Recommend me a fisheye

So I think I'm about to jump on the bandwagon, so I'm in the market for a solid fisheye.

Currently I'm considering The rokinon 8mm and the Sigma 10mm, the problem is the sigma is expensive as balls. So if anyone wants to chime in, I'd be stoked!

If it helps, this would be for a canon T2i and specifically for video.

Thanks!

11mm...8mm pretty damn similiar. the only other fisheye i've heard good reviews about is the rokinon. I'm always surprised when people need something wider than the tokina

I mean, the angle of view @11 with the tokina is SO FUCKING WIDE the 8mm fish might have a few more degrees of view but thats about it. But, like you said, fisheyes are about the distortion.

Since you probably can afford something better then the rokinon 8mm, I'd say sigma 10, tokina 10-17 or nikon 10.5 (you can adapter with g adapters to adjust aperture, pretty sure) the nikon 10.5 fish is regarded as the best fish for crop sensor cameras.

ive had very good experiences with using my friends rokinon 8mm. as you have a tokina i feel like the 8mm would compliment your shots well

People always give me shit on this topic but so many videos rock a fisheye look and sometimes i actually like it (like in the capita movie or any windells/high cascade edit)

pretty sure it's the only fish on the market that can get wider than 15 on FF without vig. It's supposed to be amazingly sharp too

pretty much all fisheyes will max out at 180 degrees at around 16mm, depending on ff or cropped. if you're on a nikon system, get the 10.5, canon, 15mm ef. i have used the rokinon 8mm and its a piece of shit compared to the nikon/canon fishes... ive used a lot of fisheyes for photography and i keep a high standard when it comes to glass. don't settle for less... honestly, i bought a 10.5 for 580 3 years ago and sold it a few months ago for 550... might as well get the best

15mm isn't going to look anything like the 10.5 on a crop though, you can barely see distortion on the 15mm with a crop camera

I have the rokinon. It's really fun. IQ is really inconsistent though, so Is the infinity marker. You may need to test it a re-mark it (that's what I had to do).

Also it's complete shit st 3.5, like, it legit looks like someone smeared Vaseline all over the front element.

All in all, I think it's good value considering the price of other fisheyes, and just how plain fun it is to shoot with. If I end up filming (or skiing at all for that matter) this season, I'm only bringing my 50 and the fish

Hey you might want too check out skateperception.com they have loads of info on fisheyes there and have a dslr section on it. It's a great website for skate cinematography so I'd give it a look if I were you.

Oh I wasn't telling him to buy off SP I was just telling him that they have a lot of info on fisheyes there as opposed to NS

The Rokinon (= Samyang) 8.5mm is "good enough" for video and/or use in bright light. It is soft wide open, and therefore terrible if you want to shoot photos in available light.

If you are shooting in the snow, you will stop down your lens anyway, so the Samyang is absolutely fine. Its build quality is also second to none.

To get an excellent (= sharp and bright) fish eye I consider two options:

  • Nikon 10.5mm f/2.8
  • Pick up a cheap micro four thirds body and get the Samyang 7.5mm f/3.5 Fisheye (MFT)
Both options should run you the same combined total price (MFT bodies can be found for around $300-350). For some reason the MFT version of the Samyang is tack sharp even wide open. In my experience it is nearly as good as the Nikon. It is orders of magnitudes better than the Canon or Nikon version.

Anyway for me part of the fun of a fish eye is taking photos at parties... and for that nothing beats the tack sharp f/2.8 of the Nikon.
