that obviously isn't the best I could put together, just an interesting little conundrum, I apparently none of you 'believers' can give an answer to explain.

religious folk are the laziest people I know of. Rather than go out and try to prove something, or discover the meaning behind a natural occurance or anything that they can't explain, the just say 'god created it' or 'god did that to test our faith' science is only truly exlplainable thing in our universe...and science and your make-believe men in the sky can possible coexist.

I highly doubt I'd be able to convince some of the people on this site of the truth behind their religions. Some of you are so fanatically attached to your fables and myths, that ignorance beheld by them have seeped in and corrupt your entire way of thinking.

slick- do you recall my questions to you? i think i made a more than convincing case against the finality and certianty of science as a basis for answers to all questions. your reply to my questions were no better than anything you ridecule religious people for. religion requires mad study if you want to understand it. as much as any secular schoolastic subject i have undertaken... so go back to page one or two of this thread, and please indulge my questions, as you gave only the most cursory of explanations initially.

hmmmm, I think his theory is interesting in another sense. It kindof leads to a debate on infinity. If god could build a boulder big enough that he couldnt lift it. He could just use his powers to lift it. But he could make it bigger. It actually is quite a paradox.

i am a hedonist. i believe to live life to whatever give you the most pleasure. it may interfere with other people's moral codes, but in the end, if it gives you pleasure and strength to carry on, isn't it worth it? i just believe to do what you love, whatever the consequences. this may sound selfish, but if what you are doing to find happiness harms other people, and that makes you sad, then in fact, it's not the action you should be doing if it effects you negatively in the end. it wouldn't not be a positive effect to obtain pleasure. it would be a negative effect, which would inturn, not benefit you if you or give you any feeling of happiness, so it wouldn't not make sense to do. If we weren't intended to live life for the most pleasure possible, then we wouldn't get the feel of happiness, when performing things we enjoy. do what you love, that's the theory i follow.

I think that your philosophy (fireunderwater dude) is actually pretty accurate of what most people do anyway. People are out there to please themselves and usually at the expense of others, I'd say it's pretty typical of probably 90% of the population.

im agnostic... well im officially catholic, but i have no idea what i believe in. i go to church every sunday, i like hearing the gospels, but the rest of the mass for the most part is garbage around here. a lot of propaganda, which you wouldn't expect from a church. or maybe you would? i think it's all good and ok to believe in a higher power but i think that following something that other people believe in won't bring you to where you want to go. there are rarely people who listen word for word to the mass anyways, but still, everybody's beliefs are different, and when the priest keeps mumbling on about the catholic church being the light and the way, and to extend hands to our brothers and sisters, to steer away from evil (hinting at non religious people), and to wtick with only catholic church. then they pass the collection. jerks.

But my favourite of all religions, to study, must be Norse. It is so rich in story, myth and culture. The Valkeries(swedish bikini massagers, that can heal ppl) Select the greatest warriors to reach valhalla, a land where the heros battle during the day, feast and become healed at night, in preparation for Ragnarok, end of days. Thats just a simple version.

I believe that there could be something more but I dont know so how can I believe? I believe that there is possibility but no security so I just dont give a fuck. However I find it interesting to discuss. What I also think of is that religion and science ar ethe same. If religion was reality (there really was a god(christian)) then that would be the science. God would be an extra-terestrial/some unknown form of life. And angels would be a manifestation of something scientififc. It all play in together.

God isn't science, God is the greatest Scientest of all. Imagine a big fuck off circle the size of the sun. Place a little dot in the middle of it. That circle represents all the knowledge there is to know, that little dot represents how much of it we know. God knows the rest so it's just plain arrogance to try and place God in a box and think about how he exists. All we really can know about him is that he must look kinda like a man because we were created in his image and who knows what kind of dimension he lives in because everything we know has been created by men so it's not like his world is going to be the same, it's all horribly confusing and amazing stuff that we can never even try to comprehend so yeah, it's all good.

^EXACTLY i believe that god created us and as our race of humans grew, he/she began to set himself back and limit us to what could know about him, thats why it is pointless to spend time figuring everything out because maybe we arent supposed to know. Plus, we arent supposed to 'understand' everything aobut god and everything that is in the bible, we are supposed to believe and let our faith guide us. That is what makes our religion, our FAITH, not our understanding. Also, god is a superior being, so we cannot comprehend his powers, so slickjick or w.e., thats a very good point, but with good faith, it doesnt proove anything....

i think that we are just here and nobody created us. and yeah it sure sounds like a cliche but i believe in evolution its the only thing that makes sense with facts to back it up. except for the fact that where did the first atom come from and where did the thing that made the first atom come from and what made that and so on and so on and so on. if god did create the earth and the rest of the universe then what made god? and where was god when he was doing all of this? just like chillin in some dark void all alone one day and decided to acquire special powers and make the earth and the rest of the universe? its too far fetched in my opinion and religion is just one big metaphor for what we think happenned and also what we know happenned. god is just something that keeps us going, just that natural force and energy that keeps us alive and the thing that created us. us being humans, rising above all other species and conquering this planet. that is god. i doubt there is actually an embodyment of this thing we call 'god.' its all metaphors people. all an attempt to explain the history of humans for lazy people. think, dont have blind faith. and yes im being opinionated biased and sterotypical saying things like lazy and blind faith but thats just my opinion, dont cry about it.

Snostay, I can see exactly why you believe in evolution. I would too if I hadn't lived my life the way I have and seen the things i've seen. Evolution, in a broad picture, does make sense, it makes almost perfect sense. I disagree with you that there are any facts to back it up, I think there aren't but that's okay. It seems almost ideal that a species would better adapt itself to it's environments and surroundings. On the other hand, it's just too extraordinary to be possible, and like you said earlier, where did that first molecule come from and how did nothingness suddenly explode into somethingness, it's just too mindbogglng and I personally think that we, as humans, just aren't meant to know.

The other side: I can also see exactly why you choose not to accept God and creation. If you didn't believe then yeah, it's pretty far fetched and out of it to think that some supreme being created us and our planet, and where did he come from? how did he do it? how could he have done it? there's so many questions and no answers, again, we just aren't meant to know the answers. I guess God has all the answers and if we had them all then we'd be Gods too wouldn't we and I don't think he wants that.

paul, evolution does not have facts to back it up, yes the scientific community backs it in general, but they tailor the evidence to fit their theory and it is ever changing according to every new scientific finding that comes out. scientific creationism has not changed at all and has yet to be disproven in any respect. however i realize why you dont want to put blind faith in creationism, and i hate to say it, but you and countless others are putting blind faith in evolution instead. none have been proven, none have been disproven, but both theories require gigantic leaps of faith. i just would rather out my faith in god, than in a little swirling dot of everything that came from nothing and made everything.

phattim you've made some good arguments through and through, but that last one i disagree with. ok as much as i believe in the bible and stuff, it's not all meant to be taken literally. the flood gates in teh sky..oh yeah they're real (that's sarcasm). the parables aren't meant to be taken literally either...go ahead and built a house on sand, let me know how it turns out. teh parables, yes they are used to compare our lives from how they are to how they should be, but it's more or less our faith lives. take the man who built his house on rocks and the man who built his house on sand. the man who built his house on rocks had strong faith and a good solid foundation. the man who built his house on sand had little faith adn wasnt very firm in his beliefs. i dunno..maybe i misunderstood something, but i defiietely do not think the bible was to be taken literally.

wow good thread.

many of you seem think that god created the universe like molding each planet and plant and person like play-dough. what if god just made the framework? what if god simply outlined the laws of physics and supplied a jolt of energy to start it all and kicked back and watched?

I very much doubt that god is humanlike. just because humans can reason and we know of no other creatures that can is no grounds to assume god is human. god, if there is a god, is probably an intangeable force.

evolution has been proven in a way. The concept that living things adapt to their environments and changes within them has been proven long ago. During the industrial revolution in England there was a major increase in factories which in turn created a major increase in air polution. Massive amounts of soot were spouted into the air and coated the barks of many many trees giving them a dark black appearence. A certain species of moth(cant quite remember) had markings designed to blend in with the natural color of trees in the area. When the trees became black then them moths were visible by birds and the population declined rapidly. However, a mutation in the moths genes caused some of them to have totally black wings and bodies that blended better with the coal coated tree bark and more of these moths survived and within a matter of a few years the black moth outnumbered the regular moths. When we became more educated and the factories became cleaner burning the soot was washed away. This caused the remainder of the regular moths to start to prevail again over the black moths and soon the regular moths outnumbered the black moths again just like in the beginning. This is evolution, survival of those who are best adapted to the environment they live in. Evolution is NOT adapting to your environment, but already being adapted by having an edge over your competetors, by having the edge you are more likely to survive and pass on the genes that gave you the edge and more and more generations will have the abilities to survive in the environments in which they live thus increasing the number of those with the edge and decreasing those without it. eventually the strain of a species without the attribute will become extinct and the new species will prevail and it is an ongoing cycle that will never stop until all life is extiniguished. Hope i shed some light on the subject guys.

actually i think it is our own decision. you cant say the bible IS MEANT or ISNT MEANT but you can say I THINK IT IS MEANT because not everyone interprets and thinks everytyhing the same way.

And snowstay, you're talking about adaption, it's very very different to evolution so no, evolution has no support what-so-ever. Well actually it does, but it's been proven incorrect.

its not adaptation, adaptation would be if the regular moths turned into the black moths. thats not how it happenned. Black moths were born from the regular moths because of gene mutations. gene mutations is what evolution is. when a mutation in a gene produces favorable results for the animal and survives better off then the norm of that species thats evolution, thats what happend with the moths. adaptation is like saying girrafes couldnt reach the high branches so they grew longer necks. No somewhere along the line a girrafe was born with a larger neck and was able to reach higher more abundent food sources, now im not sure if the girrafe thing is true its just an example. so....

adaptation=change of an already living creature to its environment to better suite its needs.

evolution=favorable gene mutations that are passed on,. in short, survival of the fittest.
