Reddit Atheists

I was wondering if I'm the only one that just gets annoyed with the whole /atheist circle jerk fest that goes on 24/7 365 on Reddit. I'm wondering what the appeal of being a complete asshole to anybody that has faith in a religion that you don't support is. This isn't me trying to start a shitstorm, I'm just curious if anybody has any opinions on this. Like does everybody that isn't a hardcore asshole just ignore their posts, and that's why there's no opposition? I'm not saying all atheists are assholes either, anytime shit starts it's usually an aggressive theist vs an aggressive atheist, so don't call me a dick.

Only those with the most extreme views on the subject feel the need to waist their time arguing the subject. The sensible people, those in the middle, know it's a pointless argument as it's an argument of FAITH.

religion is fucking dumb.

arguing with a religious person is fucking dumb as well, because they're so fucking dumb they can't understand a logical argument.

haha I can 100% guarentee you that in every single measure of intelligence I am more intelligent than you; and I am religious

1. Make a fucking Reddit account

2. Unsubscribe to the atheism subreddit with one click

3. ????

4. Profit

i've been a member since 2005. you've been a member for a year? my post/year ratio is way below yours.

Yes actually. I am a very tolerant person and open minded. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Not everyone in R/atheism is a prick but a lot of them seem to think they are the smartest fucking people in the world and talk as if people who are religious are stupid. It really does piss me off..honestly reddit pisses me off anymore... OO LOOK AT MY FUCKING CAT D'AWWW.

and this is very true, you might as well just not talk about the shit because people are so set on their beliefs its like talking to a wall on either side of the argument.

Both sides of the religion debate end up being circle jerks because there's no way to prove your beliefs, as much as some from each side will try. I just respect both sides and keep my mouth shut.

As an atheist, I dislike some atheists for believing the "right" thing for the wrong reasons.

"Internet atheists" are ignorant morons. There are smart atheists, but they're not here.

Years ago atheism was a scholarly pursuit that existed solely in universities, but after constant losses in the political arena atheists felt the need to popularize their movement among youths. Unfortunately they did not take the care to maintain their own high standards of knowledge, intellect and reason among their followers, and what resulted was a flock of sheep, parroting the simplest of atheist philosophy without coming anywhere near deserving the accolades they heap upon each other.

By claiming superior rationality atheists have lost the need to reason. By claiming superior intellect atheists have lost the need to learn. By claiming superior morality atheists have lost the need to be decent.

why not believe in harry potter? you can't disprove that either. not to mention wizards are way cooler than jesus

“To argue with a person who has renounced the use of reason is like administering medicine to the dead.” -Thomas Paine

I'm an atheist and I think it's kinda weird that like 80% of the stuff people do on /r atheism is to make fun of other religions. I mean, it's pretty fun, but you get tired of it, since you already know religion is bullshit... You don't have to go around and make fun of it all the time.

Also, if you don't want to see it, why the fuck are you subscribed? I'm just wondering...

Well, I don't care enough to make an account. I go once every couple of days to get a laugh, but yeah the going around and just being a complete dick to theists seems so useless. It really just makes them look worse. And as an atheist, would you ever post an asshole comment on one of those 'jesus loves you' or whatever posts on facebook? I didn't think so. It takes a certain type of rod up the ass to cause such aggression.

i think its actually beyond human perception to be either totally athiest or totally devoted to one religion. It is impossible for us to know what happens after we die so we should all just be thankful and treat eachother well...jahfeel?

There are a handful of subreddits that you have to unsub from. r/atheism, r/politics, r/TIL...

However, I have accrued a lot of negative karma on my troll account from the generous people at r/atheism.

well first you might wanna check you definition of ignorant. second, your a fucking idiot. i honestly feel like grabbing your head and hitting it.

pretty sure it's not just reddit, if you bring up religion or anything that goes against the mainstream youth beliefs then you get shit on hard on this site, just saying...

Had to stop reading there. Please post in coherent sentences and us atheists might consider you as educated and worthy of response more often.

Exactly. That's why i am agnostic atheist. I don't believe in a higher power, but since it is the existence of a god or afterlife or any of that stuff is unknowable, i am also agnostic. I guess it's possible that there is a higher power, but I won't know until I'm dead. I don't have any problem with people believing in a higher power, but its fucking annoying when people don't even consider the possibilities and act like they know exactly what will happen once they are dead. Atheists and theists alike.

Basically, gnosticism is for assholes.

I have more respect for an agnostic Christian than I do a gnostic atheist.

I'd like to throw in my 2 cents.

I am an Atheist. I am not a member of Reddit, but frequent the website quite often, and am familiar with r/atheism. Everyone is born an atheist. Religion is taught. In the past, anyone who questioned the church was prosecuted, exiled, etc. The non-believers of that time could either speak up or be punished. As times advanced, scientific discoveries and a few brave people that developed arguments against belief in gods, allowed people to challenge religion (with evidence in some cases) and say, for example, "Maybe the earth isn't 6000 years old". This age of questioning led to many of religion's truths being, well, not true. And so with our huge leap in technology and open questioning, people can finally admit publicly they are non-believers with out fear of backlash. Religion has about a 1,950 years of absolute authority over people with basically no major challenge. Just now, non-believers are challenging those teaching and can make their voices heard without fear of backlash.

I do not care what other people believe in, unless:

it effects what is taught in public schools (creationism)

limits peoples' rights (gay marriage, abortion, etc.)

influences scientific progress (stem cells, climate change, etc.)

Since religion influence all of these areas, there will always be a challenge to them. The goal of the challenge being that sound, scientific evidence, or even just common sense and logic is used to make important decisions; not the teachings of a 2000 year old book written by many different men, edited many different times, to fit the ideals of some men.

So while I agree that many of the arguments in r/atheism are in bad taste, this is where many of them are coming from (my opinion). And as people said before, if you don't like it, then don't enter. I don't spend my time on r/christianity or another christian website.

Also, I would like to add, that in many of the comments, there are atheists who are absolutely disgusted with the way r/atheism is handled. So don't judge all atheists by what you see in Reddit just as I don't stereotype all religious people based on the Westboro Baptist Church.

Hope this helps answer your question.
