

Dear Atheists,

There is nothing worse than atheists trying to push atheism on you... They complain that Religious people try and convert them as they trash all their ideals and beliefs which they have no say in. In my books Religion is personal and for yourself and yourself only, no one can tell you what or why to believe. So atheists stop thinking you're better than anyone else for not being religious and hop off the bandwagon.

Sincerely,

Nick

hahahahahahahahahaha utah is funnyhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1yToXhFvgo&feature=related/static/images/flash_video_placeholder.png

Almost every religion boils down to the same thing when you go back to its roots, which is love. And anything short of that, on either side, is missing the point.

Mama your posts are just so thought provoking there is only one reaction you should expect out of NSG, rage.

i hope you realize thats not how any of them act towards you, at least in my experience. Thats what I was expecting when i moved out to utah and it turns out I havent had an attempted convert yet (after one year). I live in a predominantly mormon neighborhood and even had the missionaries stop by yesterday and shoot hoops with us for like an hour and they never tried to shove anything down our throats. I had a mormon roommate the entire first year and not even he tried to convert me. people overexagerate like crazy but its whatever

I heard that John McKay the Scarborough MP and previous faith minister of Canada would frequently say this exact comment.

Thank you! Such an important thing to remember. Religion doesn't have specific messages in the end... Its all saying the same things; believe in yourself and your fellow man, take control of your own future, help those that are less fortunate than yourself, forgive instead of holding a grudge... I try to do most of these things but I'm not perfect and nobody is. The people that religion really gets through to are the ones who are willing to bend the rules and shape their own opinions and interpretations of religious texts around what they consider a greater good.

EVERYBODY LOVE EVERYBODY!

Not necessarily the church though. Usually the parents, but the parents are influenced in many cases by their religion. That's one of the reasons I find religion hard to swallow. The religion that you believe in is largely determined by geography and family. So how does anyone know which one is right?
