put in your windows disk in boot off the disk and you can format it like that just pick a format and dont pick the one that says (quick)

just put in ur windows xp disc and restart the computer, then the rest is pretty easy until u get to the disc partitions part just delete the biggest one usually pretty close to the size of ur hard drive, there mite be another one of like 200mb for drivers and crap, yea so delet that and then it will ask u to make a new one then do that and ur rollin, just gotta click next a few times. dont call dell they will screw u up, just pm me if u have ny questions

you dont have to reformat. keeping your computer running as good as the day you got it is as easy as

1 Having an antivirus- AVG is one of the bests and they have a free unlimited version at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 its a full working antivirus just check for updates daily or put the autoupdate on

2 having anti ad/spy ware - if your using anything other than spybot search and destroy uninstall it and get this. check your computer weekly and make sure that you use the imunize feature

3 keep your hard drive organized- hard drives write on the disk in differnt spread out locations run disk defragmenter once a month minimum to get all your files back in a nice neat organized area so that your needle head doesnt have to skip back and fourth to find data.

follow these 3 steps and your computer will run as fast as the day you bought it. no matter how much stuff you loaded it down with

^ yea but reformatting gets rid of all the congested and hidden and stupid little files that u dont delete and cant be moved by defraging, you should do it every year if not sooner

you dont need to do all that. once you uninstall something. if it leaves some stuff over you just delete it manually.

as for files that cant be moved on defragment there are non. if you have more than 256 mb of ram you can disable your page file (the part of windows that runs on your hard drive) by disabling this windows will load entirely on ram and when you defrgment you will not get any non-movable files.

what ever, thats your opinion, but i always like a fresh start when i restart my computer

reformating also fixes many un fixable problems

There is some good general maitenance info here, another thing is to have a few shortcuts and icons as possible on your main screen. Further, make sure any unnecessary programs aren't starting up on computer startup.

it has to do with the way the computer has to establish the connection to the executable. Basically, by having a shortcut you are, esentially, partially starting applications. As opposed to accessing them via the start menu which is like exporing and clicking directly on the executable (it is completely unused/inactive until clicked). Its more for startup performance than overall performance.
