Recording video using webcam on laptop

so theres 6 year olds out there that can figure this out on youtbe, but by no means does that mean i know how to do it. im going away and am gonna record a little blurb for my girlfriend to be able to watch each day to make up for us not being able to skype. can anyone lead me in the direction as to how i do this?

shouldn't there be some webcam software on your laptop that allows you to hit record and makes a video file?
